The WRTR and RTR changed my life. I promise that's not overstating it! I'm excited about vanlife in a way I was not before this event. I'm excited about the community I get to be a part of, the places I'll get to see, and the chance to get back to being a part of the human race. I'm so grateful to Homes on Wheels Alliance for existing and putting this event on every year. Maybe I'll even get the courage to volunteer next year!

I just found you so I’m catching up on all your vlogs. I’m really glad you’re learning to manage mini van van life. It’s really hard when we are forced into this due to hardship. It will be a little better and have ups and downs from there. Regarding Baja California, Do Not go and Never bring your daughter. The Cartel has completely taken over there and it is in no way safe. Please, please, please do not go. You can google it, so many people have gone missing and are eventually found dead. Enough of that horror story. Keep on keeping on on ❤

I just found you today so I'm not sure what your story is but you did say something about "this unplanned journey" (something like that) that made me think this wasn't exactly in the immediate plan. Anytime I've found myself overwhelmed with a situation that wasn't my choice I simply turn it into my choice... And it makes it a little easier. I don't necessarily have social anxiety, I just have first meeting anxiety I guess? Once someone reaches out to me I'm all in but I need that one person to pull me into the group and then I'm pretty much okay. I've learned that if I make it my choice and my decision- whatever the situation- then I can try to make it a little more fun. Open up your doors, set up your outdoor chairs or whatever you have, smile at people as they walk by. You don't have to wave, you don't have to even god forbid talk 😂, but I've learned that if I smile they might talk first and then it's all good. I wish I was there to give you a hug and we could stand on the outside together and give each other courage. I'm at a giant life crossroads and can't decide at 60 years old if I want to give this a shot or if I just need to buy a house and stay put. *** The fact that I'm currently sitting in a wheelchair, having surgery on February 1st and then 12 more weeks in the wheelchair tells me maybe I need to stay closer to family. But I have dreamed for years of buying a small "something" and traveling and I'm not getting any younger! I think I'm leaning towards trying a little traveling and if it doesn't work I can sell the motorhome and buy a house. I want to be close to the grandkids but that doesn't mean I can't travel while they're in school- I'm just afraid of getting sick or hurt again and being 5,000 mi from anyone I know. What would I have done if this broken leg had happened halfway across the country? I'm thinking a wheelchair in a class c is going to be a little tough😅. You can do this! It sounds like right now you don't really have a whole lot of choice so you might as well make it fun! And, don't worry about what other people think- (which is my biggest downfall... I'm always worried about not being good enough and I'm tired of it)- it's time for us to have some fun! Just keep telling yourself that you didn't drive all the way to the RTR to either sit in your van or turn around and leave- and you know you're going to kick yourself in the butt when it's over and you didn't participate. You've got this! Maybe I'll be at the next one with you. ❤

Hugs are so valuable, we could all use more of them if you ask me. I'm sorry to hear of your health struggles. But yes, you can definitely still travel! There were a couple of people at the RTR that live in their vans in a wheelchair. Don't give up on your dreams! I hope everything works out for you just the way you want it. Keep me posted. It’s sounds like you found your tribe from the crying at the end. That’s always an incredibly healing experience. I was pretty much the same after my first Wild Goose festival a few years ago. Going back is always a non-negotiable for me, that community fills me for the rest of the year even if I participate in little interactions and just soak it in.

Maybe this is just what you need even though you never planned on it. You sound like you had an amazing time. I lived in my single cab P.U. 30yrs ago and nobody cared. The cops would knock just to check on you and offer you a sandwich, coffee or something. They were kind. It seems you're on the West Coast which I think might make this life a little easier, I'm on the East Coast and it's gotten terribly hard to park anywhere safely. Unfortunately I think it's going to get worse here. I haven't lived in my vehicle since that time 30yrs ago but it looks like I may have to in a few years if not sooner. You're very smart about what you're doing and you met a bunch of terrific people. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

I’m so glad that you had a wonderful time at the RTR! I know you said you were still kind of standing off to the side a little bit, and experiencing some social anxiety. But that would be normal for you. For you to go there and be able to just jump right in and talk to everybody and be involved in everything would never have happened. Because that’s just not you. But that’s OK. You being who you are is always, always going to be just fine. You had a goal to go to the RTR and you went! Yay!! But I can feel your tug to want to get back to the Sacramento area to be with and Near your daughter. I hope she knows that she has a wonderful mother who loves her so much and is so proud of her! I bet it was fun looking at all the other vans and seeing what the possibilities really are! From here on in, I believe your life is going to increase and improve incrementally as the days go by!! I’ve watched tons of vanlife videos but only since watching you did I realize I always felt badly for people living on the road and thinking this was all a housing crisis or cost of living issue. Glad you got to enjoy the RTR and thanks for sharing some of the highlights. When people look at you living in your van they might be secretly wishing they were brave enough to escape the rat race and do exactly what you are doing. There is no shame in finding a way to live a more manageable and more freeing lifestyle.
