I can understand why you are upset that Goku ended up with Chi Chi and not Suno... but let's be real here. Chi Chi was the one who proposed to Goku and not Suno. Who didn't show any interest in marrying Goku. And Goku did agree to it even if he didn't understand what she meant at the time. And so when Goku remembers Chi Chi and the promise they made he upholds to his promise without any disagreement or opposition, which shows why Goku is a person pure of heart.

I always find it amazing how you always notice when a line of dialogue is weird, or that it doesn't match the character who says it. When I was a child, I watched Dragon Ball in Brazilian Portuguese, and there were few censorships or changes from the original, so many dialogues seem strange to me in the English version, and your reactions prove that I'm not wrong. First, in the flashback of the flight on the Nimbus (and in the original scene), Chi-Chi started to think of Goku as someone to marry because he touched her in a certain place. In her purity (and in a classic Japanese joke) she believes that she could not marry anyone other than the one who was so intimate with her. And with that thought she started to like him. This adaptation kind of made her love seem superficial... In the part of the marriage proposal, when Goku said that he thought marriage was something to eat, Chi-Chi was heartbroken, but she understood that he had no romantic thoughts when he agreed to marry her in the past. But before she could say anything, Goku simply said, "Well, I really did make you that promise! Will you marry me?" It turns out that he doesn't break the promises he makes. In my opinion, even though he doesn't understand relationships between people, he's not against the idea of ​​having a family. In fact, I think that ever since his grandfather died, he's been feeling a bit lonely. Chi-Chi will definitely make him lots of delicious food to eat.

I mean, Goku did remember Chichi, he just didn't recognize her because she had grown up and clearly wasn't the little girl he remembered. Anyway, maybe it's just me but it was really ironic when Suzy said "They're like a married couple." when they were fighting. I don't think what Goku said here makes sense either. I don't know what exactly Goku says when he agrees to marry Chichi in the original version, but in the Spanish version, he says "it doesn't matter, because I promised you" basically he does it because he noticed that she was excited about that and Goku didn't want to be mean to her. It may have been unfair the way things turned out for Goku but the reality is that Chichi was the perfect wife for him. I love Goku but I can't imagine any other character going through what she had to. He needed someone with such a strong character. I think in his own way Goku was really attracted to her because Chichi is a fighter like him, who realistically is the only woman who has fought him with the power he has now and she is not afraid of that, on the contrary she liked it. So I think that is where they clicked.

The reason why Goku agreed to the marriage was simply because "I always keep my promises." In the Japanese manga, it says "Kekkon sukka" and "marriage" is written in katakana as "kekkon" instead of kanji. "sukka" is a very casual and matter-of-fact way of saying "let's do it." We can tell he has just learned the meaning of marriage and is saying it lightly with a monotonous pronunciation. It's funny to see how Goku seems to have no interest in anything other than fighting and eating. The English version has a more serious tone to it, which is a bit disappointing as it loses the light-hearted and fun feel.

In this english version the answer from Goku to ChiChi sounded EXTREMELY weird. In the latin-american version it is WAY more noble and fair, he doesn't say "my heart does" he says "I don't know about marriage, but made you a promise and I will keep my word". It's WAY better (and something Goku would actually say), in Goku's perspective it would not be fair for ChiChi to suffer just because Goku spoke without thinking or knowing (which was dumb, and he acknowledges it). In the latinamerican version it was a very manly thing of him to agree to marriage despite that.

It really isn’t that hard to understand why Goku (and nobody else for that matter) didn’t recognize Chichi, disregarding her one-time appearance in the manga. 1) Even Goku grew up drastically in three years (grew much taller, voice became deeper, he became more mature), to the point none of his friends recognized him. Chichi is simply the same. 2) Chichi used to wear skimpy armor and a helmet, and didn’t have an angry temper. Now she dresses modestly in traditional Chinese dresses, stated to have become noticeably beautiful, and is, well, very angry. It’s a drastic difference, she completely changed her image. 3) it’s anime. Trying to apply the logic, “people don’t change much in three years” is silly lol. Characters in anime don’t recognize people over the simplest things. Even in DB, no one recognized Jackie Chun from Roshi, not even Crane who has known Roshi the longest, and Yamcha got fooled by Nam dressing as Roshi, despite Nam being a completely different race. Not to mention, in anime, it’s very obvious for the viewer to know who the character is, but it isn’t actually as easy in real life.

I just realized something. The reason Picollo has so much respect for Krillin later in the series is because of this fight. When at the height of his arrogance Krillin is the first fight he has where he actually has to use his real power. For the rest of the series Picollo always treats Krillin like a capable warrior and never underestimates him again.

His name is Piccolo, "Ma Jr." is just an alias, the meaning of which is lost in translation. As I understand it King Piccolo was "Daimao" (Great Demon King) Piccolo in the original Japanese. "Ma" is demon in Japanese, and Junior is just borrowed word which means same as it does in western languages. So Piccolo is actually calling himself "Son of the Demon" to hint at who he is without saying it.

In the original Goku simply says something like "but well I did make you a promised so I want to get married?" in a dumb-goku way not in a corny way like this dub. You're going to have a lot of misunderstandings if you keep watching dub even if you prefer it.

Akira was new at incorporating romance, and we can see it in Chi Chi's odd character direction which felt out of place for a moment. He was better at writing comedy and adventure and I think he was wondering how to bring them together as fast as possible. 原作では、悟空はチチと1回しか会ってないので、すぐに思い出せなくても仕方が無いんですよね。 女の子を品定めする事に長けているウーロンだけが気付いているのが、面白い。 悟空とチチの突然の結婚に、ここまで嫌悪する人は初めて見ました！ チチをサイコパス扱いする理由も全く分かりません。 チチは初めて会った時から悟空を意識し続けてきましたし、最初にプロポーズをしたのも彼女からでした。 悟空は食べ物と勘違いしていましたが、困ったのは名前も知らない人と一緒に暮らさないといけない事ぐらいで、約束は約束だとサッパリした性格なところもあって、すんなり結婚。 最高に笑顔になれるシーンだと思うが、世の中には色んな見方があるもんだなと思った。 チチが名を明かした時、クリリンも驚いていますが彼はチチの事を知らないのでアニメのミス(原作ではクリリンの驚く様子はありません)。 チチをこれだけ嫌う人も珍しい⋯幼少時も特別変わった子じゃなかったし、大人になったチチも約束を忘れられてるから怒ってただけだし⋯。 どれだけチチに嫌悪しているかは、今回のエピソードでそのサムネイルを使う？！というところから伝わります。 原作では皆に結婚の挨拶をする様なシーンも無く、クリリンへの忠告もチチが腕を組んでる間にしています。 最後に、悟空のプロポーズについて最も奇妙で悟空らしくないという反応は的を射ています。 何故なら、海外版では余計な台詞に変えられており、オリジナル版では「じゃ、結婚すっか」と、悟空らしさ全開の軽い感じがあって、面白さと微笑ましさを感じられるポイントだった。 もっと言えば、これまでもオリジナルとは違う言葉に変えられている箇所は多く、日本のファンからすると、悟空の言葉ではない⋯とか、奇妙に感じる箇所だらけではあるんですよね。

Goku has no romantic feelings, so if he hadn't done this, he wouldn't have even gotten married. The author would prefer to avoid depictions of romance as much as possible, but he was forced to do so after being asked by those around him. I don't think he could get married unless there was a setting where he made a promise because he wasn't interested in marriage.

I mean I'm not even a fan of chichi but I actually feel like a lot of the hate was unwarranted. Don't get me wrong she could be really annoying, especially when you get to DBZ, but I think it's understandable for the most part. Nowadays I actually find myself empathizing with her situation and I don't really look at her the same way that I used to. Strictly in terms of Dragon Ball though, I definitely don't think she was built up enough as a love interest to Goku. It's fine since that was never the focus of Dragon Ball in the first place but I can understand where people who are into that sort of thing come from.

Goku and ChiChi are 18 years old. Krillin is 19, Bulma is at least 22, Yamcha is probably about 24. The only reason that the shy of girls Yamcha could sweet talk ChiChi in the first place was because she was just a little girl at the time. Which doesn't speak well of his early self no matter how one looks at it! ChiChi didn't forget him either! First declaration of love and all that! Piccolo is known as the guy who tried to take over (and destroy) the world. So his son is going by 'Junior' so as to attend the tournament. ChiChi? It makes more sense in the manga where Goku never met ChiChi again until now. It's been seven years (in the manga). Obviously she has grown quite a bit. The Ox King became--sort of a warlord petty king. If one looks at it that way, then ChiChi is sort of mafia princess? Well aware of aspects of proper, upper class behavior and sacrifices, but also prone to harshness and violence. In any case, the Ox King made an offer to marry ChiChi to Goku, ChiChi followed it up and Goku accepted it without understanding what he'd agreed to. So they had a marriage contract. That's double the reason why ChiChi might be angry that Goku didn't recognize her. Doubtlessly she was wondering why or if Goku was planning on showing ujp, and why she's making an appearance now at the tournament. She was under a lot of uncertainty and stress and was hoping to see Goku at the tournament. She was probably afraid of a 'No', but that he didn't even recognize her infuriated her. Did Goku really want to marry her? No. In the manga, he didn't say the 'heart line'. He sort of thought that if he'd promised to do it, he had to do it, and then agreed to marry her. 'Should he have?' Probably not. Especially as he didn't know what he was promising, it wouldn't have been a valid contract, even if one ignores that both he and ChiChi were 11 years old at the time. Just as importantly, he barely knows her and doesn't love her. But ChiChi CAN ride the nimbus! Neither of Goku's oldest, best friends of Bulma and Krillin can do that! I don't know if the Nimbus can be a good marriage meter. but it does represent something Goku can 'hang a hat on'. ChiChi might have outgrown the bladed helmet of death. In any event, she wouldn't have been permitted to use the helmet at the tournament as it's clearly bladed and a deadly device. Does Goku have a problem with remembering? Well, given the number of times he uses his head as a weapon, or he's been conked on the head.... Or the time on the mountain when the lightning crown electrocuted him? He's never been the sharpest tool in the shed as it's been! But no, he does clearly remember ChiChi in both the manga and the anime, he just didn't recognize her. Krillin has been busy in these three years! As you can see, he can do guided ki energy attacks that are not the Kamehameha wave, and he can levitate. Just as importantly, he can do various combos with which he got Piccolo's back and struck him. Even when Piccolo got him back, Krillin could recover and stay in bounds. Krillin has a wily nature and it's paying dividends in a fight! Not even Piccolo Jr. can just walk over him.

Toriyama didn't feel comfortable writing romantic relationships bit I think he really could have done more of it. What's shown as OG DB wraps up here is better relationship writing than I see in many other franchises. Regardless, she is the true fit for Goku even with the comedic elements being a bit of a thorn later on.

Chi Chi, Bulma, and Launch are all crazy. But for some reason, people only judge Chi Chi. Like, Chi Chi was the only one who was a sweetie at one point and then became angry. All three of them are unreasonable at times, but only Chi Chi gets flack. What's that about? Gag Mangaka first and foremost. When Bulma is angry/violent over something dumb, people love it. When Chi Chi is angry/violent about anything, people get weird. I really don't understand. Especially people who like to say Chi Chi is tricked Goku when 1) She's a naive kid who grew up in the mountains just like Goku and 2) Ox King made the arrangement from the start.

I know, you shipped Goku and Snow. But if you think about it, all of Goku’s best friends have strong wills. Bulma hit him with a car and shot him the first day they met, and they are besties. Yamcha fought him and tried to rob them multiple times. Roshi worked him to death. Krillin took advantage of Goku’s stupidity, and constantly rivaled his abilities. Snow was a sweet girl, and absolutely wifey material for Goku. But Goku will always choose the challenge over the peace. So Chi Chi fits what Goku likes, and isn’t that what’s important?

Just saw your reaction to this episode. It was obvious that “Anonymous” was “Chi Chi”, and Goku was brainless to realize that until she said her name at the end of the match. Sometimes I wonder, “how was it that only we “the viewers” and Oolong recognized her and no one else???” And I agree with you (without saying too much) why would Goku take the plunge with Chi Chi??? in brazilian-portuguese that is pretty close the original Goku said that he do not break his promises and then he ask Chi Chi to marry him . he does not love her . besides Bulma that he loves as a big sister he never showed that he loved any woman . he just is keeping his promise to marry Chi Chi . he said he would so he is doing . i think that is kind of forced too . he thought that marriage was about getting food . not about to keep the rest of his life with the same person . but it his life , anyway . if he want to keep his promise who am i to say to Goku to not keep his promise . i wouldn't . but well . that is me .

The part where Goku says I know what my heart says, I always assumed he meant that since he said he would marry her that he should own up to that rather than deny it. It was about honor, not about love. Now on another note, I'm pretty sure Chi-Chi is a masochist. She was very upset until Goku actually pushed her out of the ring and into a wall, and then she calmed down and started speaking politely to Goku. There are definitely some things that happen in the future that suggest this to be true.
