As a 16 year old geek in 1986, I religiously read the UFO magazine and used to talk about UFO's a lot to just about everyone. I even submitted articles to the local newspaper about the phenomenon which at that time was alien to my South Asian culture. No need to say that I was ridiculed by just about everyone for my passion for the unidentified flying objects. Now the subject is consider worthy of academic discourse which even as a teen i knew it would one day be.

I was an Anthropology major at a large state university in the early 70's. And I had taken all of the Anthropology courses I really wanted to take. So, my advisor let me take a course called Readings which was a graduate level class. I had to read one book a week and I would come to his office and discuss the books. To my amazement I was allowed to read whatever I wanted. I chose the books that were available at that time about UFOs, ancient aliens, and the paranormal. I worried that he might get in trouble with the department. He was a very cool professor and one of my favorite teachers.

I say there's something on Earth that does seem to scan everything and react to our consciousness. Whatever it is. I mean I tried ONCE, and only once in my life to "meditate" (I was in crisis too) and I asked for an answer from anything intelligent, visualizing some of the "Alien races" I could visualise. And the day after, 2 books were on the porch of our house, title "all the universe". Not even soaked at all, though it was raining, so it had to be put there mere moments before my parents got out of the house and picked them up. To me it's still crazy, but IDK... I asked for a sign, anything really. I got 2 books.

I too, am a PhD candidate who is deeply interested in the issue. There are so many ways this topic could be studied. At the very least, a societal study could easily be conducted on this issue and actually have an evidence base to the so called "societal reaction" to the announcement of the existence of UAP. Right now, I doubt there is any such study having been conducted and if the results come back as "people are ready" and wont be shocked by such an announcement - it gives greater government more confidence / less of an out not to release data. This only adds to an evidence base that doesnt exist - boom - there is your next research topic!

Interesting conversation! I have the theory that most debunkers either feel personally threatened by the possibility of the UAPs/occupants being real (so it becomes an emotional trauma/ fighting for your life response because they are afraid of the unknown/change the topic would bring if it’s confirmed and accepted beyond a doubt) OR they want to be accepted as an authority figure so they can prove to others how competent/smart they are (meaning that they “can’t be duped” and people should accept their judgement on what’s real/important to talk about and what isn’t). Both are deeply personal motivations speaking to human insecurities and/or issues with ego.

@DevilDears the second motive is definitely encouraged. Be good if ALL academic research the underpinnings values & ideology of the author could be talked about. Because these influence both the research question AND methodology used. In the humanities, in particular, research is NEVER objective in nature, but it is ALWAYS PRESENTED AS SUCH. Rather - either the facts AND/OR how the facts are interpreted is ALWAYS SUBJECTIVE IN NATURE.

Interesting that she says “like everyone” since 2017…not everyone. As a liberal Democrat who reads and gets most of my regular news from liberal/left-leaning news sources and has liberal friends, I’d say the group know as “liberals” is the biggest group resisting this issue and has brushed it off as still not real. And the liberal news leaders won’t report on it & liberal opinion writers are angry even hearing about it-even after the NYT 2017 groundbreaking story. Most of my friends still snicker and refer to little green men and refuse to believe it. They are still so tied to the stigmatization and don’t realize how indoctrinated they are-even the government saying “these are real” is not enough for them.

I think there is a misconception that skeptics - like me - don't want it to be true that aliens are visiting us -- rather than just being logical people that want actual objective evidence before believing in vague claims.. I can't think of anything I'd like to be true more than aliens visiting the planet - which. logically, makes me even more skeptical since I'm predisposed to want to believe it. Science is an adversarial process, and, done correctly, it is an attempt to prove others, and yourself (your own hypothesis), wrong. It is absurd to me that people complain about scientific skepticism being an intentional conspiracy to stifle the 'truth' while making subjective unscientific claims that no scientist should accept. There is a phenomena that people don't understand and make vague assertions about it being aliens from another planet -- that is all. Skepticism is the logical default position until objective proof is presented.

Ridicule is something we learn as children. If something is different or not understood, ridiculing it is the best way to distance ourselves from it so that we can be one of the 'cool kids.' Some people outgrow this, most don't. That this topic is more accepted now might be an opportunity for us to evolve past the fear-response that leads us to ridicule and stigmatize. Also, scientists who are more concerned with their reputations than with digging out the truth of a controversial topic are a potential problem. So, thank you, Maya Cowan, for your bravery!

Matt, regarding Mick West: For me the biggest flag that he could well be an agent is his efforts in debunking Havana syndrome. I can sympathize with people having a hard time letting go of 80 years of programming when it comes to NHI. Havana syndrome being caused by an ADS weapon on the other hand is completely plausible and well within the boundaries of whatever unethical things the US and Russia have done in the past. We've had the technology to give people brain damage at a distance ever since the development of radar. The fact that West is so opposed to this for me strengthens the case that he is directly or indirectly employed by the govt.

I particularly found the comments around Mick West interesting...because he claims to be an open-minded skeptic, which is where I place myself on the spectrum...but he consistently makes grave logical errors in his "debunking" and I find him incredibly frustrating. Indeed I have found the vast majority of scicomm to be particularly given to logical fallacy on this topic, which I find very odd...why is that? Why is this topic one where they lose all sense of how science is done? It has been so egregious that even though I have had a deep love and appreciation of science for more decades than most KZbin audience members have even been alive...I have completely given up on scicomm. On the other hand when I ran for president in 2020 there were energy devices used against me that made no sense based on my electronics training inside the Air Force. I had experiences the shortest, which was two weeks and it seemed like I was getting an operation using energy. The other three lasted nine months. It goes beyond the technology that I was ever trained about as a communications electronic technician. One of them was just pure energy that could cause enough pain that it would cause your muscles to contract. One seem to be a field that could monitor what I was doing. In the last was like an apparition that Felt like a cool mist that could wrap around both of my hands at the same time for example. I tried to report it to the Air Force OSI at Hill Air Force Base, but they wouldn’t look at the evidence But instead decided to laugh at me for running as an independent presidential candidate. My favorite debunking is when AARO director sean kirkpatrick said to Marik that the gimbal video was a glare from the sun and Marik goes "that one took place at night" LOL. @22:15 Her response to the "flat earth" question from her friend is so cool lol. People have such out dated uninformed views. Listening to Maya speak about conspiracies @32:25 and how in the past people who might believe in one conspiracy might believe in others as perceived by a third party is interesting but also made me laugh because America is such a uniquely stupid country in the sense that so many of our conspiracies actually end up having some sort of legitimacy to them. How many times has a spy agency been caught spying on Americans illegally. How many times has there been some form of corruption involved in a large financial or political scandal. The UFO cover up. The Co-Intel Pro spying. The NSA leaks, telecomm data splicing, xkeyscore, various other programs. Hell, we can't even put the JFK thing to bed since they STILL won't release every single record related to the records act passed in the 90s!! My point being, it feels as though it's simply a matter of time before we find out that more conspiracy theories have truth to them than not, and whether or not they're all true or not is now irrelevant - as many others have noted about our current society we tend to believe what we feel has more emotional truth than actual truth. That is to say - if something is conveniently true (like my favorite political person did something I like even if it turns out to be not true, I might believe it because it makes me happy). This notion is everywhere these days. Oh and for what it's worth Maya - I think what you're doing is incredibly important work! I am proud of you!

That's a big part of why I think the coverup has been going on for so long, at least in countries with large religious populations. The idea of the governments trying to conceal alien technology to keep using fossil fuels or build weapons is a smoke screen. ;An interest in UAP's is yet another manifestation of the human interest in wider questions of existence: of the imagination, contemplation, and creative speculation. It stems from our very natures (at least of those who let themselves out of their daily "boxes" from time to time!)...because WE ARE CURIOUS. It is through our CURIOSITY AND QUESTIONING that the human species grows beyond mere survival and (I guess I have to say it) EVOLVES. NOT being curious about UAP's would indicate (to me, certainly) a lack of a primary component of the human mind. In fact, a kind of rigid numbness (or is it just plain ol' dumbness?---sorry.) I'l be interested to read her work when it is ready for presentation. Thanks for featuring her/for this videio.

At SAC headquarters and the top brass at NATO secretly concluded back in the sixties, that some survey of the earth, and the rate of our technological advance was ongoing, and still is, but they could not ascertain by who, and for what reason.

I'm her dad, and it was cool with us. My dad was David Ian Cowan, who was into some pretty esoteric stuff. I'm a total skeptic, but there's room for all kinds. We're very proud of her. She is doing what she loves, and how many people can honestly say that?

@@DebbieDomestic thank you, that's awesome how you support your daughter. In many cases we hope our kid's college education, and all that investment, brings them a high paying career in order to justify the costs of their education. UFO - ology isnt in the top 10 career moves but her happiness is number 1. Yes.

thanks Matt, great show but I expected some meat to chew. She's studying for her PhD this topic, so any theory to it? So many questions around stigma, society, etc but nothing concrete to talk about, i hoped you'd cover her phd studies deeper at least some minutes.

Oh they are real. 🛸. Whatever they are they have many stumped, But not all. 😉 😎 👽 I’m hooked on the subject and would love to study it. Remember! UAP has been reported for decades. I don’t care what people think when I mention this subject. I have been laughed at and made to sound crazy many times by colleagues. It won’t stop my interest in the subject. My interest in this has been going since the 70’s as a kid and also being brainwashed by my mother whom had psychic abilities.

tbf it makes sense why there is more skepticism in the hard sciences because they're waiting for hard scientific evidence... that's why they're hard scientists It annoys me that they're so skeptical but at the same time I get it.. it's kind of a waste of time to spend so many decades running around talking about what may or may not be. Just release the goddamn evidence already so everyone has no choice but to acknowledge and then we can do some proper studies collectively.

And there seems to be a misconception that people who don't believe in vague subjective claims of alien visitations just don't want it to be true.
