In this video, I review the Leica Q3 28mm and discuss why you might want to stick with the 28mm Summilux f/1.7 version even though Leica just released the new Leica Q3 43mm f/2. I dive into build quality, the advantages of the 28mm focal length for street photography, and the new features like the tilt screen and 60MP triple resolution sensor.
If you're wondering whether the Leica Q3 28mm is still relevant or if you should make the jump to the Q3 43mm, this video is for you. I'll be getting the Leica Q3 43mm soon and will give you a full comparison after testing it for a few weeks. Make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell so you don’t miss that review!

Hey Robbie! Couldn’t agree more! Came close to selling mine and switching to the 43 but realized the 28 really is perfect for fast paced street shooting. Especially with how easy and quick it is to change between MF and AF for zone focusing.

I have owned previous Qs including the Q3 and always had the feeling 28mm was too wide for my personal taste and sold them all after some time. Always thought I could make it work, specially the Q3 with 60MP and cropping, but somehow it was not for me. Now I have the Q3 43 and I have to say it is the Q I always wanted - Q with longer focal length. It sounds clische, but for my personal hobby use it changes the way it shoot. With the 28mm version I had the mindset of cropping in post. With this 43mm (beside prefering the compression of a longer focal length) I have the mindset of a prime lens, thinking much much more about composition etc. and somehow I like this more :) Just my two cents and personal experience so far, curious about your upcoming videos, after you having more time with the camera :)

Thank you for stopping by, yes, I agree 28mm can be tough to compose for and it’s too wide for a lot of us. It really comes down to preference and I’m happy that we have options. Thx for watching and stay tuned for the Q3 43mm review. 🙏🙏

I think each focal length has its merits. It basically comes down to habit and style (even though I personally tend not to use the word style when it comes to photography) of shooting. I am more of a 35mm person, so I chose the M system with options to change lenses. The 43mm APO lens is great, but it will not surpass focal length as my first priority factor. If I am to pick up a Q3 at 60MP resolution, I probably will go for the 28mm with the option to crop. However, I also think that Leica have listened, which is why we see a 43mm version available. On a side note, there are a lot of second hand barely used Q3 available in many market place, which might be good for bargain hunters.

That's right, selling the Q3 and buying the Q3 43mm is a really bad deal financially. I own the Q3 and you can crop extremely well up to 50mm, above that you loose to much.

One of the advantages I have found with the digital crop is hard to expose environments. When cropped in it will only use the crop area for its exposure calculation. Helpful when you have a challenging lighting situation and can only take one picture.

Thank you for your great review. Everything else aside, we are all biased to what we like or what we want. Even the 28mm is great for some folks it is a show stopper for me, I would never buy it. I was hoping for a 50mm Q3. I am surprised why they offered 43 instead of 50mm. In conclusion, I am happy to see Leica finally give us some options. I am sure both 28mm will continue to sell like hot cakes and the new 43mm will be even more popular.

Thank you for stopping by. My guess on why leica released this focal length is size. The dimensions they wanted to keep both the measurements of the cameras very similar if not identical based on what they did with the hood. I might be talking out of my arse though.. Yes, I agree.. I agree Q3 “Summilux” is not the same as the 28mm M version in terms of character; additionally Q3 28mm is closer to 25 or 26mm in focal length whereas on the M version it’s actually 28mm. To me, that was a big deal. To make things even more confusing, Leica is using the Summilux banner on cellphones for example with Xiaomi.

The compression and distortion of a 23mm to be cropped to mimic a 50mm is flawed to begin with. I have not bought a Q3 just because of this, Leica is known for their primes not through digital crop. My 43 is on order. Even though I have two types of M11s. I want an AF for convenience.

@ianforber
@ianforber 13 күн бұрын
I never noticed a difference between my M11 + 50mm Summicron and my Q2. I know it goes against perceived wisdom but compression doesn’t exist - if the distance between the camera and subject remains the same, the only difference is depth of field. Less so with distortion but if you stand back and take the picture at the same distance as you would with a 50mm (the pseudo frame lines in the Q are a great way of judging this) the picture is the same except for depth of field. Often people want to capture the image in camera without needing to crop (especially portraits) so their natural instinct is to step forward and fill the frame with the subject which will then show heavy distortion. I think if the Q cameras allowed the user to magnify the EVF image to show the in-camera crop they had selected it might go a long way to reassuring 28mm users that 43mm isn’t such a big jump (obviously you would do the actual final crop in post, not in camera).

"even the lens cap is made of metal", the buttons "are clicky" - riveting stuff. The body is magnesium alloy and the top plate aluminum. The point being, you need to know more about your topic before having something of *value* to offer an audience, rather than yet another video of reiterating specifications and an excuse to share some snaps but using the latest camera name in the title. This video could've been a discussion of 28 vs 40 or 43 mm (of course there are differences and subjective taste). Or the details of an Apochromatic designed lens. Consider it a lesson learned.

In some situations, 28mm will be more suitable than a tighter 43mm lens. I did give context as to why it is “better” and at no point did I mention image quality and lens performance. I do have the 43 with me and I will be releasing a video about why it will suit a different group of people. I own the Leica Q3 and would not sell it for the 43mm Q3, which would ultimately be a very bad financial deal. The fact is that both are the same cameras, both have a great design and high-quality workmanship. If you are about to buy a Q3, you can consider 28 mm (in crop, perfect up to 50 mm) or 43 mm (in crop, probably suitable up to 75 mm). People want everything that is new, if the 43 mm version had always existed and a 28 mm was coming out now, the internet would be just as full of them. If a Q4 comes out in a few years, I probably won't replace my Q3 with it but will complement it with a Q4 43 mm, maybe.., but today I'm fine.
