I'm Coding a Platform for Developers

I'm building a platform for programmers and folks interested in computer science to discuss current tech & programming news, how we can utilize it as programmers, and what it means for us and the software development industry. It's under the same umbrella as the Dev Notes newsletter, which is a newsletter for programmers and folks interested in computer science - but the platform is to foster community and encourage discussion about these topics.

UPDATE 2/12/2024: I've moved all of the following videos in this series to this playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLp_L1ltSVItxLzsF7599xtBPQm6hQ05MV I've let scope creep take over this project lol, but I'm in the final stages of the MVP. I'll have private beta testers onboarding soon, then I'll launch the public MVP after any silly mistakes are hashed out. Stoked!

Was nice to see the process you go through when not understand something. On KZbin seems like everybody has a clear understanding of everything, so seen someone struggle as much as I do makes me feel like I'm not doing something so wrong.

Hey man, I just wanted to say this stream of consciousness style format is pretty rad. Even just outside feeding your chickens and thinking out loud. I found it comforting to know I'm not the only one who walks around and thinks like that. Strangely meditative as well. Keep it up, man! I dig it!

Hey man, I love this style series. I wish I documented some of my projects, I might actually finished them! I've used quite a few different AI's to assist in coding and my favourite so far has been using ChatGPT as more of a Junior dev. Writing smaller functions and classes and writing or planning tests. I tend to work on larger projects that don't use publicly available frameworks, so getting an AI to grasp the context of the code base has always been a bit of a issue. They way I see single vs multi tenant apps, is a single is one deployment per customer. Multi-tenant is a multi use deployment. So if you were to write a CRM, designed to be self hosted, this would be single. A multi version of this would be a SaaS CRM, like Hubspot etc.

Single Tenant vs Multi Tenant Most of the applications in my company are single tenant. As an example the company I work for has a base product. And then for each project we get, we create a new branch for the individual project based off the most updated version of base. We then deploy this new isolated version of code with its own database, server instance, etc. That piece of software would then be updated and modified by a project team dev for creating project specific features. These are single tenant apps and completely isolated from each other. Their own domain, their own user accounts. The only thing they share is a base product version when they first get spun up but ultimately they remain completely separate from then on. For multi tenancy (in my example), you might have one code base and then based on user access or account info, change features or views. This can also work but for our company, it’s highly regulated so things need to remain completely separate. We manage all of our tenants on Octopus which is a super helpful tool for deployments. Hopefully that example helps a little

I really love your channel, i think mainly because you are relatable. Do you have videos on how to do youtube/create content on the side? I am studying computer science and working half time but i also try to create content as well. It just seems like a lot to get everything in live under the hood. Working out, girlfriend, study, work, youtube. Very challenging.

Yeah its a bit weird at NextJS with the App Directory and the Pages Directory, but for my understanding, the app Dir is the new one since NextJS 13 or something and the Pages is the old version of Routing. And in the Documentation You can switch between App and Pages Routing, so it's just which one you would prefer more. But I am new to NextJS so I don't really know that much, just what I read overall and experienced myself in the last few weeks :)

Nice! looks clean and feels fast. Design is a little bit too css framework'd and console shows a bunch of 403s, particularly fetching Helvetica font (isn't Helvetica like native to browsers lol) and a couple layout shift errors (worrying), so styling isn't working that great. Other than that, works great! congrats

Seemed to me that single tenant meant something like Discord, where everyone has their own server, and they can invite people to their server, but multi tenant would be something like Reddit, where you can create your own subreddit and invite people, but people can also just come and join? But then I think it'd make more sense for them to be called private vs public tenants or something.

will this series cover something like that a customer comes you don't know what the customer wants and you work out everything with him? i need something like that because i want to make customized software for customers and i don't know how to build it and i have no one to support me and no company behind me to show me a way and i think you are competent for that. if this is not the series can you please make a complete series just about how the kick off 0% looks like up to 100%?

Hey! Could it be possible that you misunderstood Vercel’s terms? The specific section in the Vercel Terms of Service regarding sublicensing is found in Section 3, “Your Content.” It states: “By posting Your Content on or through the Services, you grant Vercel a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully paid, sublicensable and transferable license to use, copy, modify, reproduce, distribute, display, publish, store and perform Your Content only in connection with its provision of the Services and for security to protect the Services and third parties from fraud, malware, malicious files or content, viruses and the like” . The important part here is: "only in connection with its provision of the Services and for security to protect the Services and third parties from fraud, malware, malicious files or content, viruses and the like” .
