I've been wondering about this. I think she had debts and skimmed a little from it for her daughter. The debt collectors noticed and came to collect. This is my opinion.

She did steal in the end, though. She takes money from the envelope she's obviously supposed to be giving to loan sharks of some sort. She slighted them, and that's why things ended up the way they did. At least that's how I saw it.

This depiction was more clear in the original manga. Anime didn't show some men getting dressed after "that". There is one more thing anime made it obscure was she was dancing on the top of some building roof top. She took a somersault from there and dropped from her head.

@@d.l.brinkmaniac3542 she didnt steal it , that money is supposed to pay her debt but she take some of it to buy a dress for her daughter birthday , thus she didnt pay the loan or late to pay , then the yakuza pay her a visit.

It may have been hard to understand the description, but she was not stealing money, she was selling her body. She probably had a large debt or something. But she was still able to give her daughter a normal life and loved her, so I must say it was a very sad end for her. As you said, it was a relief that Aira held her at the end. The show is truly amazing, as are all the episodes so far. And I was very moved by your reaction. Thank you.

It might not be clear in the anime but in the manga she was dancing on a building and then she jumped off it.

in the manga, the mother and the daughter holds hand in the last panel, implying that the child also died. In the anime, they depicted it as, them staring at the sky on the balcony.
