"INSTANT PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT POLAROID!" (that is a direct quote, I'm not making that up lol) As of Dec 19, 2022 Polaroid uploaded this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3fRZpaOo9aYjdk I guess they wanted to prove my point here? Lol. Honestly not too sure what they're trying to say.

Isn't this just them trying to defend their brand trademark? A lot of brands have the issue that their product name is associated with "that kind of item", which in return weakens their claim on a trademark. As far as I'm aware they have actively try to educate people about the misconceptions so when they try to sue a legitimate infringement down the line, the court won't be able to say they've been slacking. Of course behind the scenes those brands love being "the name", it's just in a legal sense that they don't. That said, I have recently joined the cult of instant photography, bought a Polaroid Now AND made the hunt for an affordable SLR 680, and guess what, I still end up grabbing my Instax Mini I bought like 5 years ago. I've consumed hours and hours of videos trying to get the film to work during this winter weather, and I'm finding it super hard to get usable results at all.

they need to fire their marketing team for this like... the name and brand is so synonomys with instant photos. i get this might be them trying to branch out and do other things with the brand. this is also kind of a slap in the face to die hard fans of their film.

I really wanted to support Polaroid and see the company succeed, but over the past few years, I have backed away, almost completely. I bought a total of about 5 cameras and ended up getting rid of them all. Even after all that, I bought a Polaroid Go a few months ago and was disappointed with the results. I understand that R&D takes time but Polaroid is no longer the scrappy Impossible Project startup. It’s been more than a few years since they’ve promised to improve their film. When they described their duochrome green film as “not for everyone” and “challenging” I knew they’d really screwed up. They can only get away with this because of the goodwill towards the brand. But it seems that goodwill is starting to run out. Customers can only put up with the “quirky” justification for so long…

Couldn't agree more. I've supported them since Impossible began. Wasted an amount of money that I feel too foolish to say out loud. I shot the OG polaroid film from the early 80's until it stopped production. I know the difference between what was and what is. You're correct. Impossible/new polaroid has never improved their film. Not even 6 years after buying the actual Polaroid company and its film schematics. Instead, it's time and money goes to Bluetooth speakers, very subpar cameras, and the filmframe color of the month. When all any of us ever wanted was a good film. I've sold my polaroid cameras(SLR680, 2 SX-70's) because I truly don't believe they'll ever produce a good film, again. I'm tired of wasting the money on disappointment.

Whelp, funny you ask about our thoughts on the speakers... My friend just got me one of the smallest ones for my birthday (partially as a joke because I ranted to him for the same reasons most people were upset) and ngl, it's pretty solid. Controls are satisfying and easy to use, and I dig the colors and design. Oh and it sounds pretty good. That being said, looking forward to the new chemistry (and apparently a new camera???) coming soon. Maybe. Who the hell knows.

One of your videos got me started with Polaroid film photography. Ive been shooting only Polaroid for an year now, and my experience is this. 1. The film. I learned as i went. Keeping the film cool, ice boxes, cleaning rollers every pack, handling the image from the frog tong to a dark bag (with out exposing it to the light), trying to find the optimal conditions for a shot, messing a few packs just to find the correct exposure setting on the camera, and so on. U can say every trick out there... the result was 50% at best. Many of them were my fault, but many more weren't. The defects and the color inconsistencies were troubling. 2. The cameras. I can't blame Polaroid for this, except i can. I started with a basic 600 model (600 business edition). It made descent pictures and i was generally happy. But i said to my self "Lets get the better model with auto focus". I got one. It was making crappier pictures than the 600 business edition. After that i said to myself, "ok, lets by a brand new camera from Polaroid" So i bought the onestep+, the amount of disappointment when the first pack was over... it was serious, until today i have only two i-types ever shot with it. Finally i got an SX-70. The quality of the image is better but no flash gives its own set of problems, like blurry images if the light isn't perfect. So the new camera which was like 100 euros, made worse images than a 15 euro camera from 80's. Same date on the film packs. 3. And finally the price. So i work for like 700 euros a month give or take. Every 8 shots i pay 25 euros for a pack. and of those 8 only 4-6 can be called photos. So i completely understand your and everybody's frustration with the instant film from Polaroid. I hope they can do something about it, because u actually can make a digital photo and frame it in Polaroid type cartridge, and normal people don't care that its not the original, because its better...

Am a Polaroid user since late 2019 form early 2020, then pandemic happened. Honestly, at first, I was kind of disappointed with the results of my first few shots because of the inconsistencies and what not. And also, I used Instax Mini prior that, so, I kind of compare the two at first.. But, I began using my Polaroid again this year, and to be honest, I'm appreciating more the colors of the Polaroid. Before, I was getting upset when the pictures were turning pink when the temperature's hot, and green when it's cold, but now, I'm lovin' it. I'm digging it! That separates Polaroid from Instax. If you lay all the pictures from mini, wide, square, and Polaroid, you'll appreciate Polaroid's indifference (at least for me). Polaroids give feels, emotions.. Unlike Instax, though it gives consistency, It bores me. But, I also do agree that Polaroid should improve the chemicals of their film too. Like, we don't want photos with patches anymore. Photos with some part not well developed. But, yeah, still lovin' Polaroid.

omfg, those are my exact feelings. I've been shooting with my lil Instax mini 90 for a few years now and I still absolutely LOVE polaroid way more than instax. Personally, while instax may produce clearer, sharper, more defined pictures or whatever..they honestly look dead. I don't wanna take a picture of a street and have it look like- well, just a boring dead street captured as it is. I don't care if it's perfectly clear, or comparably sharper than polaroid's. The colour hues Polaroid gives off seem so much more alive and makes even a seemingly mundane aspect of life one that's worth being in the moment for. Instax shoots life as it is. Polaroid captures a moment in time.

I totally agree with you! The nostalgia grip polaroid has on people definitely lets them get away with not really improving things. I’m still not a big fan of polaroid film (mainly because of pricing when compared to instax) and having to hope a photo develops how i want it has kept me off from shooting it. Also having to make fridge space for film is annoying.

I am one of _those_ who found you through looking up "Polaroid work how halp", and while you very reasonably pointed out that "if it makes the company stay afloat, more power to them", but I can't help but agree with the main point. Instant photography inherently always treads the fine line between fun uncertainty and gambling for 20 bucks, sure, but some actual, professional effort on Polaroid's part would go a long way. For example just out of curiosity I looked up their speaker line, and I've found pages upon pages upon pages of colorful PR-bullshit, coincidentally not an ounce of hard numbers or a spec sheet. Speaker power output, bluetooth standard, aux, battery life, God forbid frequency response? Anything? Perhaps it's out there, but it sure doesn't seem to be important for Polaroid to promote. 'guess I'm just not rich enough for injection-molded "lifesyle".

I supported the impossible project and then polaroid originals. I was grateful and excited that people were trying to save the film and all the great old Polaroid cameras. After dozens of $20/$25 packs. Despite following all the tips and instructions, buying fresh packs, etc., I'm done. Without exaggeration, I can't tell a difference in the quality of the film since they started. I haven't seen a single noticeable difference. Not a single improvement. I would get roughly 1-2 "usable" shots out of a pack...averaged. Most packs...most...were entirely bad. I'm old enough to have grown up using the real original Polaroid film. It didn't require cleaning rollers between every pack, the exposure and development was always dependable, it didn't need to be handled with kid gloves for 20 minutes after exposure, it was as archival as any negative film, THERE WERE 10 SHOTS IN A PACK. This was 30-40 years ago. Impossible bought Polaroid several years ago. They have little excuse as to why the film is still terrible, why there are still only 8 shots per pack, and (barring recent inflation) the cost has never come down. At one point, I averaged the cost of getting a single "usable" shot from the film (in my experience). It came out to around $9 per usable shot. I'm over it. I've already sold my sx-680 and an sx-70. I'll probably sell my last Polaroids, too. Going to use the funds for a custom Instax camera. Fuji is consistent, and comparatively cheap. I really wanted to support Impossible and Polaroid, and I did. But I honestly feel like they've just been taking advantage of us for years, now. I don't care about the "color frame of the month" or a gd cheap speaker with "Polaroid" slapped on it. I care about the film. And it just doesn't exist, anymore. In reality, it hasn't since the true, original Polaroid shut down. Wish I'd learned the lesson quicker. It would've saved me a ton of money.

@baconandeggs2482 Btw, Fuji did make a better version of their instax wide camera, but only sold it in Japan. The Instax 500. It had more control over the image. It's pricy on the second-hand market, though. And, frankly, you could get a 4x5 camera and the Lomograflok back for the same price, or close to it. Plus you could still use it for 4x5 negative film or tintypes.

The film is far from perfect, but the real issue is the shitty cameras. For almost 10 years I’ve shot Polaroid integral (even back when it was Impossible Project) with several custom film backs and cameras and I can say without a doubt that the film has slowly but steadily improved. The film now is leaps better than 5 years ago, and I’m sure they’ll keep improving it. But yeah, the cameras suck pretty hard. The only way to get good and (mostly) consistent results is to use a fully CLA’d SX-70/Sonar/680/670/Open SX-70 and have lots of practice with it or to get one a custom back/dedicated manual camera. The unreliability of the new cameras is astonishing. The Go is the worst camera I’ve ever used (it reminded me why I don’t use electronic cameras). I ended up converting mine into a manual TLR and guess what? The Go film format is by itself great, very clean and as sharp as the 600 type. This days (like, in the last 3 years) I’ve only got one defective film pack of maybe 60-70 across Go and 600 formats, everything else has been quite consistent quality wise… But of course I’m among a very small niche of users which use Polaroid film without Polaroid cameras (I have RB67 backs, a custom SLR and a TLR for Go) so Polaroid needs to definitely step up its camera game if they don’t want to lose (more) customers due to bad experiences with the results.

They need a legit camera. The black and white stuff is fine. People need to realize that most "perfect" Polaroids online are either photoshopped or taken with whatever expensive Mamiya backs that person owns. I've had two SX70's supposedly fixed by the Brooklyn Camera company and one two times and they are still doing the same things. Fuji would be great if they had an in between camera with the mini and the wide. The wide cameras take good photos. The black and white film that Fuji has is not that great either. Also, basics of photography. I live for the duochrome Polaroids. Just my stream of conscious thoughts. Do what you will Sweet Lou. I cannot in good faith watch any digicam videos though.

Polaroid now was my first polaroid camera :) More than often, I think that the camera pictures end up extremely dark, especially when you are indoors. However, it was a good starter camera and it made me want to buy a polaroid 600 series. My polarid 600 delivers on much better pictures and this camera only cost 30 bucks. My guess is that Polaroid wants to be the company you associate with retro products. May it be their bluetooth speaker that gives 80s vibes to their polaroid cameras. However, entering the bluetooth speaker market now feels a bit of a waste as there are many competitors which deliver much higher quality speakers.

So, I agree with the desire for a better and more consistent film but, the hardware team and chemistry team are completely different people. If the market isn’t ready for more cameras, then the hardware team needs something to do or they lose their jobs. You’re indirectly advocating for layoffs when the speakers are just a product to support paying salaries for an existing hardware team so they can make more cameras in future.

I agree. The Impossible Project Polaroid 600 film sucks. Me sad. I did buy a Polaroid branded pocket printer that uses ZINK paper. It works fine. Probably because it is just a mass produced gadget made in China and has absolutely nothing to do with Polaroid. The same exact printer is available from HP and Canon. The ZINK prints are a bit too small. So I decided to try Fuji Instax Wide. The available Fuji cameras look like dogsheet and I can't afford $900 for the Mint camera so I bought the newish Fuji Instax Wide Smartphone printer. The resulting pix didn't look too bad with the Pixel cellphone pix but decided to try it with my Canon DSLR. I installed the Canon app and the app will automatically send the JPEG from the camera to the phone and from there I use the Instax app to print the picture. The results are so much better!

This is one of those "I'm only laughing because otherwise I'd cry" situations. I remember watching your first few videos on Polaroid and having a lot of the same complaints, but getting shut down anytime I'd voice them by fanboys who assume valid criticism is the same as outright hatred and blaming the user for faults with the product. I'm still extremely annoyed how the community en large gave Polaroid a pass on limiting packs to 8 shots after they removed the need for a battery from the film packs; which was, for those of us who remember Impossible Project, the reason they gave for that initial limitation. As you said in the video, since this is the internet, I need to stress that I love instant film and understand it's not easy to produce instant film when you're lacking the chemists, the original recipe (especially when some ingredients are now banned), and the equipment has been neglected... but it does seem like they were more proactive and receptive to customer concerns during the Impossible Project days than they are now that they bought the rights to the Polaroid name. They are very literally repeating the same marketing decisions they criticized the original Polaroid for and the film community is too nostalgic to call it out. I get that this is all business and there is a need to diversify to stay afloat, but given that this new company is not a publicly traded stock, there is no reason for them to be ignoring their product issues besides they simply got complacent and want to cash in an easy check. The film community wants to believe this romanticized notion that film companies care about its customers, but with Fuji discontinuing products year after year, Kodak constantly shooting themselves in the foot with even worse business decisions in an attempt to diversify (I MEAN, CRYPTO. Did we forget about that?), and Polaroid having zero incentive to improve - we need to accept this is business and we aren't profitable. The sooner people see that, the quicker we can stop this toxic fanboy culture that ignores valid criticism, the stronger our community will be. A KZbinr shouldn't have to be the one releasing tips on how to get better performance out of a product they didn't produce, but it's obvious these companies are counting on it, yet do nothing to support us besides make a product. Sorry for the rant, but it's been years since I made anything on Polaroid, and watching this made me upset to see things haven't changed with the company. Keep it up Lou!

I appreciate you taking the time to write that up and I strongly agree. I can't tell you how many videos I've posted where the comments are screaming about how I didn't shield it from light, or I let it develop too hot or whatever. Didn't store in the fridge. Didn't pray to the sun god enough. I genuinely think at this point, you can follow EVERY piece of best practice advice and still have a gamble on whether or not the photo is gonna come out right. And for the price, that just ain't it for me

I was disappointed by the picture quality. My instax that I bought 2012(!) had waaaaaaaaaaay better quality. And there was maybe 1 fail out of a hundred pictures. With my Polaroid camera the adrenaline rush is real if a photo comes out alright or ruined 😢 (and instax are cheaper too) For being the “inventor” of instant photography their quality really sucks

About time - sold my sx70 two years ago. They're too damn expensive for such inconsistent performance, and the company is run by idiots... again. Now I shoot a Lomo square format Instax along with a Fuji Eco Hybrid Mini. Instant film is too expensive to waste and these two bodies produce keepers.

I do really like my Lomo Instant square!! Thanks for watching. Bummer about the SX70s! Those are such beautiful cameras. But I completely agree, the film is the most important part.

@@SweetLouPhotography That Evo feels like cheating, but I use it all the time because it's so often the scenario where multiple people want a copy of the same picture. I'm super tempted by the NONS sl66 square format slr, but I just don't think I would use it enough to justify the cost.

Honestly, Polaroid has gotten to be like the Emperor's New Clothes. You're supposed to want to pay nearly twice the price for fewer shots that are less reliable to boot, and it feels like the reason is because it's Polaroid™, which just isn't a good reason, in my opinion.

Also, it's annoying that KZbin automatically changes the trademark symbol into an emoji, but that's a different issue.

Well put! Polaroid likes to paint over their film issues by referring to it as “quirky unpredictability.” But they can only do it for so long before people stop buying that story.

I didn't know yt did that. Strongly agree though!! (both on your polaroid point and that turning it into an emoji is cringe)

I almost bought a Polaroid tbh (for casual use only) until I watched your Polaroid videos and just bought myself a cheaper near mint Pentax Spotmatic , it's sad that Polaroid is using their money to weird and wacky adventures instead of bolstering their strength as a film and camera company. Really well thought out video , I enjoyed hearing your thoughts about the matter. Dislike Unsubbed 0/10

This is what it is or what I should say is our choice. Instax = clean, high contrast and sharp but essentially a poor man's digital camera. Look I get it, Instax film is cheaper. But quality control - where is it ? I was looking into a Instax Wide 300 for example and all I got were posts complaining theirs wouldn't turn on or issues with batteries and that it is expected with Instax. I also believe if were being honest we know Instax isn't giving us vintage instant camera vibes. Now Polaroid... well yes there is inconsistency with film and the film itself is way too expensive. But what are we to do ? These are all relatively cheap cameras. Myself I am drawn to Polaroid because of the inconsistencies, I am perpetually creative brain driven. I take joy in the mistakes because sometimes they make magic. We all have sub-par kit in modern instants but this is the nature of the format today. Do what you enjoy and try not to get lost in the negatives. ❤
