This episode is interesting because when I was a teenager i was a serial shoplifter. Mostly stole video games, cd's, other smaller electronics. I stole from my local target over 20 times. I was very good at it. Target was definitely the hardest to steal from because they have alot of cameras and their loss prevention team is very active. Target was also the only store that ever caught me. Everything this guy said was spot on to my experience when I finally did get caught. Although I was never told how I was caught and to this day I'm pretty sure they just stopped me because they had a file on me from previous thefts. I avoided all the cameras and I easily spotted the secret shopper. It wasnt hard to spot the guy who would keep circling around my location of the store and pretending he was shopping. I was the white buffalo for the loss prevention guy at my local Target. Obviously I am not proud of it. I was young and dumb and to be completely honest I never needed anything that I stole. It was more of a thrill for me to steal something and avoid getting caught until I finally was and never did it again. The embarrassment of being walked out of a retail store in handcuffs by the police while everyone stares at you was enough for me to quit stealing forever.

OMG I could have written this comment 😂 also that night in jail when I was 18 with a heavy set woman who I got arrested at the same time as me who also happened to have a bag full of dildos on her person and a t of crystal in her bra was enough for me to nock it off with the shoplifting 😂 I did get caught once before that when I was 14 at haggens grocery store and it only wanted to make me steal more tbh because those assholes were ridiculous and had big heads. I outgrew it, I have way too much to loose now but I'll still be damned if they get me in that bag tax if I can avoid it at the self checkout 😂

I can relate. I got caught stealing a 2.99 cassette single at age 15. My friends were store thieves and I was getting jealous cuz they got good cosmetics and music but I wasn't so I started stealing with them. It didn't last long, probably only stole a handful of times. When I caught, my mom had given me 23 dollars to go to the mall. She had to come pick me up and she started hitting me in the back room and slapped me in the car in front of my friends. Never stole again. I'm actually grateful because it was definitely progressing.

Walmart-in my late 40’s. Husband and I came in. We’re shopping in random areas. Noticed guy following us from A-B. From toys straight to cereal aisle. So obvious. So I watched him instead. Turned toward him, stood still and stared. I used to be a Security Officer 😂. In the checkout later, I saw him again…in a DIFFERENT outfit on with hat. He’d changed to be less obvious. I said loudly, “Look! There’s the floorwalker. He changed his clothes.”LOL Actually go catch a real thief. 🙄

I was the prey or one of these guys ten years ago. I had tried my first ever pot brownie and then thought going shopping at target sounded fun. I was the opportunistic type, big bag and all. I stole 55$ of t-shirts. When I tried to leave this guy about 400 lbs confronted me and I tried to run in that front door area. I'm 5'2 and this guy was easy over 6' and slammed me up against the glass panel and put me in handcuffs. The merch was 5$ over the limit, so I could have charges filed against me. The police took me from spring, tx all the way to downtown Houston's jail. I was in there for about 15 hours. It took two months to go to court. I had six months of probation where I had to do volunteer service, every Saturday. I had to be drug tested every time I saw my p.o. Sure, I was high that one time but I had only touched marijuana a few times before. Having to piss on command in front of a stranger that can see your ass everytime..yea, humiliating. I had to pay monthly fees to target as I was sued by them, to my lawyer, for the urine analysis fees, impound fees (cops took my car $500), and to the state. All in all it cost me about $6000. After that I was homeless for a while because even just having a class c misdemeanor, nearly all rental properties will deny you. I was lucky my work didn't find out so I kept my job. But I was only making $25k then and this was easily the most stressful time of my life. I moved to a new country to avoid more problems in my future with having that one charge on my record. Long story short, it will fuck your life up more than you know. Seriously, it's not worth it.

Um, are you referring to the civil demand letter they send out? Why would you pay that? The cost of Target taking you to court is WAY more than the total value of merchandise shoplifted, which is why no store actually sues shoplifters, they just try to extort money by sending people threatening letters. And why did you need to hire a lawyer? Wouldn't a public defender have sufficed?

@@arturocamaney9235 This was in 2011, so all the details aren't super sharp. But they sent me a letter that they'd sue me if I didn't pay them a certain amount in a civil lawsuit. I was already dealing with the state's fees and punishments and just wanted this all behind me, so I paid. I got a lawyer because I was told that's what I need to do. I didn't know anything about the legal system.

Target has the absolute worst loss prevention. I’m a Sheriff’s Sergeant with 26 years of law enforcement and courtroom experience and Target AP’s routinely assault suspects. I’ve sent 4 to prison and got others fired. They’re the worst.

@@timscimeca978 A hands on policy is typically up to the retailer. We in law enforcement have found that a hands on policy leads to assaults and loss of life. Most have adopted a hands off policy because it’s safer.

@@MS-ns2pj I am now a Probation Officer but about 17 years ago I worked for Target as an Plain-clothed Assets Protection Specialist. I have no idea what the rules are now but its was like the wild west back then, shit and that was only 17 or so years ago. It was fun but after I had a big ass buck knife pulled on me and dude went on a high speed with local PD. I decided for $10 bucks an hr i'm good. But yeah we were completely allowed to go hands on and detain them. Obviously I was smart enough not hurt anyone or get any of my people hurt. But I get what you're saying I worked with some people that were way too aggressive.

She started screaming and the rest of us customers had no clue wtf was happening- we all thought she was being abducted at first. Until he physically carried her into a back room. Wild shit.

While I understand the screw the corporations mentality, the results of constant theft from them result in the workers getting punished, be it with lower wages, lower benefits such as worse health insurance, and people getting laid off. That's the issue stealing there.

I haven’t shoplifted in over ten years now but the one time I did get caught, I got away with it. I had taken 6 shirts into a fitting room (not at target), and didn’t realize the employee had taken note of how many I had because I didn’t see anyone near the fitting rooms. I had just come from school, so I had a large tote bag with a binder and other school stuff in it. For some reason, instead of just putting the shirt that I wanted to steal in my bag, I chose to fold it up as tightly as I could and put it in the middle of my binder, mixed between a whole bunch of papers. When I left the fitting room, I put the other 5 shirts back and left the store. I hadn’t even made it 20 feet when an employee came jogging after me, saying they were missing a shirt and asking if they could look inside my bag. I remained totally calm and pinched the my binder together, so the top was closed. Then I moved it from side to side so that he could see all the space in my bag. He apologized and walked back to the store with his arms up in confusion. I felt bad for him, but I never felt bad for the companies as a whole.

As someone who used to shoplifter like it was my job back in college, I noticed a plain clothes LP the second I saw them. As a woman, most of us know the second there are eyes on us, they circle, they carry a cart with bullshit items in them, one time I even had one try and ask me what my favorite alcohol was when I was "browsing" that aisle. I knew the cameras, what items don't have tags or locked caps, I knew to buy an item everytime I went, used the garden section, and was constantly aware of my surroundings, and also knew when to ditch an item and call it quits. Did it for years and never had a close call. As long as you stay vigilant and smart it's actually an incredibly easy thing to do

I was an employee at Target, about 4 years first time and then 3 years so 7 total. Lol stole random things too. Never got caught. I always thought they over inflated their skills because I was not a super thief lol. A number of years ago I bought a Wireless phone/landline from Target. I got a big annoying shock when I saw a mish mosh of old phones in the box. I went to customer service to complain and was told they were not accepting the return as if I was trying to put something over on the store. I asked to speak to a manager who agreed to give me the item I bought in exchange for what I bought. My guess is that it was an "inside job." After that experience I stopped shopping at that target.

The undercover agent at our neighborhood Target is VERy obvious. I saw him watching someone. He had a Walkie talkie on his hip and was on the large side. He would stare everyone down like they were criminals as well.

​@@mmg8830 Thank you! I was diagnosed with anxiety at around age 10, autism at age 13, and bipolar at 17. Each of these disabilities/mental illnesses affect me in a different way, but I've learned a lot about how to "blend in" so to speak. A lot of people tell me I don't act autistic. (Which I actually think is pretty offensive to say. How do they expect an autistic person to act?) Anyway, I've also learned techniques like meditation and grounding, which I would love to share with people who might also be struggling

Prob 6 years ago I went to Target. Had to use the restroom on the way in. Found someone’s keys in there. Just me in there. So 1st I went outside and tried the fob alarm to see if they had left already or in store. Was thinking most people need to use restroom on way out. Car was still there. So come back in and try to give the keys to a cashier. She says she can’t take them and I have to wait for whoever has this guys title. I had rescued a kitten and needed litter box, food, bowls etc. Was in a hurry. Then this guy walks up and questions me, but rude as hell. Yelling like he’s my Dad to hand them over. So I walk away, go get the kitty stuff thinking I will just leave keys at customer service on way out. He follows me like I’m a goon. Then within 5 min or so 4 cops show up. The bad kind. Tell them what happened, give them the keys, ask for Id, I show it. Then they tell me I’m trespassed for a year and to leave. But they are surrounding me and at least one of them has their foot wedged in the wheel of my ,now full, cart. I told them u should really get over your God complex, it’s friggen Target, and remove your foot if u want me to leave. They get pissed. So I tell Target boy have fun putting all my shit away. Have not been back to a Target since. They can kiss all of my behind

Loss prevention is fun for the first two years, then the shit gets boring. I've worked with shitty coworkers who purposefully add articles to the theft amount so they can pad their stats with more felony cases. Heck, I was even a douche to my coworkers when they would blow a case we were working together. I got consumed with catching people stealing to try and be the best. In reality, the pay was trash and management is constantly up your ass to catch people stealing. LP has to follow 5 or 6 steps before you can detain an individual, the most important being never losing sight of the perp once you see them hide merchandise. This is a tough one especially when you work alone. The pressure from upper management incentivizes you to take risks where you can mistakenly detain people who aren't shoplifting; or where you detain someone who chickened out and tossed a 'concealed' item when you lost sight of them for 5 seconds. One retail store I worked at was also predatory. In about 2014, they implemented a system where anyone caught stealing was charged a $300+ fee. This was on top of us having to call the police if they stole over $20 in merchandise. People are already upset and possibly hostile when you catch them stealing. Now I have to call the police and tell them we're fining them $300+ dollars? Shit isn't worth it. Especially after I considered how these retail stores rob their associates with shit wages.

I worked in a cash vault. I used to count bank deposits. Head of security told us some stories of how people got caught stealing. One guy who started working with us doing the same job used to ask odd questions about how the facility ran. And asked us odd questions like if we were going to steal how would we do it. I thought he was a plant.

I’m dying to know if they keep track of people they don’t pursue. If a guest has red card accounts and steals things that are low value to where you’re not going to bother chasing them down but you did see that they took something, do you know who they are through their red card account and keep track of them? Or is it not that deep? Asking for a friend.

Yes, they do. I took a marketing course and the textbook talked about that and it specifically identified Target as doing that. They also track what you look at and for how long.

Yes. We do keep track of people with their RedCard account. We also have an online case management system with profiles on anyone who steals or almost steals. Some stores also have the old fashioned "pictures on a board" method.

My partner works in LP/AP and as a person of color he was concerned about racial profiling and of course it’s there but the way they are trained is to look for other things like the big empty bag sitting on top of the cart, big baggy sweatshirts, body language, etc. He said racial profiling, even if you were working based on that, is not going to get you more stops and will probably hinder your ability to make stops.

Other things and behaviors you look for give it away no need to look at skin tone. Easy to spot thieves aftershock while you start to pick up on a sort of aura they have it’s hard to explain. Like they are putting out bad vibes?

A woman at my local Target in Bellingham, WA was tackled by loss prevention because she was breast feeding her 2 or 3 month old infant under a blanket. The infant's skull was smashed like a melon right there in the entry way with the mouth still latched on the mother's breast and the baby was killed. This was just this past month or two

When I walk in to my local Target I can hear LP freaking out on the radios and see associates rolling their eyes as this guy claims I'm responsible for thousands of dollars in theft. Finally, one afternoon, I was approached by a regional manager in the lounge area in the store. He and three other LP's were seated around me trying to discern what I was doing( as there was a large window and I could act as a lookout). After 30 minutes of all of them observing me studying python and watching Letterkenny clips on KZbin, I heard the regional get and mutter " John is a fucking idiot " and walked off. At that exact moment, the other LP's all got up and said similar things as they walked out. I myself have been an LP and found out later that he had also called the Wal-Mart where I worked and made several claims of theft he had witnessed on the floor but could not provide footage due to store policy (BS). I was later approached again and was asked whether I knew him personally or had any past altercation with him. I stated I had never spoken to him nor ever encountered him and was given the manager's personal email in order to contact her in case anything else occurred. And was even offered a position in the LP department at another store. I turned down the offer but offered advice on how he could be more productive in the store and stated that he should learn more about store processes to limit shrink on the macro level. Needless to say, this made stealing way easier in the future ; )

I once accidentally stole a Gatorade. I was 3 days postpartum with my first and it rolled under his carseat in a way I didnt think could happen. When I was loading up I saw it and I felt so bad. I pulled the carseat back out of the car and brought it in. I was crying, I felt so bad (also... postpartum 😂), they were so confused when I brought it back in to pay for it (back when it was still $0.98 too lol). Ive never stolen again!

I have done this a few times. Always on accident. I have just kept it moving at least once. It just seemed pointless to start a commotion over a piece of candy or whatever it was but I did feel bad. I can see that happening post partum for sure. Brain fog.

aren’t electronics taken to the register immediately by the employee to checkout? i can’t imagine many high dollar electronics are stolen since stores already have procedures in place to prevent this. and something small like a SD card or headphones can’t be pocketed without taking them out of the larger packaging it comes in so i don’t think many of those get stolen either

I stole so much stuff from target, back in 2015 when it was easier. Like hundreds of dollars over a 3 month period. I actually got caught stealing a hat lmao $10 hat, thank god. They just took my picture and banned me, which is awesome considering if they had caught me on one of my sprees would’ve been much worse.

I work loss prevention at Target. I can say that most of us feel the same way. Target actually has a budget for outreach so if we see that we can offer to buy it for them, We also partner with local charities to help connect people with resources.

Well this was a painful white episode and I’m only half joking. I can’t count how many times I’ve been followed through a target or noticed the same person conveniently restocking or folding in every isle I happen to go to for the entirety of my time in the store. I would never even think about trying to make people think I’m stealing just to be funny. This was a fun episode.
