Re handling difficult encounters, a therapist taught me that I didn't need to begin at level 10 confrontation, nor make an excuse that could be argued. Start gently calm with a true reason you are not going to continue engaging or do what the other person wants you to do. You may have to repeat once or twice (called the broken record technique). That usually solves the vast majority of cases, but if it doesn't, you then step it up a notch with a firmer statement. If that doesn't work, you set a consequence. You can also state that you are ending the conversation and do so. The level 1 statement that I make, which has worked almost without fail (although it has sometimes taken repetition), is "I am uncomfortable with that." "No" is a great answer, better when left as a complete sentence, not with an added reason that can be argued. You are one kind, strong, delightfully crazy woman. I can relate.

That's a lot of steps, and frankly, a little too much work for some bs. I would use that many steps with someone I actually know and care about. Strangers? 'I don't need to hear that and you need to leave'. Periodt. Women don't have be nice all the time, and we need to stop training our girls that they have to be. Spending too much time with inappropriate behavior is not safe for a solo female traveller. I also wouldn't be chatting with randos in a dark parking lot about my lack of a sex life. :)

I agree with this. With strangers, you don't know how they're going to react, so staying calm is the best first option. Then repeated, firm statements. Clear and to the point, but non-confrontational. When dealing with friends/family, a different approach is fine.

Velcro does work okay on stationary windows. And it's probably fine on windows that you plan to take out and reinstall the window covers every day. It just didn't work in my situation because I don't want a muck with those every day. And I'm opening and closing those windows all the time. But I also used Velcro on my back window, which is stationary and I take the shade in and out every day, and it works great. At least I haven't had any issues with it yet. Exciting that you're in your van now! I hope you end up loving it. Keep me posted.

Whether they answer or not, they are forced to face/think about what they're doing/asking of you. If they repeat the silliness, then I know this person is no longer welcome in a conversation with me. "That's a very personal question in my book."..for questions I don't feel comfortable answering. Another good one is "That's "a good to know"...especially for insults, then turn & leave. This can also be used for just about anything someone says that you don't know how to answer.

One of the things I ended up doing to combat the bland food experiences is buy a general spice blend that you can add to a variety of foods to help increase flavor. I bought a 'veggies spices" blend because it is good on a variety of types of meats, veggies and processed meals like soups, ramen, etc. It sure helps elevate the game on those "edible only" meals!

Hi Birdie, it's kind of sad, in a way, that we have to be discerning at all, having to judge each situation, is it going to help us or harm us. Wouldn't it be wonderful, if everyone we met, was a good person. I was like you, believed that people could be trusted, but life's encounters knocked that out of me in a big way. Now, if I'm approached by a stranger, especially in a situation where I might need to exercise a little more caution, such as late at night or in less populated or isolated areas, my self preservation antenna goes right up, & how I interact with them, depends very much on what they do. There are overt & subtle warning signs that you can learn to watch out for, that will help to keep you safe. Discernment is a skill that we learn, with practice, we're not born with it. I think it's wonderful that you love people, that you see the good in them, & never stop doing that, but people have to, in some way, show you that they are worthy of what you have to offer. Always keep in mind, that no matter how we live, safety has to be our first priority. ❤

I know you're absolutely right about everything you said. Thank you for taking the time to help me understand the gravity of these things. It's not that I don't know that. It's just that my instinct to be nice sometimes overrides my self preservation instinct. But I do know I need to let that self-preservation win out in situations like these. So that's why it's good to hear from people that it is okay to not be nice sometimes. Sometimes that's exactly what you need to not do. Thank you for that. ❤️

Hi Birdie, I know that you do know these things, the one thing you're not, is silly. But you're quite right, it can be very difficult to override our natural instinct to be nice, and it's not that you have to lose that, in fact, you never want to lose that. Our instincts usually tell us if something is not quite right & if you feel that, at all, then it's time to let that side of yourself take over. Our self preservation instinct is there to protect us & is just as much a part of us as every other aspect of our personality. ❤
