I feel so sorry for your brother. That is such a miserable injury and then having to have surgery too. I hate that for him. Thank you for showing your hearing aids. I would not have noticed at all and it’s just so important to be able to hear what’s going on around us because you’re going to miss so much in life if you can’t hear it. I love this so much and I hope you have a wonderful upcoming week.

Hi Tammy, I am succeeding at sourdough baking for the first time. I watched numerous tutorials on sourdough starter and the recurring theme that helped me was to continue feeding and discarding until the starter is active. If you continue (and don’t give up) it will work. I did just that and after 12 days my starter baked into a perfect loaf. You will go through a period between days 4-7 in which the starter appears to have failed. Keep going! Use spring water.

Sorry about your brother…hope he heals fast. And you look fabulous as usual. That blue looks so good on you Tammy! My sour dough recipe is a 2 day process but very easy. My starter recipe is: mix package dry yeast with 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Mix in 2 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp warm water, 2 1/2 tbsp all purpose flour. Combine the mixtures let stand in a glass jar covered with cloth for 5 days. After 5 days put in refrigerator for 3-5 days uncovered. Now it’s ready to make bread but ‘feed’ it first with 3 tbsp instant potatoes flakes, 3/4 cup sugar and 1 cup warm water. Stir well and let sit on counter all day then in the evening mix up ur bread recipe and leave overnight. In the morning punch down and divide into 3-4 loafed depending on the size u want . Kneed a little and place in oiled loaf pans. Let rise all day. Then in the evening bake at 350 for 30-40 min. My recipe: 6 cups bread flour 1/2 cup or less of sugar 1 tbsp salt 1 cup starter and 1 1/2 cups warm water 1/2 cup oil. You can substitute the flour with whole wheat: 4 cups bread flour and 2 cups whole wheat flour. I sometimes make cinnamon rolls. Hope this helps. 🥰🥰🥰

Just an idea about the dryness you are experiencing. It’s your water . Try a fluoride and chlorine filter in your shower . They are pretty reasonable . It’s a new shower head that you attach . It’ll make your skin and hair feel totally different, soft and full of moisture. You can buy them any where. Amazon carries them or a hardware , plumbing store.

I was given starter for sourdough years ago from my ex-husbands grandmother, I only had to feed it and it was very good. I have never made it myself, there is a youtube channel, Whipperwill Holler, this lady is an out of this world cook, she gives directions in one of her videos on making starter, her name is Laurie Brown, you might want to take a look at that. Wishing you luck! Love your hair!

So much I could say about a sourdough starter. I too had exhausting days (weeks) getting my started active. Don’t give up. It took mine at least three weeks or more. I did add a little rye flour on a feeding. Also, I made sure I measured in grams. I had to learn that I had to use more flour than water. I’m sure you have read all of these ideas. Best of luck. I do enjoy following The Southern Sourdough Bread Co.

You look beautiful in this video. Tell your brother I had 4 spinal/neck surgeries. 3 on my neck, and then 8 months later had my lower back done. I had my surgeries done by the top Neurosurgeon in Tampa General Hospital. He saved my life. I had it done when I was 51, and now I am 59. I can't do what I use to do but I am in the amount of pain I was in. I was extremely athletic and now I have to do things differently, but your brother will adjust. I wish him a speedy recovery. I live in a 55 and over community and there is a woman here that makes Sour Dough bread, and she sells it to the residents. I will do my beast to ask her what tips and tricks she uses. She sells out very quickly because it is soooooo good!

I love making sourdough and never had luck making my starter from scratch. I was given a starter and also went to a local bakery that specializes is sourdough and they gift starters and I took it from there. It takes a bit of time to get going and I have had many failures! Now I have a jar of discard that I keep in the fridge to use for pancakes and other stuff. It does not take a lot starter to make a loaf so if you keep feeding your starter regularly (keeping it in the fridge) you will have lots of discard and enough to make regular loafs.

Hi Tammy. Love that you want to make your own starter, as do I. Shoulder surgery in March has me not able to begin the process yet but here are a few tips that I’ve learnt so far: The lid needs to be loose for air circulation. Use un-bleached flour, rye flour will help your starter get going better at first once it raises regularly you can use the flour you want to make your bread with, both will work it just takes more days when not starting with the rye. Room temperature tap water that has been left in an open container (jug) on the counter for 48 hours is fine to use in your starter. The first few times your starter gets bubbly but has a bad smell is part of the process but it is Not Useable yet, just keep going til the smell changes. You got this Tammy! I look forward to seeing your journey with Sourdough ❤

Mary's Nest on KZbin has excellent and very thorough instructions on sourdough. I do have the book you ordered and it is excellent, but I also appreciate visual and audio learning tools. One tip I found through Mary's Nest is to use organic rye flour to begin your starter. I also use a water filter that removes chlorine, as chlorine is a yeast killer and I learned not all bottled water is chlorine free. I've also bought starter from King Arthur Flour and that has proven to be an excellent way to begin sourdough. And when I pick it back up again I will go that route.

Hi Tammy! I just started my sourdough bread journey. When you make your starter start with 50 grams of bread flour, the King Arthur bread flour is great plus any bread flour or AP flour has to be UNBLEACHED or it won't work. I buy the gallon size spring water from store. Mix your water and flour really well and scrap the sides down of your jar. Cover your jar loosely with a lid (I love the Weck jars for this, I just set the glass top on without the rubber gasket). It has to fit loosely tho because your mixture is going to need the bacteria from the air. Next day, add 50 more grams of starter and 50 water, mix well and cover till the next day. Don't discard until your jar is at least half full and when it it, discard by half, do your 50/50 and set back on the counter. Mine took about a week or so. Scraping the sides of your jar really well will let you know if your starter peeked at night while you were sleeping. On day you will look over and you will be amazed! Just keep at it! There is a group on FB called Sugar's Sourdough Besties. They are a super great group of women that can answer any question you have! Good luck!!

Making sourdough is a journey, day 1, 50 grams four, 50 grams of water...cover with cheesecloth put in a warm place and let it sit for 12 hours. Feed your starter again after 12 hours, 50 grams flour, 50 grams of water. Day 2, discard 1/2 of starter and feed again, 50 grams of flour and 50 grams of water. Repeat this process for 1 week. You should see some bubbling by then. I started grinding my own flour and using freshly ground flour made my starter very very strong. If using bread flour is not working at first, use rye flour until the starter takes off then you can switch back to the bread flour. Keeping it fed is the most important part. Make sure you are discarding half before feeding. I put mine on top of my fridge after each feeding, it is really warm up there. Hope this helps.

Try 1 cup of regular flour...1 cup of water...but when adding the water do it a little at a time so it a little like pancake batter..not to thick but you don't want it runny...I started making sourdough last year and was obsessed...I had starters all over the kitchen...my husband said one day when I get up it's going to look like the blob in here.😂I keep a big jar of it in the fridge..you can tell if it takes when you drop a spoonful of water in a cup and it floats..I had a time of it taking but I think you just have to get the right consistency..when it started to bubble you think someone just gave me a million dollars. 😂hope this helps.. oh another thing you can use is organic rye flour added to the reg flour not much this gives it a boost..but just try the regular flour and water and see what happens..each day take out a half cup of the starter ...put back half cup of flour and half cup of water in about five days you should see bubbles.

I Tammy Debby here from Wisconsin. You're looking great as normal. I'm going to be 65 this July and have 25 pounds to lose. I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. Back in 2020 I started making my own sourdough bread. Make your own started can take some time. I used up a whole 10 pound bag of flour before my starter was strong enough to bake bread. It has nothing to do with how good of a cook or baker you are. It's more like a science project. 😃Your glass jars are perfect, use a wooden spoon and don't excpect it to bubble up for a week or more. It really depends on how much yeast it can pull from your house. I started with half a cup flour to half a cup room temperature water. Everyday keep stiring it a little and cover it with a cheese cloth then set it aside. You will start to see a bubble or two. That moring that you do, dump half out and stir in 50% of water and flour again use cheese cloth on top so air and yeast can get in the jar. Please use only regular non bleached organic white flour no bread flour. Some like to start with rye flour as it likes yeast more but I didn't. It's took at least 2 months before my starter had a rich sweet sour smell. It's been 4 years now and it's going strong. I've dried it and shipped to family and friends across the country. You will love it!

My husband just got the same ones. He paid $1500 at Costco. He had a pair before, just needed a new set. John buzzes his hair and the little bit of fuzz that’s left on top matches the grey backs. They look just like yours. I agree. It’s so much better when you can hear. Now my ex-husband (Johns my 2nd time around and for the better lol), had a hearing loss for years. We would fight all the time. He was so vain & refused to get them. Just read lips. He was an IBM controller. I could never understand how he could be all dapper suited up, and not be able to hear. The man was stubborn as a mule along with other things. The reason I got rid of him. He recently had cochlear implants done. I remain on fair terms with him. I get tons now how great his hearing is these days. Yours look great on you with your beautiful hair. Love sour dough bread. It’s my issue too. I eat it. I prefer to make my banana blueberry bread. They I have a slice in small doses.

So glad that the hearing aids are helping-I’ve seen them at Costco-my hubs has the cheapies from Amazon because he takes them out when he’s talking on his phone and then “misplaces” them, but I assume theses are WAY more comfortable…even with a phone up to your ear? Hi Tammy, The El Paso PT channel recommended a very lightweight easy for anyone to use ab trainer to those with back issues. Though your family member may be out of commission for now, the abdominal muscles are crucial for back movement. The CAP barbell ab trainer weighs less than a pound. You can roll yourself up on it and it helps tighten your ab muscles. It’s on Amazon very inexpensive. It did help me. (I’m not a medical practitioner.) Pilates teaches also to raise just the legs straight out and straight up and then down. I wish your family well.

Sourdough starter harvests yeast from the air surrounding it. If your house has been closed up and you are very clean, there may not be enough yeast to get your starter going and fermenting. The fermentation process takes a week during which you feed it with more flour every day. Bubbles should form to show you are making progress. After a week, your starter will be ready to use. But you will have to feed it again to bring the ferment back up. Hope these comments help.

So thrilled to see your long hair. I cut mine recently to about shoulder length. I just got so hot in the summer here in TX and I love to be outside gardening. Even wearing it up, my head was always a sweaty mess. But I'll grow it out again because it's not my comfort zone either. Sending prayers for your dear brother. I taught myself to make sourdough and it is wonderful! My husband still thinks I should just not go to all that trouble buy it at Whole Foods -- theirs doesn't have all the junk in it -- totally organic -- at least the one he likes to buy. But I love baking too and that's about the only item I really need to bake any more too except cookies and other goodies for our 17 grandchildren. So I have never had issues making starter. So many great videos on it here on YT. But if you still can't get your starter going, are you putting the lid on too tight? Maybe use a coffee filter over the jar secured with a rubber band so the yeast in the air can get into the flour and water. Are you using chlorine free water? I get a really good starter using my home ground rye flour. But plain non-bromated flour and chlorine free water should work just fine. I use at least 40 grams of each. . And if your place is colder in NY, yes, keep in aa warmer spot. It should take at least a week oro two to get a good starter going. Don't give up. Keep trying! You will succeed. It is so worth it. I have a few photos of some of mine on Instagram @chanteusev. My hubby has those hearing aids too and it was helped with our relationship or him asking me constantly what I said. LOL! You do you, precious Tammy! That's what we love about you! XO. Victoria in Texas

My dad had hearing loss for years and he was always cranky… Because he felt left out of conversations or misunderstood people. My mom and I kept trying to get him to a specialist but he would not go. One day he decided to go and he was so much, more fun to be around and then he was telling everybody that everybody needed hearing aids! Lol… My mom didn’t have hearing aids, but when my dad passed and he had just recently purchased new hearing aids, my mom saw the specialist and had them fitted for her.same thing… She didn’t realize how much she was missing until she started using the hearing aids❤️

It took me 14 days of daily feeding before my starter was strong enough to bake with, don’t give up! In my 70 degree home, my mature starter will rise in 8 hours and then fall back down. It doesn’t stay double forever, it’s actually a fairly short window. I cannot wait to see what you create once your starter is ready to rock and roll!

Patience on the sourdough Tammy that is the key it takes up to a couple of weeks to get this to work. You have to feed it every 24 hours. Everyday try taking 25 grams of your starter mixing in 100 G of water and 100 G of flour Stir It Up cover it but do not seal the jar tight it has to get air do that every single day after your first starter is mixed and left set for 24 hours. You will just continue that forever or once it is an established starter you can feed it and put it in the fridge and do this same feeding process but only once per week.

Sourdough, I’ve been making it for years and years, given classes etc., definitely getting your starter started is the hardest part. Sometimes you can get starter from a local bakery to skip this step…. But if you want to do it yourself these are the steps. 1. Use AP Unbleached flour for your starter , use the bread flour to bake. 2. Bottled water is great 3. Glass jar is great 4. Day 1, 30g water, 30g AP flour, mix in jar, set out on counter 5. Day 2, discard half your starter and add 30g water, 30g AP flour 6. Day 3, discard 3/4 of the starter, and add 30g water, 30g AP flour 7. Day 4, you should be getting some bubbles by now, but persevere and repeat the discard, 30/30 a few more days, and at day 6 or 7 you will have a strong starter to use. 8. Once you get going, you can maintain your starter without feeding it every day. DM me if you want to chat about it or have any classes.

Sourdough-the best advice i took about learning to make my own soughdough, including the starter from scratch, is pick 1 influencer, method to follow and stick with that. On Instagram, the food nanny peaked my interest, but Ashley rose reeves got me to do it. My starter was active and bubbly by day 3, but wasnt doing anything by day 5. After a little research, I started using wheat flour to feed and it took off again. I was able to make a beautiful loaf on day 9 or 10. It passed the float test. When make your starter your have to discard approximately half, then feed with equal amounts of flour(unbleached)and filtered water. Stir really well. It should be a little on the thick side. Its ok to add a little more flour to thicken it up. Cover loosely. I just put the jar lid on, but not the ring. It worked 🙂

Amish sourdough starter recipe with yeast Day 1: 1 packet active dry yeast (0.25 ounce or 6 grams) 1/4 cup warm water (110°F or 45°C) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1 cup milk Instructions: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let it stand for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy. In a 2-quart glass, plastic, or ceramic container, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly with a whisk or fork. Slowly stir in the dissolved yeast mixture and 1 cup milk. Cover the container loosely and let it stand at room temperature until it becomes bubbly. This is Day 1 of the 10-day cycle. Days 2-6: Stir the starter daily, scraping down the sides of the container. Continue to feed the starter 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk every day. Day 7: Stir the starter well and discard or bake with 1 cup of the starter. Feed the remaining starter 1 cup flour and 1 cup water. Stir well and let it sit on the counter overnight. Days 8-10: Stir and place the starter in the refrigerator. You don’t need to stir it daily, but it’s recommended. Repeat the feeding process every week, allowing the starter to come to room temperature before feeding and removing 1 cup to bake with. Tips: Use a warm environment for the starter, around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C). Keep the starter away from direct sunlight and drafts. If you need to take a break from your starter, freeze it after feeding and store it in an airtight container. Using the Sourdough Starter: Once your starter is active and bubbly, you can use it to make Amish Friendship Bread. Simply mix the starter with flour, sugar, eggs, and other ingredients, and bake in a loaf pan. You can also use the starter to make other bread recipes, such as sourdough bread, pizza dough, and more. Note: This recipe uses yeast to help the starter ferment and become active. However, over time, the yeast will die off, and the starter will become a natural sourdough starter. You can then use this starter to make sourdough bread without yeast. AI-generated answer. In the ER was told that everything was fine, all the blood work was perfect my heart was fine. I was told that it was probably anxiety and stress but I can handle stress very well. Hey Tammy I took the sourdough journey last summer and it took me about 6 weeks to get my starter healthy enough to make good bread. The best I can tell you is the You tube channel with Tom at The Sourdough Journey. He is perfection. Also if you just want to make sandwich bread go to The Rose Homestead channel and look up anything sourdough. She is very good too. I love to make it. You don’t need anything but tap water if you don’t have chlorine in it. If so, you can boil your water. You have to feed your starter twice daily for a good 10 days at minimum sometimes several weeks to get it healthy. Discard and feed a ratio 1:1. Also use unbleached all purpose flour. No special flour necessary. I get the Walmart brand and it works just as well.

Tammy just lay the top on do not make it air tight. Also I use a combo of rye flour 20% 80% all purpose flour - either King Arthur or Bobs Red Mill. If you have a filter on your fridge that is fine for water but the water needs to be between 80-90 degrees. I just nuke it in microwave for about 30 secs and check it with a thermometer. I only use “bread” flour for making a loaf not for starter I’ve only been at this a few years so don’t hate me if it doesn’t work for you.

So funny that we all have differing results. I have a very successful sourdough starter. Her name is Jane Dough😉. I ONLY feed her bread flour, but when I bake I mainly use Organic Unbleached AP flour (I do like King Arthur brand too) and of course filtered water. I also have the best luck using a digital scale using gram measurements. Your starter also loves a warm environment. I’m not an expert but I’d suggest you use a different flour/water ratio. A couple channels I like for sourdough are, The Preppy Kitchen, Farmhouse on Boone, and Ben Starr. Good luck! It’s so rewarding once you get your starter active. Even during the trials, it’s all good😋.

Hello beautiful 😍 Please be patient with your starter. I made mine a year ago and now I bake bread for all the family and friends. When I was making my starter I was feeding it every 24 hours regardless if it doubled or not. Kept it on a counter near the night light or the coffee maker to make sure that it’s warm enough. Also… if you have granit or other stone counters, better to keep the jar on a wooden cutting board or something similar. The other thing… don’t lock the jar, just let the lid lightly sit on a top allowing some air to get in. When I was making (and I still do) I use spring water (no chlorine), flour cannot be bleached. Make the batter rather thick consistency (I had way better success with fermentation than with the thin one). I would mix it to get the consistency of very thick peanut butter. Sometimes I would feed it even every 12 hours - no matter if it doubled in size or not. Just keep going … and good luck.

Tammy! Please don’t give up! I’ve left my starter out for almost 10 days, and then, “voila”!!! It activated! Be patient with it. It is not true that “you’re supposed” to have it in 48 hours. That’s great IF it happens, but it can take a lot longer, as well. I do encourage you to maybe start with a rye flour, as it is more robust. Also, I no longer use grams or any other measurements! Add enough flour to water ratio to make it a pancake$type consistency. Then, set it in a warm place, stir once(vigorously) a day, loosely covered. Too many “experts” over-complicate this. I have been successfully making artisanal and “basic-sandwich-loaf” ever since watching and trying all that “My Gabled Home” channel has shared. I make sourdough every week and I DO NOT FEED my starter in between, nor do I do discards!!! It doesn’t have to be complicated and it isn’t! It is going to happen for you! DON’T GIVE UP!!!
