Thank you for showing my city at its best! I've always been proud of being born and living in Leeds. It has such a lot to offer and maybe your video will convince some less educated Southerners that the north isn't all bad! ❤😊

About 35 years ago I got a job as a long-distance lorry driver, driving a 3 ton truck across the country, delivering mostly pallettes of printed stuff. One of the first long-distance drops I did was into Leeds city centre... And it was a real eye-opener for this naive London boy. I couldn't BELIEVE...that there was this OTHER CITY...with huge, beautiful, majestic, buildings, built in the classical-style...elegant, classy, Victorian shopping arcades...just like the ones in Piccadilly...and this strange "thing" called..."NORTHERN CIVIC PRIDE". I just had no idea such places existed. We Brits CAN be incredibly parochial...and I'd be the first to admit guilty to being "London-centric" in the past...due to my families background and long history of working on the Thames as lighterman, tugman, river police....and market traders. I really believed that outside of London was just "grass and yokels" 😂 But...Leeds really opened my eyes to a DIFFERENT Britain!

@christoguichard4311. I was on the road about the same time as you as a nationwide courier , brought up in Surrey and seeing new places back then was a joy , sadly I witnessed a lot of the old britain being demolished and every town turned into virtual clones of each other. , I also had family on my dads side who were lighterman back in the day. Glad I got to see the country when I did .

Fond memories of Leeds . I lived in the centre at Union Street swimming baths from 1938 to 1946 now the site of John Lewis . I walked through the Market every weekday to school at Leeds Parish Church . Across the road from the baths was the Marketyard with the notorious Market Tavern known as the Mad House and to the side the Yorkshire Hussars . I remember the Market on fire during the war and water was pumped out of the swimming pool to help extinguish the flames . Also a huge exodus from the Market one night of rats led by the King rat . Interesting times .

It’s absolutely years since I’ve been to Leeds, we used to go there from Rotherham when we wanted something special to wear. I thought your vlog from Leeds was fantastic, the city looked spotless, I never saw a litter. The architecture and that old pub looked amazing, I also loved the Victorian arcades. We are definitely visiting when we are next up there. Thanks James.

I have just come across your video and I'm a Leeds lass. I'm that old I was 5 when I saw the market burning and remember crying about the animals in the pet shop but thankfully everyone helped get them out. I love the artist you mentioned, he's painted Roundhay Park too. Where Riess is, it used to be a few little shops together. I love our architecture but sadly so much has been lost and the skyline has changed so much with all the flats being built but I suppose it's better to build up instead of across our once green and pleasant land. Great video thanks ❤

For me James this was the best cinematography you've done... absolutely beautiful. I've had a few hours in Leeds before, just for the passport office. The biggest thing for me was the clean stone architecture, which I love. I don't know why but I wasn't expecting this from Leeds, because I do love nice architecture. It was all nice and clean lines in your video against the beautiful blue sky...wow. It's only an hour from me and I think I'd love a night out there on the real ales ( like yourself), thanks for a fantastic insight. ❤

Superb video James and a great idea. I used to live between York and Tadcaster so often went into Leeds when I was a youngster. I remember the arcades and going to the cinema in the Merrion centre. How right you are about lifting your eyes to see the buildings above the shop fronts. Nowadays people walk around with their heads pointing at their mobile phones and miss so much. The gravestone of Arthur Currer Briggs appears to show him with a seed hopper round his waist and he is casting the seed for a new crop.

As a lass from leeds and still live in leeds. I really enjoyed watching this. I havent been into leeds city centre for about 40 years so to see how much it's changed is astonishing i only know the old bits and buildings. Yes please do cemeteries and museums. I totally agree with you that two paint trays and a table or 4 pianos stuck together is NOT art, ive never been in the art gallery that i have been saying for years i must do. You should have looked up in the leeds kirkgate market at all the beautiful victorian architecture they also have beautiful victorian toilets up on the veranda too but closed that area off around 30 years ago to preserve it. I wish they would re open it up and put a security guard up there to protect it from vandalism which is why i think it was closed off to protect it but now its unseen and beautiful.

Thanks for walking that way into Leeds. I used to park on that side of the ring road on Whitehall Road. The part which now looks to have parking meters before the footbridge. Used to have to get there before 7am to get a free spot. I worked in them offices on your left just before the canal (previously on Wellington Street site). Still work for Yorkshire Post (coming up 34 yrs) but now working from home permanently. We moved out the office start of covid and never moved back. Surprised you never pointed out the Channel 4 office which was the old Majestics Nightclub. Before it mysteriously burnt down. Also the Banyan Kitchen which used to be the old Post Office. Then the Queens Hotel where Jimmy Saville was laid in state after he died. Locals queued half way down Wellington street to pay their respects. Remember folk taking time out in their lunch break to walk down. If only they knew what we do now 😡 Love going into Leeds for a day/night out. Pity they stopped the X10 bus from Barnsley, that was a great bus for a Leeds afternoon session. That flute guy is usually down the side of Mill Hill Chapel at the side entrance to Trinity. Been playing that flute for at least 20years 🤣

If you are near a Doubletree by Hilton (such as the one in Leeds) just pop in and go to reception. Ask for one of their world famous chocolate chip cookies. I’ve watched all your video. This is the first one of yours. I’ve watched myself even though my partner has watched a fair few of your videos some with you and some with Helen in them. I live in Leeds and I was really impressed that you came here and you found places to visit. I’ve never been to the arm even though I work round the corner from there I’ve never been really inside so it was interesting to see Your take on things. Hope you come back to Leeds again. You never know I could end up meeting you.

Hi James I enjoyed your vlog of Leeds. It reminds me of Liverpool city centre my home. I like your idea about the cemeteries. I love cemeteries reading the names and wondering what their lives were like. My husband thinks I'm a bit weird 😂.
