One of the most beautiful songs where Chance has the lead. His voice so smooth, sexy, with so much feeling and a raw edge makes it the perfect voice for this song. The harmony is so rich. The background sounds great with the bass, the tenor voices where you sometimes hear a slightly higher (?) tenor. Or I don't really know how to describe it. In any case, it sounds to me as if a wind is blowing through it, which gives it that extra something for me. So beautiful.

Listen to Jason Isbell sing this from his Austin City Limits live performance. He is recently newly sober and sings it for his wife, Amanda Shires (who is a kick ass musician and fiddle player in her own right) in a very relatable, touching, and emotional performance. The way Isbell writes, compared to most radio country, is like the difference between Cormac McCarthy vs. Nicholas Sparks. Home Free has never had a problem with song selection…

I have one problem with this beautiful song, which means I struggle to take it in the intended spirit. There's a lot of alcoholism in my family, and in my mind the narrator saying he really will give up the booze "this time" is a huge red flag for the future of the fictional couple. I know that's not how it's intended, it's just my personal (luckily secondhand) experience. Anyway, I'm glad that doesn't catch most listeners!
@hatleyhoward7193 Жыл бұрын
It’s written by Jason Isbell who was an alcoholic and has achieved sobriety. I don’t think it’s out of terms to say “this time” as it’s a life long struggle but rest assured, he’s remained sober.

@@elvwood He performed this live for Austin City Limits and the entire crowd cheers at that line in the performance because Isbell is so open and honest about his struggle in real life and through his songs. I get how it could be misinterpreted though. Isbell writes songs like Cormack McCarthy writes novels…it’s dense and poetic and never outright literal. Most other artist are like Nicholas Sparks… not not a novel, but lacks the prose, syntax, and imagery. He isn’t shy about addiction and how he affected his loved ones. I highly suggest going down the rabbit hole.
