My father Robert Norse was one of the survivors of the butterbox babies! He was born in 1943 and was at The Maternity home for two years waiting to be adopted. His real mother was working there for the two years he was there. He was adopted in 1945 I believe. The couple that adopted him, were actually going to adopt a little girl and Dad would wait for them when they came to visit the girl and they became more attached to Dad and adopted him instead. They were wonderful parents to Dad and great grandparents to me and my 2 brothers. When Dad turned 40, he found his real mother who put him up for adoption. She welcomed him with open arms. He found out he had three half brothers and met everyone of them. Happy ending! ❤️😊

My neighbor grew up in Nova Scotia. He and his sisters were adoptees......he later found out, as an older man that in fact, he was a Butter Box Baby. One of the lucky ones that survived. I’ll never forget him coming over to our house and showing my Mom all the evidence about his past . Both his birth parents and adoptive parents were gone by then. The story fascinated me, knowing my neighbor was a “Butter Box Baby”
@jerryjennyc5352 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if the house is still there?
@maryellenjames798510 ай бұрын
he would not be a butterbox baby as that term refers to the dead ones buried in butter boxes. He would be a stolen child or a victim of the ideal maternity home. And what kind of proof do they have? There was no birth or death records, and when adopted everything was made up to fit the narrative

I’m from NS and my great uncle was one of the people who survived being born at the home and got adopted and later found his past family after years of not knowing where he came from, it’s a long and crazy family story of ours and it’s crazy to think of how easily we could’ve just not known him. He’s now happily living in Germany and still keeps in touch and visits as much as he can :)

This story is devastating. As I watched this, I felt such heartbreak for the mothers who did want their babies or at least did want their babies to have the best quality of life just for them to be taken away for greed or mercilessly slained b/c they weren’t “profitable”. How can you look at an innocent baby & think those awful things? I type this as I lay next to my 3 month old baby, I’m so thankful for her. My heart goes out to the innocent victims & survivors of this story, my heart hurts for them but I’m glad they put an end to the horrors that happened here. I wish the Young’s really got to feel the suffering they deserved.

A few years back I found out that “Aunt Margaret” aka my grandfathers aunt was actually found on the side of the road abandoned in Nova Scotia due to her club foot. She almost didn’t make it but my great grandparents took her in anyways and spent all they could (they were not poor but not rich) to give her medical care. I had no clue until years after her death... she was a very strong and proud woman and my mother was named after her ☺️❤️

This happened a lot in Ireland, up until 1996. We called them the Magdalene Laundries and they were run by nuns/ the Catholic Church. Such horrible things happened here and many children were adopted by Americans. No records of there real families. There’s many movies, bocks and documentaries based on these laundaries, The Magdalene Sisters, Philomena, Close The Door, The Forgotten Maggies and so many more. You can also google these laundaries and especially “The Lost Children of Tuam” were around 802 children died during its 36 years of being open and many of them cannot be named due to the lack of records

Ireland had a version of this. They were called the Magdaline Laundries. They were run by the catholic church. If a girl got pregnant young or out of wedlock they could be sent there if their family couldn't face the criticism from everyone else (Sometimes their parents called the police and the pregnant girl/woman would be carted away in the middle of the night). At the laundries, You guessed it, they washed clothes and bedding from hospitals and other businesses. Women would work until they gave birth and they would never see their babies again. The babies would be in the churches orphanages for people (mostly rich British and American families) to adopt even though the babies mothers were like 2 rooms over. It's only now people are finding out they were a laundries baby. These people are 50/60 years old now and some are only tracing their parents back to a grave. They also are finding mass graves on grounds of old laundries. They couldn't take care of so many babies, they killed some to ease it all. Tuam is a huge mass grave of 900 babies. So shocking and so sad. Imagine finding out your mother lived her life without knowing what happened to you and died not knowing? and people knowing all this was going on and gladly sending their daughters there because they were afraid of what the neighbours would say.

Do you know what amazes me about the laundries, I’ve read a lot about them because my family are Irish, to think about atrocities like that you think ‘oh it must have been a long long time ago’ The last one was closed down in 1996 That’s 1996 Less than 30 years ago!!!
