One could understand being upset about how the military treats people, but Robert's concern was that they murdered his friend and took their nonsense too far, killing innocent people for money. I like that detail that even when Robert is leaving and walking backwards, he doesn't turn his back to them until he grabs the kid, and he knows they won't shoot him in the back. Pure ruthlessness and strategy. Also given McCalls reputation and the fact, that these punks know exactly what he's capable off, they knew they're dead.
