I took a tiny plane from Fairbanks to Coldfoot, Alaska. Since it’s up at the arctic circle the pilot had to use 5 different GPS locators to fly since once you get near the magnetic North Pole GPS is almost useless. I never knew that until that flight. It gave me a whole new respect for arctic pilots.
@cassiespencer6134 Жыл бұрын
GPS is indeed virtually useless without a functional compass. The two go hand in hand. Although GPS will give your current position, it's no good for navigation without a functional compass. In short GPS can tell you where you are at a given moment. However, it can't give you a corrected* magnetic heading to your destination. *for declination and magnetic deviation.

@@cassiespencer6134 I learned all the way back in Cub Scouts that nothing beats a current topo map of the area you plan to travel through. That and your sighting compass saves a lot of nerves. Great info.

@@cassiespencer6134 It's _possible_ that the most important trick I learned, when trying to find civilization if you became unsure of your path, was to remember to line up interim points on your map in such a way as to avoid the 'walking in circles' phenomenon. I figured if that was important enough to mention to someone who was supposedly already equipped with both map and compass, it must be a very good idea. Nice to know even if I can get a GPS and an emergency locator beacon, I can still have some hope with nothing more than map, compass, and pencil! 🙂
@cassiespencer6134 Жыл бұрын
@@abcde_fz Topo maps (with a waterproof coating) along with a compass have worked for a very long time and of course don't require battery power. That said GPS is very useful as well and one should become both familiar with and experienced with both. That said, and more importantly is the fact it behooves one to be able to find or erect a shelter and start a fire in 'less than ideal' situations, among a myriad of other abilities.

Yessssss very good - a bush flying horror story! If there is something more rare than the sci-fi horror genre, it´s the aviation horror genre. This genre is literally not existent (well there was at least one movie a decade ago called "Ghosts on a plane" and that´s it) so thank you very much for bringing this awesome story!
@theDoctorwitTardis Жыл бұрын
This is a top-notch level of story-telling. The description of the setting (location, weather conditions, aviation specific terminology) does such a good job of conveing a specialized but otherwise mundane (as in not fictional) profession, easing us into the more fantastical elements to come later on. This is a crucial part of telling a convincing story, especially a horror story that so many authors skip to get to the scary bits, not realizing it is essential to make the reader feel that he has a good grasp of the narrative before sweeping the rug from bellow his feet. I'm so glad the author spent quality time developing the main character and his world before plunging into the fantastical concept itself. Seriously, hats off.

I liked how technical the use of vocabulary was for flying an airplane in at least the first 12 minutes of this video (until I stopped to write this comment), but I do have to correct something a little bit past that. At 12:16, you say that if one of your wings stalls due to a tailwind and loss of power, you would enter an unrecoverable "death spiral." A death spiral is actual aviation terminology, but what you're talking about is a spin. They are, in fact, very different. In a death spiral, the plane enters a bank and the pilot becomes spatially disoriented and the plane flies in a circle. Thinking the plane is at a level bank, the pilot will pull back on the control yoke/column/stick/etc. and tighten the radius of that turn, hence the term spiral. A spin is what the narrator described in the moments before the timestamp. A spin happens when the wings exceed the critical angle of attack, but for whatever reason, only one of them stalls. Spins are easily recoverable, but by my count, the plane was at 500 feet in the story, which at low speed would have indeed been unrecoverable. Now, there is one thing working forward if you lose an engine, as in most planes, the first thing you do when entering a spin is closing the throttle completely to avoid losing too much altitude, and then simply pushing the rudder in the opposite direction as the spin. I'm an avgeek of about 6 years and aspiring airline pilot, so I just had to correct that.

I was under the belief that Bush planes had a very nice glide to them and given altitude they can potentially glide for miles smoothly and controllably.
@Transilvanian90 Жыл бұрын
It probably depends on the model, but things like a fixed landing gear with huge tires can cause a lot of drag, hurting that glide range. I looked up the glide ratio for the DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver aircraft used in this story, and it's a pretty weak 7:1 ratio. That ratio means that it can travel 7000 feet for every 1000 feet of lost altitude. That means that, at the mentioned altitude of 1000 feet (very low), it can only travel 1.32 miles before hitting the ground (or 7000 feet). Smaller, bulkier planes tend to have worse glide ratios, whereas a B737 and B747 have 17:1 glide ratios.
