No, not really. I've gone past sad about the current state of gaming, I've completely opted out of any AAA studio titles. There has never been a better time to support indie devs. Kenshi 2 is being developed right now, stardew valley has a fuckload of mods, battlebit is awesome. AAA devs aren't game companies anymore. the titles we grew up with we will always have but the studios are dead, everything dies eventually, but new life emerges too, that's life.

We have to remember the miserable situation Larian was after the release of Divinity: Dragon Commander. It was not ready but they were forced to release it. That’s a very common story, but Larian decided the only way out of these predicaments is to go their own way. I supported the crowdfunding of Divinity: Original Sin on the basis of that alone. It almost bankrupted them, it could have been a sad tale of a studio going the way of the dodo, but instead we got a huge success story. I think it’s inspiring.

There's a video of Larian's founder talking about some the hard times the company went through in it's early years when the company was so lacking in funds that for a while every employee signed a weekly contract because there was only ever enough money for one week of pay at a time. At some points he had no money himself and couldn't drive back as his car was out of gas and he had to ask his wife to wire him money just to pay for gas to drive home.

Barely any developers nowadays GET that chance. Most AAA games are beholden by publishers/shareholders/investors to make an exact kind of game, and there are different extremes in the west AND in Japan, where the director and producer roles are flipped. I think a lot of people think turn based rpg = jrpg style turn based battles where the combat happens in a separate mode/phase. But in BG3 the environment of the game map in integral to the combat itself, I think most people unfamiliar with that kind of gameplay will appreciate the difference after playing and getting used to it.

I'm an old gamer and I played BG1 and BG2 when they came out decades ago and I loved it then as I'm loving BG 3 now. I'm happy that young gamers are getting into the cRPG genre. This is the kind of laid back game you play slowly, for weeks, months and years. Learning party mechanics and how to synergize spells and skills. Saving often is key, reloading and replaying again and again, and trying different tactics and strategies in order to get your party out of sticky situations. Back then we didn't have youtube and reddit and the advantage of walkthroughs and build guides. BG2 had a pretty thick manual which I had to read just to figure out what spells and skills to use. lol. Wish I could control more party members in BG3 though but I'm really enjoying the game and looking forward to more cRPG releases in the future.

I'm a CRPG fan going all the way back to Ultima III. I'm glad to see a game of this type get the funding to really do it justice, and I'm glad to see this genre getting attention from people who might not normally be attracted to it. I've heard of people buying this game even though they aren't into this genre just because they want to support a studio that is doing things right. It is making me think back to Elden Ring. Since challenging action combat is not something that my god-awful reflexes and general lack of patience for physical activity can handle, I didn't buy that game or get into it, but from watching videos, it looks like a masterpiece of its genre. Maybe I should consider buying it. I might not get far, but I'm probably competent enough to at least tinker around in the world a little and get some feel for what it is like, and supporting a company that is doing everything right in an industry that gets so much wrong feels like the right thing to do. Maybe Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 will inspire some other developers to push the envelope in the right direction - no cash shop, no battle passes, no Denuvo - simply a complete experience that is a work of art rather than a corporate cash grab.

In one past interview about the founding of Larian Studios on Gamespot i believe. Sven told the story about Divinity Original Sin 1 putting the company almost out of business. They had to release the game in a somewhat unfinished state because the banks gave them a hard deadline on a monday to return a large some of money. So they released and the game became a big success and Larian had the money to pay back the greedy banks. One small thing about Belgium culture if you fail to pay off the banks and your business goes bankrupt. You cut every single oppertunity to restart a business, because the banks won't lend you any money. If you fail, you failed and there is no Reset button. So imagine the stress Sven and the team had at the time.

I'm not that big into games like this but something about this one is special. I've put in some good hours in this game and the time is flying. I am happily surprised how much fun this is.

Larion studios is just so damn good in general. They have done 3 huge RPG titles and all of them slap. And they did it with a pretty damn small studio.

It's been long time since i played a game like this. It really feels like an adventure. Actions have consequences, and they are often hilarious.

BG 1-2 set the expectations high and I have to say BG 3 went way over and beyond of those expectations....I spent insane amount of time to talk with everybody as the voice acting is uneartly and brilliant (speaking with goblins was a Snatch feeling :D)

The special currency doesn't exist just for obfuscation. It exists because you cannot refund it. A normal top-up is refundable, but the moment you bought crystals it becomes non-refundable.
