When I was younger, we split firewood by hand. Our price was $30 a cord, $35 delivered. We did have a large saw attached to a 1937 Chevy flathead rear axle to cut rounds.

Not sure if you have explored this already- but your local/regional campgrounds would be another great outlet for the smaller split “boutique” firewood. We travel as much as possible with our camper, and high quality firewood is always a priority. Since regulations usually won’t allow us to legally haul our own (and also have to consider weight and payload in the truck when towing) we always buy our wood at or near the campground. Would love to be able to purchase higher quality, dry hardwood, in species specific for cooking. We always travel with a solostove and love to cook on it, but most campgrounds only have low quality softwoods not great for cooking. Campers are captive buyers while at the campground, and most would be willing to pay more for a higher quality firewood.

That’s my current thought and the way forward for me. Awesome channel Brad.

Good morning Morgan's, looks like you're pretty well covered in the blower department. Blowers don't detach the lawn. A Toro 4800 lawn sweeper vacuum or a Smithco 48 or60 ride on sweeper. Dump the leaves on the burn pit. Your lawn would grow much thicker and healthier. Nice job on the driveway. Matt at Diesel Creek mite be able to hook you up with a roller.

Here the only firewood available is Ponderosa Pine. If you drive 60 or 70 miles you can get hardwood, but I've not seen the quality of it. When We moved here 9 years ago a cord of split firewood was $100. Two years ago it was $220. We've cut our own for the last couple of years but I see it advertised for $250 a cord. I'd gladly take a cord of Oak for $300. I do have around 1/2 cord of mixed hardwood, oak and ash. I use it on cold days because I can sustain a fire or at least have hot coals in the morning if my last fire is hardwood. We burn in a KozyHeat fireplace. It's supposedly around 75% efficient. but as I approach my 75th birthday I am planning on changing over to a gas fireplace. I ran a gas line to the fireplace prior to finishing the ceiling below.

Mike, I am totally with you on your concept of the firewood sales strategy. I don't think I'll ever do bulk delivery again. I get $635 per cord of wood selling bundles. And I never have to leave my property... all from a self-serve stand at the end of the driveway.
@njonebale7889
@njonebale7889 Ай бұрын
That’s a good profit on a cord of firewood…..problem with that is ….how long did it take to sell that cord of firewood bundles to make that 635 bucks…I sell just cords of firewood and I can deliver 3 cords by noon on a Saturday and make 750 bucks….your making more money with less product but if you break it down your not making much at all per day….bulk firewood makes the most profit quicker….this time a year I’m delivering anywhere from 5-15 cords a week…and that’ll be the average for the next three months….selling less product means making less money!
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c Ай бұрын
@@njonebale7889 Do you change your prices depending on the season? The guy I get my firewood from charges less if you order early in the spring, and around September he bumps the price up as winter approaches. I understand why he does, but is that a common practice in the firewood business?
@njonebale7889
@njonebale7889 Ай бұрын
@@wildbill23c I changed my price three times in the dozen years I’ve been making firewood, 200/ cord…then to 220/ cord and now it’s up to 250/ cord from three years ago when fuel and inflation increased from you know who…but I deliver whole 14’ dump trailer loads that are well over a cord and everyone knows it so they always repeat…while the mason dump guys are charging more for less…I believe that extra quarter cord made the business…I sell many many loads a year…volume is the key.

back when as a college student I sold firewood part-time for 3 yrs. When I had lots of raw product more than I could process & sell as finished product, spring thru mid summer I sold lots of 6' length logs by the pickup truck load to those who wanted to save $ and able to further process it. I touched the wood twice with the Wood making me almost all of the $$. As winter neared and through out it, I only sold finished product firewood cut, split, delivered, and often stacked at a premium where all my handling along with some scarcity made a lot of $$$ per truck load. It worked very well to maximize >> ROI

@Greenline-mr2kk 29 күн бұрын
@@njonebale7889 You are totally missing his point. He is saying that he never has to leave his property, and he is getting 635/cord. It does not matter over what time he is selling. If you understood business, it is about $/units. In all likelihood, he can be working his day job (assuming he is still employed), making X/hour while people are putting $$$ in his firewood stand box. Meanwhile, you are driving around, burning through fuel and time all to make the delivery.

Good morning Morgans. That land plane is one slick attachment, does an awesome job. You are absolutely right, if you could hit that with a compactor to tighten it up and would complete the job and last longer. With all the equipment you have in the yard you should look a vibratory smooth drum roller attachment for the skid steer or mini skid or even the tractor. I am sure Messicks could hook you up with something. If you buy a used roller that you are going to use sparingly, that is another piece of equipment to maintain - oil changes, batteries, hoses, tires, etc. Have a great day!

I don’t know why you don’t sell pine for fire pit ( non heat ) burners. It’s best for creating an atmosphere for sitting round a fire pit. It seasons twice as quick as hardwoods. Easier to cut and split and is very cheap to buy. It could be sold at a slightly cheaper price returning a premium for what it is. Just a thought.

Coming from a pro stand point, when you don’t chop the leaves they’re quicker to just blow back when the wind swirls in the cold months. It’s hard to deal with massive amounts of leaves just grinding them up. A mulch blade and a bagger is king Especially if you have woods nearby

Mike, I believe it’s called value-added, firewood , when you cut firewood for a specific market at a smaller size but change a higher price. Like when you buy a small coke in the checkout line but it cost as much as a 2-liter, or you buy a small bowl of fruit instead of the whole bag of apples

19:31 Im finding there's always sacrifice whatever way you work things. Smaller quantities to suit the fire pits or campers etc ends up as more handling so you increase your labour hours per quantity sold. I like to try and combine both as much ss I can- a bitta bulk and a bitta higher margin smaller quantities.

Good morning Morgan’s Here in NH the demand has risen as well.. Green wood is going from $225 to $275 a cord is what I am seeing. Seasoned wood is going for about $350 to $400 a cord.. If you can find it.. Most smaller producers also don’t have to advertise.. People go back year after year.. Truthfully I don’t see but I don’t look for the smaller wood like you want to get into. It’s probably there but I don’t see it.. But I understand your shift you want to do.. Economics at work.. Not a thing wrong with that.. Thanks for sharing your perspective with us.. Have a Day Cheers

As a comparison, I paid right at 300 for a pallet of wood pellets for the pellet stove. These are made from sawdust and wood cutting byproducts I believe. Nowhere near the quantity of wood as a full cord. This 300 in pellets saves me over 2,000 in propane a year and heats house better. Point being, going smaller and charging more is a good call. Those new houses likely don’t have wood burning fireplaces. May be worth checking those houses out as they will be your future customers. You may even want to become a dealer for the brio/solo stoves.

I'm sure Cliff and your regulars will still get the usual firewood, but I like the idea of selling less, making more. Specialty firewood. Yes, it sounds like a win-win. Again, the land plane does a wonderful job. The drive looked bran new. It would be nice to roll it. If you had a roller, do you think once a year would be sufficient? Mom's and sister's drives don't get a whole lot of traffic. Maybe you should revise your new idea of selling less, make more, to selling more and more until you can buy a roller!! Lol, I know you've got it all planned out. You carry on doing what Mike does, and I'll carry on enjoying watching. I've not bought a Jackery yet, I hope the snow holds off a little longer. Now I want to praise the people of bucks county for making a stand for the strength of America to bring back the voter integrity and hopefully some truth and justice back into our voting system. Stand strong and continue to stand as we all should be that shining light of truth, thank you ! Thanks for what you do Mike and family ! Oh Melissa I see the 60s and early 70s is making a comeback I sure enjoyed those 60s and 70s looks good on you ! 👍

I agree on the firewood idea. oddly enough i get asked fot firewood than lumber. but I don't do firewood fot other people. maybe firewood in bundles for smaller stoves extra and types specific is something i might try. but I'm not really set up for it.. at this point in life I'm trying t do less , not more work. lol

I remember going to grandpa and grandmas farm and the only lawn care they did were sheep in a white picket fence Around the house. Now that was a smart way of doing yard work!
