Jim, I really enjoy your videos and you are quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. It started with your Chris Martin Umnumzaan and now I can't stop re-watching your videos lol. I bet you could probably make a tool for the Yuna by having 2 pegs on a little wood block.

Another great video. I like the way you cover a whole class of knives. I love flippers, too, but I only have a couple. Got started (mumble) years ago on thumb studs, so every time I pull out a flipper, I fumble for a second before I figure it out. But I still love 'em.
@nichartman468810 жыл бұрын
I know what the mechanics for in the push button vs. light switch flipper deployment. The rocker ones are almost on top of the pivot, and the push button ones are much farther back.

That makes me feel great, thanks man!

Try having numb hands and not being able to feel your hands, from being cold and wet, (pre frost bite) (it can happen in 45-50 F degree weather) and try opening a thumb stud, a thumb hole, and a flipper. Manual and spring assist. I think with numb hands from the cold, I think a flipper would be the easiest to open.

For EDC I prefer my knife to utilize the Emerson wave feature, a Karambit finger ring is also a plus. When I'm at home, I don't have a preference how the knife opens except for a few exceptions. I haven't found an OTF I like yet and generally I don't like butterfly's or switch blade types. Nothing really weird, but most everything else is fair game, flippers, spring assisted, praetorian style, etc.
@JimSkeltonKnives11 жыл бұрын
David Mosier sure makes some amazing knives, no doubt about it.

Haha I just came from your vid of the Praetorian that you won! Congrats! But when you said "if the detent isnt right..." and "its a flipper that doesnt flip!" all I could think of was Hinderer lol.
@ccoker9510 жыл бұрын
I'm by no means a knife expert, but I have a pretty good knowledge of physics, especially mechanics. It seems like flippers that are up in front of the pivot (towards the blade) are easier to "rock", while the "push button" type flippers are further back (providing a longer, slower lever). I guess the Silent Soldier flipper is designed that way to make for a proper choil?
@steam1519611 жыл бұрын
Hey I have only just really found you it brings a tear to my eye knowing all these amazing knives you can get in the states and because of the dam laws in Australia I can not get FLIPPERS here. I wont a Brous Division Flipper but dam customs. I live on a farm in Australia so I use knife everyday and recently snapped my edc so I need a new knife. I have the passion for knifes and watches. Thank you for uploading these videos it gives me the opportunity to see thing I might never get to see

Beautiful collection, way out of my price range but I enjoy seeing them. My first flipper was a Kershaw Chive follwed quickly by a CRKT Hammond Cruiser. I like the flipper designs over other methods but I'll buy anything that takes my fancy although at the moment they have to be on the lower end of the price scale. My last flipper is an Enlan EL-01, inexpensive, not cheap, there is a difference, but a tank of a knife that is well designed and put together. Keep on with the videos, great stuff.

Hooray for flippers! I've got a couple coming from mosier that can rival if not best the bodega in terms of flipping
@TheDoonzman10 жыл бұрын
I like flippers a lot more because they just seem to be more intuitive. When I grab my knife, from my pocket, my index always ends up landing right where the flipper is. There is no shifting of the knife to where i can position my thumb onto the stud and then proceed to toss the blade out..IMO flippers are just easier to use. :)

My favorite flipper is my $45.00 Kershaw RAM. There is no other flipper that makes that sound when it opens. Its sounds like a gun being charged. It flys open and the detent is the best I have felt. There is NO drag on the blade because of the HAWK lock system. I wish they made more knives like the RAM.

Steel Ball bearings have a rockwell hardness around 68. These bearings are grinding on titanium (no matter what knife it is). So you have 68 grinding on 45 hardness titanium. Do you think something might get eaten away over time? There is an obvious advantage to ceramic bearings due to them not destroying your titanium handle over time. Bronze washers ftw.
@JimSkeltonKnives9 жыл бұрын
Ceramic bearings are much harder than steel actually. But to answer your question, most makers put a hardened steel race (like a steel washer) into the pocket for the bearings to contact instead of the titanium.
@Sk8conscarey9 жыл бұрын
I wish those washers were in all knives but unfortunately companies like zero tolerance usually do not have this feature. I have seen videos of peoples knives with shavings of titanium coming out of them when they are taken apart from those bearings. Its kind of scary.

what would be the cheapest GOOD flipper to buy for EDC, and when i say cheapest i dont mean cheap garbage, but in the good quality range, what would be the lowest cost one availabe, midtech or custom,
@CreationsbyKris11 жыл бұрын
Yes, nail on head. It's all about skill some have it, some don't. All about form, quality of the flick not quantity. Placing your finger flicker on the nub and Willy nilly jabbing about until something starts to happen, then finish it off with a quick wrist flick & smile. NO... not quality remember the old saying "slow is fast & fast is slow".

Hey Jim (or other viewers). I'm interested in getting a knife, but I've never owned one before. I've been watching your videos for about a week now and you know a lot about knives so I wanted to ask if you could help me. I'd like to get a cheap for every day use and personal protection for under $100, preferably a flipper. I also love the smooth and organic style reminiscent of Stan Wilson's work.
