Filming in 3D in JAWS 3's time was usually done by splitting the left and right images between one 35mm frame. So each picture side was dealing with half the film frame real estate. Which made for more 16mm type quality. Add to that J3D also did some experimental electronic visual compositing for some of its FX you have a rather rough quality picture definition wise.

In the novelization, the villain is a voodoo priest with a grudge against Michael. The priest controls the shark as a murder instrument to kill the Brody family members. Plus, Hoagie is a DEA agent on a mission to bust a drug ring. The alternate ending was the actual ending played in theaters. I always thought my mind was playing tricks on me when I saw the home video version coz I knew I had seen the shark impaled on the bow of the ship.

It makes sense that they did the alternate ending in 4K, since it was the original theatrical ending. It was likely preserved as part of the original negative. In my opinion, it's kind of surprising that we have good copies of both, since the 2nd home video ending could have possibly been neglected after the VHS release.

some interesting changes in the 4K’s new mix: 1. just before the cut from the dock piling on the shore to Ellen & others on the plane, the score cue “Saying Goodnight” (used later when Hoagie brings Ellen home) has been added. strangely, it seems to work … but … it was a missed opportunity to use Michael Small’s original (excised) track for the scene “Flight to the Bahamas”. 2. the sound for the shark’s snout breaking through the wall in the sunken ship is used a bit earlier when Michael pushes through the door & falls, narrowly avoiding the shark in the corridor. 3. Michael’s voice when screaming “JAAAAAAAAAAAKE!” (i have to imagine the person responsible for this change had a sense of humor) 4. if you listen closely, the score cue has been shortened/edited to align with the cut from Jake & Michael in the water (“so from now on, we’re gonna study snails, eh?”) to the airport. now all the dialogue can be heard as Ellen & co approach the plane. 5. Ellen’s line “take good care of Jake” & Michael’s line “i will” is missing … this is same as the shark stab only (original US Theatrical) cut of the film.

Jaws The Revenge over Part 3 or 3D any day of the week for me. I only really enjoy watching Jaws 3D when it’s in 3D. Then it’s a super fun 3D movie & it looks much sharper. Can’t go wrong with The Revenge it has The Last Star fighter (Lance Guest) also from Halloween 2, Micheal (Freakin) Caine, a great White Shark🦈actually in the Caribbean, Mario Van Pebbles doing a Jamaican accent & a big ass angry Shark! What’s not to like. Yeah it’s no Jaws 2, but I definitely put it over Jaws 3

I agree, this 4K looked great and after trying to watch part 3, I forgot just how boring it was. Part 4 is the better film all around. Part 2 is still my favorite in terms of the shark attacks though and I was about 7 when it came out in theaters, so thats the one from my childhood.

LOVE your JAWS 2 one sheet poster in the background. Saw JAWS 2 five times as a Junior High student in the Summer of 1978. Unlike the director of JAWS: The Revenge, JAWS 2 director Jeannot Szwarc knew what he was doing and did an awesome job with what started as a very troubled production.

It is not the alternate ending. It is the real ending. When I taped Jaws the Revenge off its initial HBO premier that was the ending. When you play the Nintendo Jaws, that's how you kill the shark in the final boss fight. I have no idea why Universal will not release Jaws with the correct ending.

The 3D tech back then would split the 35mm image into two, which would essentially create a very bad quality image if you are only watching one part of the split image. In order for Jaws 3D to be viewable in 2D on home video, a single half is used for the transfer. Which is essentially 16mm or worse quality. Thats why the image on ever home release has looked muddy, blurry, and low quality. Basically the 4k scan would only make this look worse, which is why they attempted to bump up the resolution using AI

They used the AI onJaws 3 because the combination of small 2-perf information and the blurry, weird lenses they had to use to achieve the native 3-D effect. That is the only reason why they did that. None of the other Jaws movies used that format, and none of them got the AI treatment because of that. It’s no mystery. Why three got singled out.

Jaws 3 is a notoriously bad looking movie, because the 3D filming means what we get on home media only gives us half the film frame with a full picture on it. A lot of the effects shots were done on video tape, which means there is literally no HD elements for them. It's soft and blurry on every format. There was no way to restore detail because the detail was never there. Jaws the Revenge was shot on 35mm in scope, so it shouldn't take that much to release it on 4K.

Thanks for the review CHH! I'll take Jaws the Revenge over Jaws 3 any day of the week. PQ and AQ are FANTASTIC. But Universal should've included the 'alternate ending' (the original U.S. theatrical ending) via seamless branching instead of a stand alone bonus feature. HUGE missed opportunity.

I always thought "the revenge" sub-title meant the revenge of Ellen Brody for killing her son. Never put together that it was the actual shark seeking revenge. Now that's just plain silly lol. Even in part 2 the oceanographer lady said "sharks don't take things persinally". But oh no, in part 4 this time it's personal! Anyway, the alternate ending was always played on TV for some reason, and I always liked that ending much better than the original too. There were a few other scenes sprinkled into the TV version too. Part 2 did the same thing with Martin at the town hall. I havnt seen this movie since I had it on VHS, so maybe it's time to revisit.

Actually, Canada also got the "Stabbing then Sinking" version as well (as opposed to the nonsensical "Exploding" version). I remember it clearly when I saw the movie twice (!) at theatres in the Summer of 1987.

Just want to say that using the term "Upscale" to describe a remastered and restored 4k film is inaccurate. If the film had a 2k DI or if the film, like Jaws 3, used AI, then that is Upscaled to 4k, 2k films are upscaled to 4k and some films like True Lies and Jaws 3 are AI-Upscaled to 4k. But there is no Upscaling when films are scanned and restored at 4k. Upscaling implies that you are artificially scaling up and enlarging something that was smaller to something larger. I just wanted to give you a heads up on that. Films restored at 4k are Native 4k and therefore not Upscaled. What you are saying is correct, its just the use of the term that is wrong and has implications that aren't true and contradict the correct details you are saying. I am going to ignore Jaws 3 and pick this up with this knowledge that you've given and hope that it really is a proper 4k restoration. I work a lot with this AI Upscaling tech so I know exactly what to look for and can spot it a mile away. And even-though I am a user of it I can firmly say that it has no place in 4k film restoration. I have done lots and lots of testing and there is no reason to use it on anything that is 1080p or above and certainly not 4k. The real use-case for AI-upscaling is in Standard Definition bound material. Stuff stuck on videotape, wether it was shot on videotape or all film elements lost. Then there is a use as High Definition is the standard today, SD material can be unwatchable and there there can be improvements. But trust me when I say it's a software that doesn't need to come close to film restorations or 4k discs.

I watched jaws 3 in 3-D and it was awesome. I cannot watch jaws 3 in 2-D it just sucks. Jaws 3-D was in your face, a fish head coming right up to your nose. I will definitely buy jaws the revenge on 4K, as for 3 I would buy the 4K just for an extra copy of the jaws 3-D blu ray.

All the stuff people are crying about was literally all on the last decade old blu-ray. Its really not the AI, its that its a garbage 3D movie shot in 1982, wasn't using the peak of tech so zero chances it was filmed anywhere close to 4k. I can watch the old blu-ray and literally see all the things people are complaining are all AI in the blu-ray presentation. Its taking a garbage 3D movie from 1983 in 3D and then trying to compress those 2 images into a 4k image. It probably should have been left in 1080p blu-ray. 4k for Jaws 3D probably hurt it more than helped.

But I think for 11 minutes there’s a whole lot more you could’ve done with this review. Pick out some more examples, talk about the audio quality, talk about the coloring, highlights and shadows, etc… Just felt like you were repeating yourself for 3/4 of the video.

Oh I don’t blame you for being excited. In fact this video actually got my curious to maybe snag myself a copy. I always liked The Revenge as a kid so it kinda holds a soft spot in my heart. And the fact that it got such a good 4K transfer makes it that much more appealing. I just would’ve loved to see some more image examples of what you’re talking about. You used something like 2 or 3 examples in 12 minutes. Would love to have seen more shots of the underwater sequences, the different characters closeups, the shark, etc.

I'm aware the 4k has some issues, but it's being way over blown! (Just like American Graffiti). But if you have the means to watch the 3-d version, that's the preferred watch, for me at least.
