Jason, smooth landings and a perfectly timed flare are some of the hardest things for new pilots to get down, and things are harder when you know you'll be watched and criticized. You did good, and every time you fail you're learning to do better. You stayed positive and calm, that's how I know you'll be a good pilot. I hope we get to see you fly more. Good luck on that pilots license.

Flew 350 hrs in sonex Waiex, many hrs in tail wheel ultralights… 13 months w/o flying. Then bought Kolb Flightstar 2. First trip to strip, 3 of 6 crappy landings…. What had I forgot? Second trip, first 3 were crap. Then I remembered what a really high time pilot told me long ago. “Look way down the runway, not in front of you. Next 4 we’re greasers…. Always learning. Explain the wind during taxi and have him look at the flight controls to understand the why. It's tough to learn from the back seat without reference to instruments. Especially when just starting out he doesn't have a real what it looks like when everything is correct and how that feels in the seat when the picture is correct. When he's getting it right have him remember something about that moment and eventually all those moments gel together for a better understanding and repeatable skill. Anyway be careful a competent CFI is a cheap investment. I have taught many and learned a bunch from lots of folks as well. Coordinated flight always....stay far away from stall/spin scenarios. "Stick &Rudder" a great book that's still relevant even in the modern airplane. CFI

In my small opinion, the best airplanes to learn to fly in are conventional gear airplanes (taildraggers). Much better way to teach stick & rudder, and also a great reminder that the airplanes not done flying until your stopped and the engines shut down. I learned in a J3 cub, then on to a Cessna 180. Love them both. Jason’s doing good in that wind, mean Jonas, lol.

When I was learning to fly, I had a problem with my landings and couldn’t understand why I occasionally porpoised down the runway. I just needed to learn that I shouldn’t give back (push slightly forward) the yoke. It’s a matter of mind over matter and feel of the planes speed at touchdown. Jason will get it. He’s doing great! I own a Rans S-7S, same paint scheme as Jason's, just no bush gear :( Anyways, I've flown it a few times from the back seat, and it's WAY more difficult due to visibility. That being said, if he can nail it from the back, he should have no problems from the front seat.
@timothymix77582 жыл бұрын
You control speed with pitch and altitude with throttle! You use the rudder to stay coordinated! Step on the ball! You need to slow that thing down on short final and let it settle down, maintaining directional control with the rudder. It should feel like your first dance on prom night! (Shuffling your feet) if you don't keep up on rudder input and speed control your either going to ground loop it or stall/spin in on final.

Nice job! What finally made sense to me regarding the flare was that it was just to slow down the rate of descent, rather than a 'flare' - somehow that translated better into my head and reduced the incidences of flaring way too much. If the flare is done right, everything after that happens that little bit slower and therefore easier.

This was great, Jonas! Nice job creating another pilot! I don't think I really understood what "coordinated" meant until now. I was learning right along with Jason. Nice work Jason, BTW!! You guys are lucky to live in such an open, beautiful place! What a great place to fly! I always wanted a slow-flying, fat-tire'ed fixed-wing, but it's impractical for me where I live (Unless I hit the lottery tomorrow, lol). For now the paramotor scratches the itch. Some day I'd love to get a Mosquito or Rotorway heli. Perfect for the tight spaces and lack of runway length around here. You sold me on that S7 though! Looks like a blast!

I feel like he's going to be seeing not only problems with the FAA pulling his license but possible charges and fines from the FBI down to the EPA on the Federal side but also charges from similar state of California agencies. He made any of the mildly "sketchy" things you've done in planes look like nothing. You never put anyone else in danger like he did.

I was the same - fine on take-off and the circuit until final approach. Went to pieces every time! After 5.5hrs circuits over three sessions, and another landing she had to rescue, she told me to stop, and she got out. "Where're you going?" I asked. "For a cup of tea. Go and land the plane yourself". It worked. I had the choice of land or crash!
