My personal favorite knife dealer (Canada) is Warriors And Wonders. They put a big red sign beside all the items that are out of stock, and they take paypal!

Even worse, they don't tell you that they're not in stock, process the order, take your money and maybe, if you are lucky, they send you an e-mail to tell you that its not in stock and that they will refund your money. Unfortunately, "Sir", it may take 3-5 days for your CC available credit to be restored. Don't even want the knife anymore after that, the endorphins cease to flow and the adrenaline kicks in because I want reach through the internet and flip off the pricks that can't make a simple link between their web store and current inventory, or they just don't keep the inventory DB updated.

Jim Skelton I live in the netherlands, and having a creditcard is actually pretty rare around these parts. It's not a money-thing, but there are alot more options to pay online and offline here that don't potentially get you into trouble or minor debt, something that the dutch are very cautious of. I've turned 18 a few months ago, and i've been a hard-core (i knew how to save up my cash) knife enthousiast since i was about 10. I have to this day never been able to shop out of America, and the knife market here is ALOT smaller (brick and mortar-wise you've got your bucks, mora's and opinels, with sometimes a CRKT or two, online stores usually stock about 25 brands at the ultimate max, 5 to 10 of which i'm interested in.) My parents don't have a credit card, and i'm looking into getting one via my bank, but i've had pay-pal since i was 14 i believe, so it would be so much more convinient that way... If only BladeHQ, New Graham Knives and Cabela's (i like some of the exclusive hunters there) were paypal-friendly..

The exact same thing happens with guitar retailers. It infuriates me. I went through buying a guitar one time and got the notification for the purchase,...and 10 minutes late I get a text that says, .."restock date approximately Aug 18th of 2022". And its July 2021. I was so furious I went to every guitar forum known to man and outted that company in the nastiest way possible. I'm talking HOT!!!

I used to work at BL Farrier Supplies in the UK. It's a wonderful family run business with one boss and one employee. We could obtain within one day every imaginable permutation of horse-shoe, farriers tool, forge, protective clothing etc. However, because there was only two of us working there it was an almost impossible task to keep the website up to date. Unforgivable for large corporations like Benchmade and Spyderco but please, give the little guys a break. They try their best.

Just in case you do not know or it has not already been explained.... [a] most web etailers use one of several online retail systems... whether it's amazon, shopify, google etc... [b] search engines want you to find what you are looking for so that they get paid for clicks [c] retailers do not really care if they do not have what you want. they want to bait and switch you to something else. [d] depending on whether you paid for adwords or search engine crawling your site the search company may not be able to remove out of stock items, even temporarily. My favorite system to hate is ATG. Don't get me started on that one.

Hahaha awesome video man! I agree with you on many talking points. I also do the same thing with secret play money. Important stuff is paid first obviously (mortgage, car, food, etc) but after that the wife doesn’t need to know I spent 2k+ on a man toy. My wife would be cool about it, but its not worth the conversation to try and justify it to her, haha cuz then she will want the equivalent in shoes/purses/clothing. Just curious though has your wife ever stumbled upon this video.... : )

I want to add that I think Kershaw is the best manufacturer of quality, low budget knives. Not to degrade Spiderco, they make quality products as well. I've never owned one. I recently bought a Kershaw Shuffle, for $14, but even still I can tell that the same craftmanship was used to create this little knife just by how solid the feel of its mechanisms are. Again, thank you for your educating videos👍

There's a really bad dealer in Australia that shows EVERYTHING is in stock. In their T&C's it says "Available - this means the item is either on the shelf or needs to be ordered in which usually takes around 7-14 days." So they will take your money then tell you it's not in stock - LOL

No pay pal, I will not buy. Customer protection as well as sellers is key when I’m spending more than $100. And you are so right about what amounts to a bait and switch when it comes to “item not in stock”. It drives me nuts to think “yes, I found it” then after all the preamble realize that the item is not available. Like you say, just put it in a separate section to show you had it and can get it. But keep the ones in stock “up front” Great rant 👍👍

In addition to the convenience of paypal, there is also a security issue with not using it. I am a (cyber) Security Engineer working who works for a large healthcare company, and I know the risks of just giving any random website your credit card information. Personally, I will give my credit card out to NOBODY except amazon and paypal, because they are the only two sources whom I trust sufficiently. That's not to say other sites are fraudulent, I'm sure that's not the case. But the degree of security infrastructure you need to have in place to keep financial information secure these days (if it's even possible), both in transit and stored; requires a very high level of technical infrastructure. So much so that nobody can except any non tech-based business to implement it, and I know plenty of people (my father for one) who have gotten their card info stolen by using an insecure source (in his case, it was a smaller auto-parts website).

I don't have to put in my CC information, you can easily attach a card to your paypal account so it takes the money out. Or as Jim mentioned you can put money into the account itself, either way. Nice Vid Jim and I totally agree regarding the inventory part. I've written to some knives' dealers complaining about this fact and they answered it's a kind of marketing thing. In fact, it's bad marketing because like you say we are disappointed and frustrated and it would be so easy to be clear about the archives part and the in stock part.

I think that's a huge appeal to high end knife collecting is knowing that even though you have the money to buy a knife that you want, if it's not available for sale then you're SOL. But when you finally come across it, it's the best feeling ever. It's just a part of the game. I have been trying to hunt down an earlier Hoback Kwaiback for a while now but it's impossible to find. Someday.... Btw love your videos.... keep up the good work!

Jim did you see that plethora of Kirby Lamberts that went up on a certain northern knife dealer's site? I was so happy that I was finally going to have a Lambert in my collection. Then I clicked on one and the tiny little (out of stock) flashed at me and my heart sank.... I feel your pain Jim, dealers need to do a better job telling us what is out of stock up front. They shouldn't get our hopes up like they do.

Hey. Loved your rant. Maybe a little wordy( but I guess that's why they call it a rant - so never mind) but loved it none the less. Yup - I have run into that situation far more times than I can count. Anyway - Thanks. hope they're listening too. However, I have a little quip of my own. And as you wish all the knife companies would listent to your rant - I would love it if all KZbin videographers would read this as well. First - please know that I mean this in the nicest - most positive feedback-y - Constructive critisism-y and kindest way possible. It seems that an odd thing happens to those venturing into the informational or instructional KZbin video world: They come to believe that every little thing that crosses their minds while the camera is on and running... is interesting. I get it. Years ago when it all first became possible I turned on my phone - looked intot he sense - and began narrating the world around me. And you know what..? It felt great! It was so fun! And embarrassingly enough I felt a sense of importance. I said what I wanted - no one was telling me to do this or do that - and I had a captive audience. (of course the audience was onlky me - but it felt like others were watching. I said goofy things. I made stupid jokes. I paused. I cleared my throat. I sniffed. I coughed. All the time with this feeling that I just KNEW that what ever I was saying or doing or thinking... was interesting. Because I FELT interesting doing it. And then I watched them back... Oops... Just another guy making another lame video feeling important casue the camera was facing him. Dont get me wrong. I thought they were great. I thought I was fascinating. And I thought the "reality" of the pauses - and the sniffs - and the throat clearings - were AWESOME! My pauses were great. It was really interesting to watch myself thinking between sentences. And I just LOVED the parts where I would start to say something and then - just like real people - I would stop - and say something completely unrelated. HEAVEN! No infomercial here pal - Just a "real" guy talking about something interesting. EXCELLENT!!! or not. Here's the thing: When I watch these videos I forgive everything single thing I just said. Cause I get it. and I know how it feels. And I think that's great. It's a really fun feeling. And anytime any of us get a chance to feel "fun" - I'm all for it. And because whoever I happen to be watching at the moment has information that I don't have about something I'm really interested in and I want to learn about. However: Please, please, please... NO one wants to sit and listen to someone else's unconscious bodily functions. The sniffing - coughing - the mucus filled throat clearing - the mucus swallowing - the dramatic pause... and then the lip smacking as they begin their next clearly thought out - cause we just listened to them think for 10 seconds - sentence. So please... and I truly do know how fascinating you (people) feel - and it IS great to feel fascinating, but please try to be more aware of all of those "real" things that "real people" do. Because what you (people) are saying really is interesting - all by themselves. OK. Be good. And thanks again for your rant and all of the knowledge you give to us.

I agree with you on the "items not in stock" bit, however, sometimes they are only temporarily out of stock. I have seen this many times with knife sites that sell their products quickly. I'd like to know that they carry the item and intend to restock it. However, I get angry when they have no intention of ordering a new set of those knives (or lights in my case last week.)

Production knives have their place, and I appreciate them for what they are, but there is a world of difference when you get to midtechs and customs that command these higher prices. Proper heat treating that production facilities don't normally do, and proper grinding that prevents overheating the edge allow for significantly longer edge retention for one detail, all of the hand work time is another reason. Hand tuning of the detent is yet another. The list literally goes on and on

I feel the same way. Its annoying, but godda get though the crowed to get to the spot I guess. It would be just easier to have them put a tab for in stock or archive the sold ones. One thing that I hate about buying knives is the shipping. Everyone out of US will know what I mean. When I go to buy a cheap knife like a Kershaw Skyline on Bladehq and its $41. I wish they would show the price with shipping because most the time it comes out to be like $70 minimum. Canadians and everyone not US get screwed over big time for shipping.

I'm more concerned about dealers shipping production knives with obvious QC issues, after I note "please inspect for fit/finish". Paypal sucks balls. Their buyer protection is a sham, they charge sellers more than credit cards, they are anti-2nd amendment... not to mention their other arbitrary restrictions. I'm more likely to buy from sellers that get it and don't support PP. The "hide it from wifey" thing will blow up in your face when she finally sees the account..."honey, can I use your PP account?" I can use a CC, get 1-3% credit back, and the seller is still charged less than PP, keeping prices down :)

I know this is an older video and has partially been address in a comment but nothing has changed and it isn't the dealers choice. Search "knives" in PayPals' Acceptable Use Policy: www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/ua/acceptableuse-full How can some dealers still accept it? Because they are not in compliance with PayPals' Acceptable Use Policy. Sounds like someone I'd rather NOT do business with. As to why keep the listings when sold? Just like any other business optimizing their search engine results, it brings in customers. The more pages and key words moves your result(s) to the top of the list. Can be frustrating for some, certainly but others are window shopping and might find something they weren't looking for because of it.

Cosmicjello It sounds like paypal is talking more about buying knives that are illegal, such as automatics in some states. Im sure as long as you're buying a knife that you legally can you are fine to do so. But then again it could just be left up to interpretation.

The only dealers I trust for customs are Ebosshoss and True North Knives! Jon and Neil are both huge on the USN and take care of the members. If I was trying to buy a knife I dont buy anywhere other than the Cove. I dont deal with dealers unless they have something absolutely exclusive. Dealers and even some knifemakers do not like the fees that paypal takes out! The solution: apply for the Paypal mastercard! I use it all the time. Just the same.

You think them keeping the knife on the website but have it out of stock is bad you need to go check out hero outdoors. They keep everything as in stock even though they don't have anything in stock and have to order them in before they send them to you and that's if you're lucky. My girlfriend bought a left handed sabenza 31 from them and that was 8 months ago they still haven't shipped it. We even went to the store demanding they either give a refund or give her the knife and they told us they had no record of her purchase even though we came with bank statement proof and proof of purchase on her account on the website.

If you've set the product to "out of stock" in one part of the website, you can do it in other parts. You don't need to be a professional web developer either.

Yet on your knife website you do the same thing; you can't buy you have to preorder (even though they are listed as "available knives") and there's no order button, you have to email you. You do exactly what you're ranting on about now. And no PayPal.

Matt Ashe Ummmmm, I’m not a knife dealer. So there is zero comparison. My website is nothing more than a billboard for my work. It has no shopping cart and cannot accept payments. Like 99% of all custom knifemakers who have a website, it’s there to direct the customer to contact me directly to discuss options. I know you felt proud because you thought you “really got me” there, but it’s not the same thing. This video is about knife retailers. And they have thousands of customers. Very big difference.

You're saying something as crazy as "a Bentley shouldn't cost more than a Taurus". Yes they do the same basic thing, but one is handcrafted with the finest materials and the other is a basic assembled machine. And expecting to pay for a finished product what the material cost is? Silly. That $18 pizza you ordered cost $3 to make. The $500 eyeglass lenses you have cost (no lie) .90 cents to make. Labor & overhead account for a lot, and there are countless other things I don't have time to type

Lol you crack me up. I feel the same way. The solution to the PayPal problem is to get their debit mastercard. NOT a credit card. Gives you access to your paypal funds to use on sites that don't take paypal. It's free and fixed this problem for me.

This is a great video. Do you know how often it is that you go to a knife makers site and they show one picture of the knife and that is all you get ! That is a farce. Is the knife in stock ? How long is the blade and the overall length ? How much does it weigh? What does the other side of the knife look like ? What does the pocket clip look like and is it tip up or tip down carry ? What is the handle made of ? What is the waiting time and do you have a waiting list and how do I get on it ? etc. etc. It is a complete joke. It is if the knife makers expect us buyers to be able to read their minds. They show all kinds of knives that they made years ago and are not available. It is too hard to buy from them and find out information about their knives. They make it difficult for us buyers. They could have even more business if they would correct the above problems.

According paypal it is actually not the dealers fault. Within Paypal's policy, you are limited to certain products that you can sell. Knifeworks has it explained why they can't use paypal anymore.

I like the channel. I like the videos. Watched this rant and it turned my stomach. It hurts to see someone ranting about things that have so little understanding what he's ranting on about. I get the rant has a lot of humor and it isn't as serious as it sounds, but it sounds like there is a lot of frustration bleeding through. Lets reference PayPal first. The dealers you're upset that don't accept PayPal might be dealers that don't have the clout to get the margins they need to actually have PayPal and the fees it charges. Next, moving on to item stock levels, what you're asking is a LOT more involved than what you're asking for. The website has to either be built for the ability to turn listings on and off based on stock quantities, but that requires back end infrastructure designed with this in mind that keep watch on live status of stock levels. This isn't a practical solution to inventory that may cycle in and out of stock. They want to show they have the item because removing it hurts the site's exposure and ability to sell it even if they do have it in stock. There are a lot of moving parts involved with listing products for sale. Displaying a listing or not isn't such a bad thing when the stock levels displayed are accurate. It is far worse for the retailer to not display something and lose out on searches and traffic than it is to slightly inconvenience a handful of customers. It just isn't practical or economical to do what you're asking. It really isn't worth the business's efforts to handle it that way. Next, Google. Google will cache searches and information that sites have no control over. So Google can display a link that says "In stock!" for an item that's been discontinued for over 3 years and the dealer has nothing to do with it.

Firstly, this is an OLD video, things change. Based on the suggestions from comments on this ️BID, I just got a paypal debit MasterCard (I didn't know it existed back then) and that eliminated the issue of retailers not accepting PayPal. It just runs like any regular credit card. Secondly, it's seriously not hard to remove an item listing especially when what we are talking about are custom knives that a retailer will only have ONE unit of. Instead of it changing the listing to "sold" when it sells, it can easily be removed. Even manually, it's one knife. Custom knife dealers in general are small operations with fewer than 100 units.

OMG!!!! YESSS!! I know this is an older vid but Ive wanted to reach through the screen and fucking throat punch somebody over the sheer aggravation of reading the three dreaded words, " Not in stock"! Nail on the head sir. Its a constant to this day. All i want is a Tashi Bharucha, it's not too much to ask for is it?! I have to laugh when i end up on a site and they literally have zero in stock....like nothing! Whats the point of even having your site up?!?! Man I'm getting worked up! Okay breath, relax...think I'll hit up a couple sites and go on my hunt again. Who knows maybe I'll get lucky?? Or maybe I'll just spike my smart phone off the ground as soon as those three words grace my screen hahaha!! Thanks Jim!! For giving our frustration a resounding voice! Happy hunting
