I stopped using oil on my locs as well and have definitely noticed a difference. My locs are growing faster and they have a naturally moisturized feel to them. Plus I don’t have all of those oil stains on my sheets and pillowcases, which is a huge bonus!!

As you said, this is controversial. People (hair professional or not) sometimes find it hard to accept that what works for some people may not work for others. Thank you for this video AND the explanation. I had 3 sets of locs. I tried different oils: castor oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, mustard oil, avocado oil, ... I tried different recipes of mist: 80% or 90% water + vegetal oils + with/out glycerin + essential oils... I listened professional lockticians. I tried different uses: mist, small drops of oil directly on scalp on dried/ damp hair... 🙈 *Every freaking time: buildup* It was so frustrating: why don't the routines and products other people use work for me? I don't use wax, gels or whatever ! Are the locs not for me? I have come across videos of people who don't use oils on locs. It's like an enormous weight was taken off my shoulders ! 🥲 By adopting the locs, I followed the general advice without taking into account what I knew about my hair: I never needed to grease my scalp, my scalp don't like industrial shampoos. So, I resumed the routine I had before the locs (rhassoul clay as shampoo, and a light leave-in conditioner once a week) I wouldn't say _I don't use oil anymore_ : there are oils in my leave-in, I use essential oils in my homemade shampoo 🤔

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with using oils and the buildup in the locs because I think that may be more common than most people think, especially with heavier oils. Glad you found what works best with you and your crown ✨😄

Dope hair my sister. I have to use oil on my scalp, I tried not using it and I had sores. I've returned to the way my mama did my hair when I was a little girl, my hair grew so healthy, thick and long. I stopped using oils on my locs about 8 weeks ago (same reasons and watched videos you mentioned). I don't oil my scalp because I have seborrheic dermatitis and any oil inflames my scalp. I really like the results. I use a moisturizing homemade spray of distilled water and steeped herbs (no essential oils because they inflame my scalp). I've been debating trying oils again to test the difference to see which method works best for me. *However* that whole thought process of re-moisturizing during the week and wondering if the moisture is penetrating due to the oil already there, has stopped me. Would love to see the video of the changes in your routine!

Wow I'm an oil avocate and I infuse jojoba oil with certain herbs. Now y'all got me wanting to see if not using it will make a difference. I must say that jojoba oil is very close the the sebum that we naturally produce. But I'm down to stop using it to see what's up. I do think the other oils are just too thick. But not jojoba oil, in my opinion. But I will make the change and document with pics. Thanks for this video! You're my new loc crush (I must confess I have quite a few. Lol.)

I can definitely understand not using oil on the hair. I've found that because my scalp doesn't produce much sebum, my hair does a little better when I use some oil. But I only use it on my scalp, and only on wash day. After wash day, I only use water. Since I started doing this, I've experienced softer, happier locs and less of an itchy scalp! Also, if I do feel the need to use more oil, I use an oil that can easily emulsify. There are some oils that don't seal off the hair, so I use those.
@holisticflo

I use rose water & a teeny bit of glycerin only occasionally. I live in the UK so the temperature is mainly cold which dries my hair out a lot which rose water really helps with. The main reason I don’t use any oils in my scalp is because my scalp produces a lot of sebum naturally, adding additional oils just makes my scalp feel greasy, dirty and clogged! So I use water-based products only (rose water, glycerine). I think paying attention to how your scalp & hair feels will tell you whether you need oil in your hair/scalp or not. Everyone’s different ;) Have you tried African black soap? I use the Shea moisture version. So far the best shampoo I’ve used.
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments and insight! I have seen that African black soap works for many people. I used to use it on my face and body, however it did no justice for my skin. If anything, it was too harsh on my skin, which turned me off from every trying it on my hair or scalp.

Hey, hope you're well! I haven't had a re-twist for about 4 months. gonna get one soon (I want to have a few combined). I'm wondering, when you braid your semi-freeforms, does the new growth (loose hair) meld together?
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
When I braid them, I only keep the braids in for 1 full day, max a day and a half. Sometimes the new growth does get a bit tangled. However, it never starts locking together just because after I wash it, it is a lot softer
@whitneywalsh9127
@whitneywalsh9127 2 жыл бұрын
Your locs look amazing by the way. I’m 1 1/2 month into my journey. I’m also semi free forming so my question is will my new growth continue to grow out loose or will it eventually shape itself based on my starter loc pattern. I don’t want flat locs. I hope that makes sense. I’ll probably stop using oils also because my scalp always itch lol Thank you for your reply Lo Lo
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
This is a really good question. For me, most of my roots started to grow out flat because I was no longer re-twisting and also because some of my natural hair pattern falls in an s shape, so the s shape curls are more likely to lie flat naturally. It can depend on your hair type as well as your loc maintenance whether your roots may grow flat If you don’t want flat locs you could still palm roll your locs directly after washing so that the locs are malleable and you can shape them in the form you want.
@whitneywalsh9127
@whitneywalsh9127 2 жыл бұрын
@@holisticflo thanks so much for taking the time to reply. My hair like many others I’m sure have a different textures. My front top is straight I guess and my sides and back is fluffy and thicker. I was thinking the same as well. I should shape them for now and when they start to mature I will no longer roll, well Im actually not too bad with the loc smithing method. I’ll be 2 months on the 3rd lol. I’m in my 50’s and I greyed prematurely ( not due to stress may I add) but my whole head is grey now so it’s been a challenge but I’m moving forward with no more color and embracing the silver. Hey flo I have 114 locs but they look short you think I should undo them with the needle and start over or combining with the needle would make them longer
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
Hey I think the length depends on the growth. If you feel your locs arent growing much, that could by why they're a bit shorter. Some have a slower hair growth rate than others, which is natural. I don't think that combining them would make them look longer it would probably make them look thicker. I would say that if length is what you're looking for, you could keep up your normal routine and they will definitely grow over time.

Can this style work on baby locs? My one month is coming up in two day and the frizz is real. I wanted to do a style where I can get some curls when my hair gets this frizzy.
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
I would suggest personally not doing this style on baby locs until about 3 or 4 months in. From my experience, i did this at one month and it just slowed down the locing process because it made my hair unravel, especially when talking the braids down. It could work at the end of the day, however. Definitely differs from person to person i can just speak from my own experience

My starter loc twists were done professionally by a braider instead of a loctitian, the woman was kind but She twisted them very tightly, like some pro senagalese twists. When my twists would unravel the 2 strands would be tight coils. I would detangle the coils and retwist them down again, and my hair would be 10x thicker after than tension and tightness was removed. It feels like my hair isn’t really expanding as it should because of that tightness. Like it can look so much thicker and thrive even more, and I would feel really bad if there is something that I can do, yet end up regretting months later. Should I take out all my twists and re do them them looser for them to be thicker? I want my hair to meet its max potential.
@holisticflo
@holisticflo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for your comment! If you don’t like the way they are forming I would recommend taking them out and starting yourself. Especially because you get them done from a braider and not a loctician. Especially the tension and tightness of starter locs arent healthy

Corporations are making a goldmine off of the dumb crap we are using on our hair. Locks aren’t supposed to be constantly moistened. I don’t know who told us to use all this oil and crap. Back in the day, parents used water and some grease products, maybe tea and that’s it.

I find it odd that this suggestion is on a whole lot of loc videos. I'm starting to think it's either one person or people working for that company doing it
