This is definitely one of Denzel's best characters. Amazing work. They're all great actors, too. I like how he didn't care about all the reasons this guy was giving for doing his dirt. One could understand being upset about how the military treats people, but Robert's concern was that they murdered his friend and took their nonsense too far, killing innocent people for money. That's a perfect example of what I think makes this character so powerful and likable.

Robert is just a little more naive about the nature of his work. Susan ordered them to kill people and would have had more blood on her hands than at least most of the people she ordered them to kill. By such accounts she deserved what she got, but Robert was sentimental about such a person who he referred to as a "friend". To her, him and Dave were just pawns on a chess board. Had either of them died in their line of service, she would have simply found some more maladjusted young men to recruit off the streets in their place.

I'd argue that it's just as much self-preservation for McCall. If McCall left on his own, there's a good chance that one of the four of them would try to quietly try to follow him and nip him in the bud. However, by saying aloud to the wife "Hey, your husband said you could give me a ride!", he forces Dave into a situation where he'll have to agree to let him go with his family (what's he gonna do, say "No, McCall's lying, don't go with him", and arouse suspicion?), and McCall gets three reasons why the other mercs won't try to kill him until he's safely away.
