In this video I am very excited to show you my new camping dirtbike.
I kit it out with ‪@GiantLoopMoto‬ bags, and gear. Talk about my plans with the klx 300r, why I got it and go for a test run.
I've never ridden a dirtbike or motorcycle in my life up until a few days ago.

Joe, my 17 year old son just got his motorcycle license. Your vids could save his and many others. He’s a smart kid and he took the required course in Wisconsin. He aced the driving part of the course which not many in his class did so I feel confident but it’s always good to see how others have failed because there are always things that people don’t think about.

I was SO afraid the worst would happen when you said you’d have to LEARN to ride!!!. I did the same thing at 40 years old with a Harley!!!! I’d never even as much rode a mini bike as a kid!!!. I went full blown Harley during my mid life crisis!!!. Kept it long enough to receive the title from the state and SOLD that death trap!!!!. They are super dangerous for a well trained skilled lifetime rider but to a newbie is a literal death trap!!!!!. Glad you’re still here and really hate this had to happen to such an outstanding guy!!! Prayers for you and your family Joe!!!!🙏🙏

Pointless fearmongering. It comes down to every rider themselves, are they smart and careful or not. Joe is a great guy and doing good video content, but in this case, he was just not smart and was a daredevil. Yep - barkbusters or similar will also prevent breaking stuff when he drops it (like the throttle tube on the CB500 or breaking the ends off levers). I'd also recommend a skid plate and maybe radiator guards. Any other bike armor is probably more than Joe really needs for motocamping

Nobody mentiined it, but one of the important rule of off-road is to never ride alone. A simple fall is enough to broke a leg and you are stuck there. In your case you probably know how to survive, but it's still better to ride with someone for safety

We love you for who you are, not who you think you should be. Stop worrying about the algorithm and loss of income from less videos. When you get back to just showing us your life, and what you like doing, you will have a long successful and happy long term future on youtube. Stop focusing on view counts, new subscribers, engagement. Just do you! That is why we are here. You have a great story telling ability, focus on that and your family and the rest will follow! 1 month is absolutely nothing, unfortunately. I've been riding 6 years now and I'm still learning and improving my skills. Albeit I don't do any hard offroad, but every discipline of riding requires constant learning and skill improvement, even regular daily road commuting. Motorcycling is a lifelong journey that requires constant learning and constant skill development/maintenance. That said it can be one of the most rewarding and relaxing things ever. My life has improved so much since I started riding, but I do understand it's not for everyone, sadly. I can't imagine my life without my bike now. Most important though, is to wear your safety gear, most especially your helmet. Everything that happened to him could have been avoided if he had his helmet.

Bikes are great! A rider course is definitely worth doing but riding isn't hard, you'll do great! Slow down and downshift before you get to turns, not while you're in them, be super careful on wet pavement and grass, and always be aware that you're one mistake away from a serious injury... stakes are higher on a bike. Don't push your limits. Looking forward to seeing what you get yourself into with this thing!

We just threw a backpack on and took as much water as we could some filters for water an some dry food, first aid kit, a Hamic, etc and off we went. About shifting, the main thing is not to lug the engine so much. It should feel free and loose especially important until the engine is broken in. That doesn't mean screamin' it's guts out, you don't need that with a 4 stroke. Get a set of chrome moly handlebars and use the cross brace pad that comes with them. They don't bend when you fall off, also, get a set of aluminum hand guards to protect the clutch and brake handles. It sucks to be in the middle of nowhere and break off the clutch lever. My brother and I raced off road Hare Scrambles and enduros from 1980 to about 2005 (we got old) Your milage may vary but we cut our bars down to 28 inches but we raced through the trees a lot. If you cut them down you lose leverage so do some soul searching before you start chopping. If you aren't having trouble with the seat height I would not be in a hurry to start messing with the suspension, ( but I am 6'1" so there's that). You can do it but to do it right is spelled C A S H. if you get cheap on it the bike won't handle worth a damn.

Wow. Why in the world this guy didn’t take it slow or take courses when he is completely green is beyond me. I’ve been riding right at 3yrs. I watched tons of MotoJitsu and DanDanTheFireman vids and took online courses to prep before I picked up my Honda ADV150. I wanted a bike/scoot that was an auto and could do at least 65mph for highway riding. The goal was to focus on fundamentals-balance, braking, leaning, steering/countersteering, etc. It’s too much for some ppl bc you’re using both hands *and* both feet simultaneously on a manual, whereas with an auto, you’re only using your hands and body. Now I own a Yamaha MT-07 and Honda 300 Rally. Because I focused on fundamentals first, it was SUPER easy to implement the clutch and shifter. Insane that this guy didn’t take precautions or courses. Some people’s egos just won’t allow them to admit they’re an amateur at something 🤷🏼‍♀️

Add to all that that the main thing that caused all his problems was that he went out without a helmet. He never said it in his other video, but the facial injuries and coma make it clear he wasn't wearing his helmet. Despite his lack of skill, all this could have still been avoided if he just wore his helmet. Luckily he's still around to learn from this hard lesson.

@@jacks1bonnielass I had no idea how to operate a motorcycle at all when I took my beginner course. I kept stalling so much the first half of the day on day 1 of training that they had to pull me aside to give me a quick 1 on 1 on how to properly operate the clutch. Worked though as I almost never stalled anymore after that. That was 6 years ago. Now on my third bike, a 1290 SAS, but started my journey on a CBR500R and stayed with that bike for 3 years. Another 3 years on my second bike, a 701 SM, with the 1290 being new for this year. I was hoping to take an advanced motorcycle training course this year to practice some skills and learn some new ones perhaps, but they are not cheap and money is needed on other things, so will see. Hoping to at least do it next year if not this year. I do like to visit the local training area here where they train the new riders from time to time and practice my skills on the painted lines they have there when there's nobody there though. Dan and Motojitsu are really good channels for info, love those guys. Learn a lot from them also.

From someone whose been riding dirtbikes and quads for 15 years, here's a couple of tips for better riding that I've learned: -when riding over technical terrain at a slower pace, pull the clutch in just a little bit, not all the way, but about halfway. This will help prevent the bike from stalling and give more traction to the back wheel. -sit as far up as you can comfortably on the seat, you have much better control of the bike this way than if you're sitting farther back. -also when going over technical terrain, it's best to stand up if you can. Keep your knees bent at a slight angle and make sure you're on the balls of your feet on the foot pegs. -when turning, weight the outside of the bike opposite the direction your turning. This will help prevent the front wheel from sliding out and help you turn sharper. So if you're turning left, you would weight the right side of the bike with your right leg. Don't try to hard, just a little bit, it doesn't take much. - Remember to "look where you want to go, not at what you're afraid of hitting". It may seem obvious but a lot of beginners will hesitate when they see something they want to avoid like a big rock in the path for example. And they will focus on the rock. Don't do that lol. Pick a line around the obstacle and keep your eyes straight ahead. Don't look down and don't focus on the front fender too much. -when going uphill, lean forward on the bike, pull the clutch in just a little bit for better traction, and make sure you're in a lower gear. I personally wouldn't be in anything higher than 3rd unless you're doing jumps on a motocross track lol. -when going down hill it's the opposite. Lean back a little bit, if you need to use the brakes it's best to use the back brake from my experience. There's a ton more I could type. I absolutely LOVE dirtbikes and it's undoubtedly my number 1 passion. "The Total Dirt Rider Manual" by Pete Peterson is a great riding book. It covers everything from the proper riding techniques, some which I discussed above, the different types of riding gear, mechanical stuff and routine bike maintenance. Welcome to the riding community my friend! If I was closer I'd love to ride with you but I'm in South Carolina lol.

It helps you maintain better control over the bike & stop hitting all the water holes on the road! You have no idea how deep those are. You could lose control of the bike if you hit a deep one. Hey Jo, Yvon From Quebec. I'm getting my best English out to say thanks a million time for the inspiration, the humour, the craziness, all of it, all of you ! I discovered you through Tony from Ab camping...Poor man who lost both of his dogs. You the man, man.

Joe, I too waited until I was in my late 30's to start riding. I'm now in my early 60's. All of my riding has been on pavement, though my current ride is a dual sport. I've no experience riding dirt, but would definitely advise taking the rider course before you get on paved roads. I've dropped every one of my bikes, but never under power. It happens. Learn how to lift your bike properly. Your back will thank you. Feathering the clutch is a very valuable skill in riding, probably more so in dirt. Keep practicing until it's second nature. Enjoy the ride! Thanks for sharing this new adventure.

@Josephallen19 Dude, be careful!!! Get super comfy going slower! Dont be ripping down the roads with all those potholes before you know what youre doing!!! This is coming from someone who raced 250gp, ride an Aprilia RSVR Factory 1100cc VTwin, and i have been riding all my life. Just be careful at first Joe!! When it comes to turning at slow speeds like in your backyard, make sure you are downshifting to like first gear. And make sure that your idol is turned down so it doesn't just rip right off the get. So maybe find a really good mechanic and to make friends. There are groups that get together, just search your area, for off-road, dirt bike groups camping etc, or if there is a known place where people ride off-road equipment near you maybe just go talk to people out there.

@watchchannel8201 I just did. I honestly wish I would have reached out much much sooner. Thoughts and prayers to Joe and his family! Bikes are no joke, and it's never "if" you're going down, it's a matter of "when". I've literally had motorcyclists die in my arms, as I'm trying to sweep blood from their airways. It's no joke. Just glad he's ok.

His lack of skill and overconfidence were both issues for sure, but I think the big thing was the helmet, or lack thereof. He didn't say whether he was wearing it or not, but those facial injuries and coma tell me he wasn't. Had he worn his helmet, I'm sure he would've avoided the majority of what he went through.

I agree. I took a riders course before it was even required here in the States. I figured if I even learn one thing that keeps me safer it's worth it. The course gave me the confidence to go down to the dealer buy my first motorcycle and ride it home.

I don't know of any groups or people in Canada. As far as your riding, it looks like you're sitting too much. You'd find you have more control on the rig terrain when standing. Couldn't really tell though since all the video was taken in FPPOV.

Glad you have joined the motorbike world! A bike can take you places a car/truck can't. I come from a family of mechanics and riders, take time to learn about what makes your bike work, having the knowledge to diagnose and repair basic mechanical issues plus having the right tools on board can get you out of a sticky situation.

I truly believe if you weren’t raised on motorcycles, then getting one later in life is a horrible idea. There is something that’s learned from riding so much as a kid that you can’t just teach.. but to jump on and just go is crazy. So confident he didn’t even wear a helmet when he crashed. At that point he would have been riding for less than a month.

This is great dude, i've been following you for years and to see you ride a bike makes me so happy! Can't wait to see more. - At slow speeds you can use your clutch in a slipping manor (holding it on the point the bike starts moving) to control your speed, in first gear this is a game changer combined with using your breaks. You can practice this doing figure 8s, circles, whatever.
