Thank you so much! Your instructions was very easy to follow :) picked up the basic song structure rather easily and made my own fills in between the chords. Also, could you explain the fingering for the ermm.. Octave walk around the 1:50 mark? I kept trying to follow it by ear and by watching your fingering but can't quite match it. Im doing X,10,7,7,X,X slide to X,12,9,9,x,x, and slide to X,14,12,12,X,X .... could you help clarify this for me please? Its killing me not to get it right hahaa :P
@MarkZabel7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the kind words too! I improvised it, so I'm sure I was just trying to get to the 3rd of the A chord (C#). It sounds like I'm going x,10,x,7,x,x to x,13,x,10,x,x to x,14,x,11,x,x (Notice I deaden the 3rd string with my left hand.) But other phrases work well too. Notating only on the 2nd string here for convenience, your 10, 12, 14 is good, as is 12, 13, 14. Landing on the 14 is the idea.

Mark, That unique Fmin#-ish chord is the Andy Summers type 5-fret sucky stretch voicing based on both 6th & 5th strings. Can't remember the name--9th something?? Anyways see "Every Breath" & "Message in Bottle". Dave Matthews I think has used that type of as have others similar fingering. See "Warehouse"
@MarkZabel6 жыл бұрын
Ha ha! Thanks. Yeah, I'm not into hand pain at all. I did a video a long time ago on Message In a Bottle, but I used a much easier (IMHO) fingering. I seem to remember somebody commenting something like, "Hey, that's not how it's played." Yes, I know ... that's why I put it in the title. Oh well, sometimes it's best just to laugh. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it!

@MarkZabel8 жыл бұрын

@manuelfernandez93047 жыл бұрын
Nope, that's a totally different chord. The actual chord here is F# minor add9. The chord that you suggested (F#min9) has a flat 7 which isn't in the chord that John plays
@bobphil21984 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark just a quick question, can you explain what you did at 1:51 ? I’m having trouble picking it apart on my own.
@MarkZabel4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes. Those are "Octaves". You play those on guitar by playing non-adjacent strings (here the 2nd and 4th strings) several frets apart (like 2nd string 10 and 4th string 7). The same note plays, but separated by an octave. They're a bit tricky because you've got to deaden the string in between the two that are sounded. Listen to Wes Montgomery or George Benson to hear how true masters do it! It's a neat effect.
@bobphil21984 жыл бұрын

Thanks! I wonder if he does it on a tune like this. Doesn't really need it and the thicker neck creates problems for me doing the thumb wrap like with a Strat. For the Hendrix-ey, SRV-ey rhythmic stuff it helps in muting for sure.
