I think I found this the least helpful of the APJ's. "Compromising convictions is a sin?" What marriage doesn't have some amount of convictions which need to be compromised in order to live together. Not only do two people rarely agree on everything, but even if they do at the beginning of the marriage, they certainly do not remain the same over time. This is a recipe for causing divorce.

How about the relationship and not yet married? How can i handle this? Im a complementarian and we broke up because of this doctrine. If we’re gonna get back together how can we handle this? Or should we continue our parting of ways?

Continue parting, marrying someone with such a huge difference in belief regarding your roles is inadvisable

Until the so called gospel coalition there were never terms like egalatarian and complimentarian. Why do these people have to label people.

Bc this is how sin is so prevalent in at home and church in 21 century! This directly goes against God's Word!

I wonder what Piper would have said to me that time I dated a Catholic? Didn't last long and the more I found out about Catholicism after the more glad I was that it didn't go anywhere.

This sounds close to my own marriage except it started out with years of resistance of Sunday mornings and going to church. . My husband doesn't believe even small children should be forced to go to church. My sin was the confusion it made me feel with two loud voices heard within the house on God's day, His morning, and I more often than not went ahead by myself without the children rather than sin anymore by fighting it. Thank you Dr Piper.

I can't see any Christian woman bristling to this kind of loving humble leadership..... most egalitarian women are afraid bc of their past.

@@Fearlessly91 that’s good, but the problem becomes competing with men, females are naturally more passive and non confrontational and emotionally, stop trying to be like men

Often such a marriage discounts your Christ walk

Sexism discounts your walk with God. Treating women like they are inherently less capable of leadership and making good decisions than you are discounts your walk with God.

The egalitarian is going against the word of God and therefore sinning..... whether it is the man or the woman, they are to repent of being against God's will for marriage.

I dont think its a salvation issue though. Also the hisband cant (or more importantly shouldn't) force his will on his wife. Its his job to love his wife, its his wife's to obey their husband. The husband shouldn't stop loving his wife just because his wife isn't holding up her end.

well there are egalitarian marriages that work quiet well. It just not for everyone. Simple put the men decides the roles are and what kind of wife he wants.

@@spark300c yes but he shouldn't try and change his wife, they should both be on the same page before marriage, he cant have his cake and eat it too.

I’ve been digging about this and I don’t think the hierarchy is biblical. Head means source. It’s supposed to be mutual submission. I think that complimentarianism is pride tbh on the man’s end

@vd7313 Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah. If it's egalitarian then yes it's the woman's fault but it's not it's Adam's fault for not leading and Abraham's fault for having Sarah lead him.
