I'm concerned about Dune: Awakening!

I like that Funcom are working close with the Herbert Estate to make sure they stick close to the source material while also making an alternate history timeline. As a fan of alternate history and divergent timelines, i like this chance as it does not so much put a fresh coat of paint over an existing painting but rather paint a whole new painting with the same color pallet and i like that.

So its the games creative team with the estate creative teams to make an alternate dune story. Was interesting to watch.

As a long time Conan Exiles player, that bought the game in beta and has a on/off relationship with it, i'm more concerned about the game mechanics than lore. Funcom f*cked up Conan. To this day is a buggy game with problematic servers issues, and no one (admins) give a damn thing.

6:45 in the first boock regular guns, artillery to be precise, are used by the arkonnen to crumble the caves and crush atreides troops... Also later paul use similar gun together with a nuke and a sand storm to destroy the emperor's ships on the ground.... So conventional guns get used 2 times in the first boock and in both cases they are incredibly effective...

There's a new variable anyway: the players. If you don't allow the players to influence the world by removing Paul and Harkonnen or Atreides dominance there's very little for the players to do or influence. I feel like Funcom made a good decision in this case.

I mean, if they are just going to the "alternate timeline" route, they could very well add a feature where you can persuade CHOAM to let you travel to Caladan or other planets so you can perform some assassionation or quests like that and then Arrakis is the main planet of the game. I don't know but I do agree that they must work something out. My concern is melee combat, I think they should make it the most efficient or powerful form of combat to feel like Dune.

i really like the idea of it being a survival MMO. if it will be like rust, im VERY excited. rust has an aweful community, but if you ignore the toxic community, the game itself is some of the most fun ive had in years. and ive been wanting a rust like game that is something other than your typical post apocalyptic modern day flair. i would love a fantasy version of rust or even better, a scifi version which this looks like it is. i agree with you on the combat though and the lore concerns. i hope they can get those right and feel really like Frank Herberts work. also the concerns about it being too empty due to it being Arakis is also valid but because this is an alternate timeline, they could be really creative with this to make Arakis feel more lived in. it would be interesting to explore maybe the Fremin achieving their goal of beginning to terraform Arakis and you can come across lots of greenery or forests deep in canyons that is shielded by the harsh sun etc.

As a Dune megafan, I'm sure you're aware of the board game, which can also have the alternate history feel. The board game is what really sold me on the universe though, it made the politics of the six factions (two Houses, Freman, Guild, Emperor, Bene Gesseret) so clear, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. So yes, sometimes an alliance of Harkonnen and the Empire carries the day - the house moving to prominance inside the empire, while the Emperor gains control over the spice. Sometimes the Guild can carry it,leaving Dune as a chaotic mess where no one faction has control over the spice they MUST have. Atreides and Harkonnen can even ally - something that Paul himself considered very briefly in the books. Clearing back before the events of the books lets the politics play out, and with little native life, everything is going to have to be politics. They're going to have to flesh out every faction and make their meddling both present and something that players can interact with.

@@AllBleak I'd say it's more along the lines of Diplomacy! It's the Amazon result that is just "Dune" with the subtitle "a game of conquest, diplomacy, and betrayal." It's amazingly asymmetrical and awesome - it's like every faction breaks the rules in amazing ways. Like the Spacing Guild doesn't even start with any troops on the planet - but eveyone pays THEM for troops, since they're the ones shipping in the troops from off planet. And everyone has to pay the Emperor for weapons (who also doesn't start with any troops on the planet). Meanwhile the Freman don't have to pay anyone since all their troops and weapons are on-planet and they just get them for free. They just have a limited deployment zone (since they're walking/riding worms rather than taking starships) and have to kinda walk to destinations that are far away rather than just orbital dropping there. And this is all highly balanced! Like there's been a tournament of it for 30 years (the newest version is a re-release, and GF9 did a great job with it). It's really best played with 6 is the only caveat I have - it's just not as fun if all the factions aren't in play. Note the other game, Dune Imperium is still a good board game, but it doesn't give me the same awesome connection to the lore that the first Dune Board game does.

Oh'Bleak... Foremost, loved your presentation! Kudos! Most players will be too concerned about themselves to lament a never-born Paul. One way or another, it was either get rid of him or postpone him, but in the end the players themselves and their emergent, fledgling 'families' will be their own primary concern. Yet Arrakis and the great worms will survive them all. Primary concern from my corner? (1) Combat, (2) Combat and (3) performance. Conan Exiles simply re-skinned won't fly. And right now that's what the game looks like. Is Funcom simply out to make a quick TenCent buck? Or a great game? We'll know shortly. Agreed that if real progress in-game requires explicitly joining one of only two families Atreides or Harkonnen, then that sucks. Generally, hard coded two faction games lack the anarchy inherent in human psyches. And given that the Sardaukar were ultimately subjugated in the Arrakis fight, how can they be THE police force? Plus let's face it, Sardaukar affiliation would appeal to many players, so why not a Sardaukar 'faction' rather than an overarching NPC police force? Personally I'd want to join the Fremen. Cheers!

Fremen each carried a maula pistol, a dart gun that was highly effective due to the danger of using shields on dune. The alternate timeline might have also changed the use of ballistics across dune. The melee combat does look pretty clunky rn, but these guys built Conan exile, a largely melee based game, and said they were putting an emphasis on systems they weren’t as familiar with first, so the melee will look much better at release.

Hey there :) I heard that PvP areas with a valueable resources will reset on weekly basis with also changing whole areas. Once in a week a huge sandstorm will hit these areas, change map layout and destroy any player bases build there.. I just wonder how many layouts they prepared before they start to repeat. As for melee combat, yea... right now its really poor.. Maybe we will get something closer to "For Honor" style... but thats a bit too much hope I guess.. If I think about some of the DLCs or expansions... 1st that came to my mind are different "burried under sand" cities build within rocks / mountains that will eventually be discovered after sandstorm.. maybe some cave biomes deep under ground with some lichens, moss maybe fungus to give players diversity. Guns are really rare, tho I might think it will be more like bolt weapons? something like a futuristic automatic crossbows, so we will be able to collect darts? Since regular ammo would most like be super scarce. Im super excited no matter what.. just hope HW requirements wont reach too high so I wont have to build new PC just for this game.

I have zero concerns about the story. Their route is the safest, following canon would've made things impossible for an MMO setting. This way players can actually pick sides, everything is fresh, there is no golden path, no correct choices.

@@AllBleak 2 - the combat indeed seems to be worrying... there should be fluid movement and acrobatic flourishes like in assassin's creed 1-2 and the standard reload animation we saw is just not it either!!! 3- the adaptation of the lore is not only to be expected (any adaptation has to do that, Lynch did it, Villeneuve did it even more so) to me that's a source of interest rather than concern : How will they spin it? What changes did they go for? That's interesting // first and foremost... Paul Atreides does not exist in this game. That's a big fanfcition what if right there!!!

Ballistic weapons would make a lot of sense for dune to be fair though, knowing you can't risk a las gun incase they have shields, and the likelihood people wouldn't often wear shields in the desert due to summoning worms, Ballistic weapons kinda make the most sense, they either kill or prove they have shields which means move into melee combat. Lore wise I think it's quite possible Ballistic weapons might still be around since missile technology is still well understood and used so it's not that much of a leap with how intelligent mentats are that Ballistic weapons would still be pretty available although almost never used outside of dune and some other scenarios.

BRO the 1984 David Lynch movie was awesome. The game interior is huge, I wouldn't worry about losing interest in the scenery, esp if you love the lore of Dune as much as you said. Melee is going to be a thing, but the developers said the game will be an FPS with skills/abilities. It'll be more like a MOBA than a MMO, I suspect anyway. Also the game is a game, the focus is on player-experience not story-telling. This isn't a novel-based narrative, it's a multiplayer interactive experience. Lore was necessarily altered to fit the format. Game looks fun, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Dune, without Paul? So... it's not really Dune. The lore for the game will be different than the book. So, Jessica gives birth to a girl. So, the events of the first book would have been sending Jessica's Daughter into the test of the Gom Jabar. Then she would have been assigned to a Bene Gesserit concubine school. So... not much goin' on there. By the time period where Children of Dune occurs, that's where things would start happening. Jessica's daughter would be having a son, which would be the Quizats Haderack. Her son would be fully in control of this Messiah boy. While Paul faught in opposition to the Bene Gesserit interests, this boy would be a member of it. Surrounded by nothing but Beautiful women all day, every day. This guy would be completely loyal to the Bene Gesserit. The only thing that I think he'd face is a disliking for taking orders. When he weilds so much knowledge, he would be demanding to give orders rather than take them. How conflicts would arrise... I don't get it. The Harkonens leaving Arrakis was a trap. The Harkonens would have remained on Arrakis, and the Atreides would have remained on Caladan. Most of the struggle of the multi thousand year span of the books is making Arrakis a planet with oceans, rivers, and lakes, then trying to revert it back to a desolate desert. Without Paul being there to disrupt the ecological stability of Arakis... the lore would be completely different. Now, for Jessica's grandson to take the water of life... I don't see anything meaningful enough for him to become God Emperor of Dune.

The Harkonen's would still have laid the trap and assuming it's according to the bene gessuit plan wiping out Leto could be a good thing but Jessica's love leads her to tell him about it and since Leto was prepared the conflict could have continued and Leto's forces could've been preserved the main cause of the total loss in the main timeline, leading to a drawn out conflict running dune is still incredibly profitable so pretty much anyone would want to and assuming the main timelines events are still relavent we could assume Leto snitches to the houses about the Emperor leading to the same civil wars as the main timeline minus the (word I'm scared to say desert people war) and potentially everyone fighting over dune or at least trying to secure spice, the freman could also act as another force just trying to stop people taking Spice

The original team put allot into the conan world to leave little hints all over. this dosnt even look like dune, or even showcase any dune like areas outside of just some sand.
