It's unclear why the caller did not insist on formal contracts, use of a known CPA firm, and detailed and specific legal documentation as to the rights, responsibilities and profit distributions within the partnership. Has he examined the balance sheets at any time, personally and analyzed same? Are there any profit and loss statements at all he has interrogated? If not, why not because his laziness and conflict avoidance has damaged him. I'm cynical. Sometimes deliberately loose and sloppy documentation (including tax filings) are conveniently used to hide things. So a full forensic audit might be order as this is dodgy behavior. ETA - Hypothesis/Theory: Just a guess, but there actually might be a second set of books which Dave has never seen. Conceivable the partner selected him (as a patsy) specifically because any involved and business-savvy individual would not combine resources with him. He's probably putting Dave's name on the docs to establish liability if this blows up to the IRS. In fact in may already have done so, hence the naming.

The caller is asking for PERMISSION to ditch on his friend. Caller tries to justify it by saying 'but his wife sucks' or 'but the business is mismanaged' or whatever nonsense he's convinced himself of. But the guilt of ditching on someone who put his heart and soul into a business and who shared the same struggle meals trying to scratch their way out of poverty, that guilt is heavy... and it grows by the tonne each and every year of struggle - and is deadly for each decade. So instead of just dealing with the obvious feelings of rejection of his friend getting married (and more than that, just getting your friend at his worse, and only as much as his wife will allow which is scant), they instead are just running away, leaving their best friend in the dust to sort of the pieces, not just of the business (which is a mess) but also of their strained friendship. The thing is: you're a weak coward. You should NOT just ditch your friend, one which you obviously struggled along side for years with even being roommates... and instead you should be BRAVE and tell him that you feel hurt and that you're afraid of losing him as a friend. Don't hide behind the company being mismanaged, that's something different completely and you know it. I am all for defensive driving, and that saying 'you can't save others from drowning, until you save yourself first'... and there is a time to make hard choices that might feel selfish and are sad to make but are vital to your overall health and wellbeing and those of those you care for and love.... BUT THIS AIN'T IT TEX. You're just running away because you're a hurt that your friend ditched you, and you're too scared to just tell him the truth. Sort that out first, THEN go onto greener pastures, at least you would be a respectable human being if you did that.... not just as other will see you, but how you should see yourself. In short, you feel bad thinking about ditching your friend because that's the wrong thing to do. You should still look for other work, but just not as a means of retaliation. Tell him, you're hurting. And as these things typically go, it won't get better, and you should leave.... if you do it in the reverse order of leaving and getting around to telling him you're hurting at some point maybe next tuesday or next leap year,... then you're worse of a friend than they are... they deserve better... you both do... and maybe if you talk it out you can make it work; if you don't even try, then it's over.

You hit the nail on the head. Yes his partner could be dealing with the struggles (or bliss) of being a newlywed and therefore isnt a workaholic or the backbone as he once was but this isn't about that as you said.
@sarahholland2600Күн бұрын
But at the start, he says he's doing all the donkey work because the partner has "stepped back" since he married . So if in effect he's running it alone , then it's not a partnership & his friend deserves it.
@anonymous49125Күн бұрын
@@sarahholland2600 that's assuming that it is in fact true and not just an excuse to dissuade a guilty conscious. I am guessing it is not true because he feels guilty for quitting; If he instead was calling about his anger and resentment that would be more telling towards being upset for being left with the bag, but that's not what he did... he wanted delony to tell him that what he was doing was okay. Heck delony even went harder and said 'you should quit now for liability reasons' (which is good advice, to be fair), and even that got a guilty kickback of "naw... I can't do that to him..."... and he wants to at least give him months more of his efforts (which again, doesn't sound like something someone that is being put upon unjustly would say...) That said, you're not wrong in your accounting of their conversation. But that said as well, I think that my assertion is very likely the case given the circumstances. If you forgive me a delony-ism, "action is a language"... and he acted really guilty and emoted as much about ditching on his friend. None the less, fair point.

Doesn't matter if you are religious or not, a smart person will still recognize that everyone of faith will feel that THEIR religion is the true one... Also, doesn't it come off a bit insecure, or even passive-aggressive to have to reaffirm everyone you talk to that your belief is the only true way?
@nicklowe_2 күн бұрын
@ His statement was obviously true, everyone feels their religion is correct. Regardless of if a person’s smart or not, it’s pretty obvious. Christians say this all the time, the one true gospel, it’s super common to hear this. I’m only pointing out that, it’s odd for John to rebuke him on that, especially given the fact that he believes that the gospels are exclusively true. Just one of those things where, if John isn’t Christian, just say it, then him making the rebuke makes sense. Otherwise he just sounds like he’s play-acting Christian-which bothers me more than if he were just upfront.
@demgphix2 күн бұрын
@nicklowe_ No one should have to prove their faith to anyone else, especially a stranger. Why do you think Christians, or anyone for that matter feel the need to tell us in the same breath that their religion is the only true one? It's either an argument or some weird dog whistle to upset people of other faiths. As for John, I think its awesome that he respects other religions even if he does not believe in them. But that respect must come from his understanding that others follow their faith for the same, or similar reasons as himself.
@demgphix2 күн бұрын
