I owned the DVD of this series and I remember on the menu screen that loaded up there was the question 'Do you want to watch Bangkok Chickboys?' When you selected 'No' it selected 'Yes' anyway and then loaded up the real menu screen., LOL!

The guy with no vocal chords (peter baynham) is one of the people behind Borat, he was Chris Morris' (Peter Baxendale Thomas) sidekick when he was on Radio 1 and he is onw of the writers of Alan Partridge. Such a funny guy!

The episode was filmed round the time mad cow disease was in the news and concern about what the cows were eating which led to the disease. Hence the farmer insults from Alan.

To give some context to this episode, it was made at a time when Mad Cow Disease and the deadly human version (vCJD) was big news in the U.K. The whole country was paranoid (rightly so) about this disease and Farming methods in general.

Great to see one of my favourite actors, Simon Pegg in the bar scene before making it in Hollywood. Norfolk is full of farmers. Lynne worships Alan. He is oblivious.

I think the comments about farmers refer to the UK outbreak of what the papers called "mad cow disease" in the 90s and he took it further to include scare mongering about genetically engineered farm animals. He was talking to farmers because Norfolk is a rural region and he is on a local radio station so has a local audience.

AP presents a show on local radio which is broadcast to an area which is mostly rural. Therefore, rural issues such as farming should be covered, which is why the farmer is interviewed by him. AP's hostility to farmers isn't explained & I don't recall it being mentioned at any other time than in this ep.

I think around this episode you start to understand the whole Alan Partridge personality and why he's funny. Simon Pegg, Steve Coogan and Chris Morris helped shape and influence the British comedy scene we see today. To see all 3 in 1 episode is cool. :) Hope Josh, Tay and all of you had a great Christmas.

As someone who has done a bit of work/appeared on local media in Norfolk, can confirm you get people like Alan who put their foot in it (unintentionally or otherwise) and the callers aren't that far off what I've heard on Canary Call. Also this is my fave episode of the show, so funny.

Bit of context -- what you asked about the beef with the farmers -- the county he is in is farming heavy, very sort of feudal in spirit. Farmers are cut from a different cloth from someone like Alan, who's very flashy and bourgeois. Otherwise he doesn't have a beef with farmers, he's just doubling down on his passing insults to save face.

Norfolk is big farming territory. In the countryside areas, everyone in Norfolk is a farmer or knows a farmer so it wasn't clever of Alan to annoy to broadcast a bad joke about farmers. Great episode of one the 1990s funniest sitcoms

I'm pretty sure this was around the time a lot of cattle in the UK started getting mad cow disease (which is like the cow form of MS, it degenerates the nervous system) caused by the cows being fed raw beef. Humans eating infected meat could contract the human variant, lots of people around the time stopped eating British beef. Which explains Alan's first "infected spine in a bap" comment.

Uk comedy better than USA? Also the farmer thing is because that part of England is mostly agricultural loads of farms and poor transport links, you only go there if you are going there, there’s no through routes, so no passing trade or visitors as it’s the end of the road literally, it’s the eastern part that looks like a bum
