I have been a fan a long time my friend and hung my first axe today…correctly. Right before I sold my folk’s place I found a very rusted Boy’s Axe head. 2 1/4 lb. The little axe will live with me forever. I want to thank you for showing me how to hang it properly my friend. It meant a great deal to me. mp

Had excellent results pounding a fat wood wedge in till it practically disintegrated on top of the wedge. The mushroom effect was great after sawing off the excess. Everything was homemade except the axe head. No metal required. Then surface burned the handle to bring out the grain with a torch. Linseed oil to finish. Thanks for the tips!

I’ve got a store bought axe that the handle broke on me but it had one of those round wedges in it, so I bought a new proper hickory handle and reused the round metal wedge and it’s always stayed tight since. It seems like a good method.

I love it!! I’m hanging a wedge beater for my buddy this afternoon. Beautiful rafting pattern head. It’s a no name and the pole isn’t hardened, but it’s got the weight and wide butt that those wedges love! I got tricked and assumed that it was a real rafting head because of the shape. Plastic wedges won’t hurt it’s butt anyway, so everything is fine and great. Great stuff man!

Hey buddy. First off thank you for what you do. How do you determine how long of a handle to use on a axe and a hatchet
@FIGGY65 Жыл бұрын
The easiest way for most common ( and decent to above average quality manufacturers) is take your head weight in pounds and multiply it by ten to get your handle length in inches-for axes and hatches. Now this formula might get thrown out the window when you’re dealing with custom/competition axes but it should get you in a safe ballpark for 99 percent of your needs. I did some basic research and can credit Mr Dogstar from the BushcraftUSA forum for this genius advice and his putting a chart together for all of the top manufacturers offerings. Don’t forget that the handle length is from the top of the axe head all the way to the handles end🤙🏼

Hey Buckin, have you ever hung an axe on an osage orange handle? Or hedgeapple/bodark as we call it also. Just curious how they hold up vs hickory or ash.
@johnnorris12272 жыл бұрын
Going off its specs osage orange will most likely be a little heavier than a hickory handle but it should hold up better than any other domestic species.

Madsens saw shop in WA state. They’ve got all lengths and styles, even complete axes. Good stuff too. I’ve gotten 4 axe handles from them for different projects of mine, and am extremely happy/pleased with the quality of the end product that I made. 2 28” wedge bangers and 2 20” long hatchets. I wanted shorter wedge bangers for a compromise between long and speedy head for deep driving, or short and nimble for extremely good carry in the bush. Compromise won. 28” and 4lb head.
