As soon as you read the words "Olga of Kiev" I thought history is written by the Victor. I love when authors use history. I love it even more when it's about a lost race. The Derevlianians are a tiny footnote in history, but here they are resurrected. St.Olga's Christian name was Elena.

Reacting to this story... The Adam Smith(1) that got sent by accident, he should have stayed and helped defend the post. If the twist is correct, Adam1 and Adam2 have been the same person but separated by fate to become two person to see and properly handoff the role... Or that they should have been 1 person that they should have both stayed to defend and keep the outpost safe.

SPOILERS FOR MY THOUGHTS ON THE ENDING AHEAD: So from what I'm understanding, Elena is probably lying about what will happen when the souls get their bodies back. She really is Olga, and this is all just a way for her to continue to exact her revenge. The statue bodies are not destroyed simply because if they were, the souls would most likely have nothing to try to go back to and fade away. She keeps them around so that the souls suffering can continue and they will be locked in an eternal cycle of attempting to reclaim their bodies.
