(Excerpt from a Coast Guard investigation memo) CLASSIFIED! FOR AUTHORIZED VIEWERS ONLY! On August 10th 1955, during the ongoing 1955 hurricane season, a massive rainstorm front washed over the Eastern Seaboard ahead of the approaching hurricane Connie. During said rainstorm, an as-of-yet unexplained event precipitated a simultaneous outage in all active lighthouses on the US and Canadian East Coast, leading to widespread disruption of maritime traffic and temporarily halting all shipping in the region. During said event, the newly appointed lighthouse keeper at Echo Point lighthouse (primary eyewitness to the following) made an unsuccessful attempt to relight the main light, only for the lens to mysteriously shatter soon after. They were then hailed by a (currently unidentified) ship in distress over radio, and attempted to manually guide said ship to the lighthouse island to wait out the storm. As the ship approached the island, the lighthouse keeper reported seeing an enormous octopus-like tentacle emerge from the murky waters, wrap around the ship, and swiftly pull it under the waves. The ship was lost with all hands. The lighthouse keeper remains stationed on Echo Point and all interrogation has been carried out over radio, as the passage of hurricane Connie prevents any attempt at retrieval. Further investigation into this incident is to be handed over to the FBI once the hurricane season has passed. Top priority placed on restoring all lighthouses to normal operation. Any further inquiry into the matter is to be avoided (barring exceptional circumstances), to concentrate the Coast Guard's efforts on the aforementioned top priority and for handling the ongoing hurricane season.
