Slug Bait was the answer and going forward I'm definitely using it in the future, it's just not worth it not to now.
Lachies back to re-drill, I try broadcasting some annual where its been hit the worst & I've pulled Mike the builders drill out from the shed to give one more go at under sowing some pasture...I really hope it half works

Great video Andrew. Pulling a flat roller over the paddocks that have been drilled will help with soil and seed contact and consolidation will help reduce the slug activity 👍

Thanks for the video and good luck with beating the slugs. They are such a difficult problem and are so unpredictable. Why would you spend $50-100k on the right drill? You could go cheaper but then you get yesterdays technology. That money would go a long way to the milking shed extension which is where you make your money. The drill is going to sit in the shed for 11 months and even though your contractor can't always come exactly when you want, you get access to the best technology and drivers who do the job for a living.

An older duncan ( model 734)drill could be ideal. Aitchison do a reasonable drill too. Your results would be much improved if you dragged some chain harrows behind the drill and even better if there was a roller attached too. Basically, the harrows would run under the roller drawbar. The seed needs good soil contact to grow and a firm seed bed is best. If you haven't disturbed the ground enough to see dirt brought up, you haven't done the job. Don't worry about the visible dirt as it will disappear after the first rain. This comes from my experience, which goes back to the 80s using Duncan drills, through to the 2000s using an Aitchison and then a John Deere 750A. This is many thousands of hectares in total.

Use a mask and gloves with treated seed. It's not direct drillin, you have a slug problem. Slugs like damp so I'm thinking maise is a great habbitate for them. Also slug bait doesn't like rain. Cultivation doesn't change the aforementioned factors in my experience

In Aus, converting the old Duncan tyne drills to double discs.see ytube vid "RYAN NT Retrofit Discs on a Duncan Drill - Testimonial from a WA farmer". Like the AB breeding, give one or more of other seed companies a go, Wesco, Vernado etc, they have a different? seed treatment and multi species so something might come up. Might hold off on a seeder that is Aitchison/ Reese Engineering as receivers are involved (March, 2024). Some favour liquid fert into a seed furrow see basic kiwi system, used boat bilge pumps etc. youtube vide "Home built in furrow, seed drill, liquid injection system".

Hi Andrew another great video I would still have rolled the paddock even had the roller behind the drill to do both in one pass . When it comes to emptying out left over seed a old vacuum cleaner is great saves wasting seed and can hand cast it on area's. Have a look at taege engineering canterbury they do different drills

Great video. Why don't u spray the field with round up after u drilled it so the weeds and old grass don't smother your new seeds out? Also we put a bit of fert and calci prills on 2 help with germination and establishment

mohaka will get up and away mate. She's a winner, theres an even better hybrid coming through as well. Connor she is a ripper, first seeding done with one and a cupla tires behind it.

So frustrating to see all that damage. Could you mulch the maize stubble to give the slugs less cover?
