From what I recall, Medalist is the first work that the author Tsurumaikada has created, breaking into the the manga industry like a storm achieving tons of awards with Medalist. And whats crazy is that it was all fuel thanks to the auther being a big fan of a voice actress Natsumi Haruse, and wanting to create a manga about figure skating so that she can voice the main character. So the author hit the books and studied up about figure skating to the point of creating one of the most beloved and comprehensive manga about figure skating... and the VA for Inori is Natsumi Haruse. Kinda crazy how dreams really do come true and the author put in the hard work to make tha dream come true.

That is an amazing story in itself. I have heard about screenwriters who write a scene for a particular actor/actress in mind. This is something like that.

Suzuki Akiko is credited as "Figure Skating Choreographer" for the anime. She's a retired competitive skater with 22 years experience so the show should maintain a certain degree of realism when it comes to the skating parts.

I'm not a figure skater but having an unreachable dream because you started late so it's unlikely you caught up to people who started early is pretty relatable, having Tsukasa as an adult who resonates with Inori who had this passion despite starting late got me ugly crying

This brought me back to my high school days, when i started hockey sophomore year in high school, and parents said they would pay for classes, private skating lessons and league fees, but i would have to buy my own gear. So i got a job at 15 years old as a skate guard to get that employee discount in the proshop and free ice time. I started late too so i can relate, but as an employee who saw the same kids at the rink every day, half of them home schooled, so the only friends they had were other skaters, the mom not wanting that for her second daughter, i get her point of view. As an employee i got to do a lot of the injury first aid at the rink. I remember being called over mid day during a school vacation, when it was only the homeschooled skaters doing private lessons on the non public hours, which was very rare for injury to happen. Early teen girl was learning pairs throws. Her legs were still crossed when she landed, and the momentum drove the heel of her blade into her other skate boot. It hit right where the outside lace holes and the tongue meet, the blade cut her lace and stuck into the top of her foot. I was expecting the worst, i had latex gloves on, pocket foll of gauze pads/rolls, alcohol wipes to disinfect the dirty ice wated melting into tne wound, and butterfly band-aid to pull a wound closed. I expected the boot interior to be soaked in blood, the mom gave me the OK to cut the laces off the boot so we could take it off without pulling on what we expected was a nasty wound. Zero blood, strange triangle shaped hole in her foot. The pressure of the blade going in sealed off any bleeding. We were not allowed to tell parents or customers to go to hospital or wait for Dr appointment because of legal reasons. I remember looking the mom dead in the eye and said "if my skate put a hole in my foot i would make my mom drive me to the ER, but you are the mom so here is some gauze to take in case it starts bleeding later." The other memorable one flashed back when you brought up helmets. We had a 70+ year old retired engineer who decided to stadt taking adult figure skating classes and was at evening public skate 5 days a week. Nicest guy, super positive. But we also had to call 911 four times all because he fell back and split open his scalp and bled on our ice. After the4th time getting his head stitched closed he started wearing a helmet. He loved skating too much to quit and the ER doc said quit or wear a helmet from now on.

I really enjoy your reaction as a medalist manga fan! After I read the manga last month, I registered skate lesson in my 40s lol. I can’t wait your reaction for further episodes as well as my first skate lesson (which is tomorrow). FYI: japanese former figure skater (two times olympian) Akiko Suzuki is supervising this anime.

How's skating in your 40s? It seems like a fun thing to do to skate around at the very least. Maybe just getting some skates and rink time to have fun with would be enjoyable.

I teared up reading the manga the first time, also the second time, and when I watched the anime, and now watching you tear up here I'm also starting to tear up too, lmao. Without getting to spoilery, I feel that Medalist really emphasise the importance of making sure that young skaters avoid injury and get a good environment in general. When the anime is finished I really recommend that you read the manga! The art is really beautiful :)

Aww, I wanna hug you, you’re tearing up. ♥️ I think a lot of Yuri on Ice fans are trying to force a comparison between the two animes but you really can’t compare them. The only thing I can discern that they have in common is the main characters’ drive to excel mixed with self-doubt and some level of anxiety. It could be argued Yuuri started skating late, but he had a solid background in ballet so it wasn’t as much of a stretch.

as a Japanese who love and have read a ton of manga ever, I guarantee this series never fail to bring you invaluable experience. imo medalist is currently the best sports manga on going. I still doubt how perfectly they managed to adapt the original series, but the professional skater is involved in the choreography and the most famous Japanese musician called Kenshi Yonezu, who has offerd the songs to Chainsaw man and My hero academia is now in charge of the op. So I guess this show is gonna be so good.

I've only just started the video and already love it. The first episode trimmed and moved a few things(some likely moved to the next one) that pertains to Tsukasa and his circumstances. Edit: It also softened some of Inori's circumstances as well(mom is less severe and bullying less...hurtful).

Really enjoyed this one, from the trailers I could tell it had a lot of heart, but after watching the episode I'm enjoying the snappy humor and the proper use of CGI more, and I'm glad it's also realistic when it comes to the actual sport and how it depicts its struggles, which I'm sure we'll see more of in the near future.
