He started talking three weeks after we brought him home - he was almost five months old by then. We talk to him a LOT! We play with him all the time, talk to him, sing to him, etc. He's probably genetically-inclined to mimic well, too - we give him the majority of the credit!

I never tire of listening and watching. As a child in the 1950's in rural England, we had a blue budgie. So friendly and talkative. I loved him. Disco reminds me of him so much! I cannot believe that the love we feel for our pets disappears into nowhere. Just as I believe that the emotions we feel for our fellow humans...it does not disappear! It goes somewhere and makes a bride for us to cross. (Sorry if you think that I'm a loony...I'm not. Just someone who has lost loved ones, and found joy in Disco.)

Sad to know Disco passed away a while ago 😞 Disco was a special one. Knew a lot of words/sentences. In my opinion this little budgie was a little diamond to be proud of. I also have two budgies, a male and a female (siblings I guess), but they did not get the attention they needed when they were young. After 1.5 years I started to tame them with my girlfriend. Now, almost 5 years later, they are tamed and come to us. It was a pretty long journal. They were very scared and screaming. Now they are still screaming......... to get them out of their cage. The male can be handle with our hands, the female not yet unfortunatly. Both are 5.5 years old now.

Lena Svensson - sorry I can't respond directly (another case of "Linked Comment" where there are thumbs up and down, but no way to reply). It is a myth that females don't talk. They can mimic, although they may not be as apt to mimic as enthusiastically as males, and may not develop the larger vocabularies that males are known for! (:>)

My lil buddy is a female, and mimics the 'boo-beep' noise my phone makes when it's plugged into the charger (a Samsung). Females do vocalize, but to a lesser extent. Bird gender stereotypes are often the opposite of what we expect in humans.

Disco..You are a STAR! I had a good, talking parakeet (budgie in UK) (Sooty) and I always reckoned he was Premier Division, but Disco, You are Champions League. Sooty died 3 years ago and I STILL miss him, so I'm glad I've found Disco.

We never tought our budgies to speak but they used to imitate the sparrows outside and the sounds we made when 'talking' to them.

And believe me, that is just as cool as the talking. :) I think Disco mimics the Blue Jays, and I'd be thrilled if he learned a little chickadee. Since drafts of any kind are dangerous, it makes it hard to keep windows open too much where he is (anywhere in the house), but maybe this year we'll figure something safe out for him.

Depends on how close you are with the budgie and how well they can fly. We had one who was a very good flyer and we didn't go outside with him because in case something scared him he would have probably flown away. Another one was not a good flyer and we went outside with her. We were very close with both so it probably would have been fine with both of them but I understand the wish to be careful.

No, we won't risk that - taking him outside, as in OUT of his cage. We have heard too many sad stories from people whose birds never took off, ever, until one day, and it just took the one time. We're not willing to risk that at all. That's us - others' mileage definitely varies, I understand that! :)

Disco was four months when we brought him home, and we started talking to him right away; he started talking three weeks later. We started by using just one phrase - "pretty bird" of course - and then once he got that down, we started a new one. We can now teach him more than one phrase at a time, and some pretty long ones, too. Just take your time, be patient, and keep talking!

I got my little budgie stevie nearly 2 years ago now and disco his became his favourite KZbin channel to watch, we have an Alexa with a screen and pop disco on KZbin whenever we need 10 minutes to ourselves without stevie coming to cause trouble (like if we’re eating a meal he can’t eat) we call it disco/budgie tv and family members will say put disco tv on for stevie please 😅 thank you for sharing disco with us, he’s bringing joy to a lot of strangers faces even years after he passed❤️

Very good mimicry. Seen a few Disco vids, very good. I have a budgie that has word to object association and word to activity association. Cup of tea, tickle, come and see me (wants to come out and play), "washing machine" when I'm doing the laundry, telephone, spinny (one of his toys). Plus others. He'll even ask for food and water and for his bath when he wants it.

Douglas Millward Wow, - I am so glad you posted this, I really enjoyed reading about your budgie. (His name is...??!) I wish more/some studies would be done on the smaller parrots - like budgies - because I think there is a lot going on there, perhaps comparable to their larger cousins. Disco only seems to do a little of what your budgie does, but what he seems to do that intrigues us quite a bit is substitute parts of speech correctly. Example, when he mashes up a sentence/phrase (which budgies are known to do - do you experience this?), he mashes them in such a way as to retain parts of speech so the grammar makes sense. (The meaning may not make sense, LOL, but that usually just makes things funnier to us.) The original noun will be removed and a new noun will be inserted, a verb will be subbed for a verb, pronouns for pronouns, etc. He even seemed to figure out that "jag" in Swedish could be subbed for the English equivalent, "I." I did chat with an avian vet (not Disco's, but another vet (with a specialty in bird behavior) who came to meet Disco early on who said there is an idea out there that budgies do have the idea of grammar, that birds have a grammar to their songs, etc. Anyway, won't write your eyes off any more, just fascinated with your bird's behavior - and our bird's behavior, too. Fascinating to live with such interesting creatures, huh? :)

I have three Parakeets and they all love I mean LOVE hard rock music. Like Breaking Benjamin, skillet, and Three days Grace. It is funny when I play halo, because they all mimic the gun shots. It is really funny, because if you look at them while they mimic the guns, they all shake their heads up and down. I think it is because when I listen to Rock music I shake my head. Gondi ( My baby Parakeet) is so cute, and shy, at first, if he doesn't know you, if he is singing ( which is usually bleeps and clicks of the tongue at the moment any way.) he stops singing when you look at him, unless you sing along. then he happily enjoys it. Especially if me and my brother start singing Animal I have become by Three Days Grace. Angel and Stormy are mates, they love to hear skillet. If you play Monster by skillet and sing with someone else they know, all three birds will sing and shake their heads and wings. It is a sight to behold. ;)
