This seriously just made me cry. I'm from Australia and have someone in Sri Lanka who is just like a son to me... and I struggled to get him a simple visit visa for 3 years before I was finally successful in January 2018. I know exactly what you wanted to achieve and how the rejection would have made you feel. It's gut-wrenching to have someone you love be harshly (and falsely) judged like this. Immigration is the only area of law in otherwise developed countries where a person is presumed guilty until 'proven' innocent, as though their bank balance determines their character and integrity. It's completely dehumanising.

My point was really about the extraordinary level of scrutiny and suspicion directed at people from Sri Lanka. Even getting married may not have made things necessarily that much easier - in fact, that tends to arouse even more suspicion that they are getting married simply for the purpose of escaping to a developed country. In her video, Lucie mentioned that they wanted "11 different documents". In fact, they were probably looking for far more than that - but what they're looking for is not actually allowed to be made public. To bring my 'son' to Australia for a visit, I think we were finally successful after submitting at least 30 different forms of documentation... just for a short visit. That included pages and pages of photos of the time we had spent together travelling around Sri Lanka. A link to this KZbin channel might have forced them to watch and reconsider their view that there was no evidence of an engagement - Lucie has 181,000 witnesses to it who might say otherwise! She mentioned that their assumption was that Lahiru would visit the UK and then not return to Sri Lanka. That 'incentive to return' is critical... but often difficult to 'prove'. The real point of my comment was that Lahiru is considered to be 'guilty' of wanting to do the wrong thing until he is able to provide enough evidence of a reason not to. All the third party support in the world will not help with that, unfortunately. Although I don't have any suggestions for an alternative approach to border protection, the current system is based on what are really false assumptions about the motivations of the majority of a population based on the poor choices of a small minority. You could even go so far as to call it 'legalised racism'. I was also trying to empathise with Lucie and how she felt that moment she read the refusal letter - and that feeling is certainly no different between our two situations.

Lucky.. So sorry to hear about Lahiru’s visa. It’s not easy to get a visa to countries like UK for the first time, especially for a fresh passport. What you need to do is let him travel to couple of other countries just to get the stamp on the his passport. Maybe India Singapore is the best countries to travel. Other option your parents can invite him to travel to the UK . Then the full responsibility of him should be on your parents .. purpose of travelling can be mentioned as Lahiru is our daughter’s fiancé , first time travelling to visit us for an important family reunion etc .. don’t be upset and lose hope … Good luck!!

Yes, if you get stamped zeal in his passport of travelling few countries and provide financial sponsorship from parents just enough for his stay, they would have considered. But don't lose hope. May be next time he would def. Get it.

I never realised how strict the UK immigration was until we started doing Lahiru's visa! It's shocking that many people are unable to have the freedom of travelling where they wish, especially if they have the supporting documents, they are still refused!

Not really true. I have waited months sometimes for a visa to enter certain African countries. For Angola, eight months. On the other hand, millions try to enter wealthier countries and remaining beyond the expiration of the visa, ie. Illegally, is not at all uncommon. It is estimated that over one million people are illegally living in the UK.

Anyone who loves and adopts street dogs has got to be a good person.. I have 10 and do what I can to help street dogs like vaccination, sterilization and helping car accident victims or sick dogs.. What you said here is not entirely true. This is actually having to do with Sri Lanka NOT with UK. If Sri Lanka modernize and recognize Common-Law Partnerships, Lahiu and Lucie would be united. In countries like UK, Canada, Australia, etc, you do NOT need to be married to get a visa for your partner. You need to establish "Common-Law Partnership". I can actually have a Sri Lankan long term girlfriend and bring her to Canada without ever getting married because Common-Law Partnership is recognized in Canada. The issue is Sri Lankan authorities may not do the paperwork for it due to "cultural" or other reasons. It is like how some Sri Lankan laws prevent women from bying alcohol. 🤷‍♀ Also, Luci is only going for a vacation not for a permanent move. She will be back in Sri Lankan in two weeks.

Yes.. Applying for UK Visa is a stressful process.. And for any Sri Lankans it's hard to get accepted for "Obvious Reasons". I was lucky that my first ever visit out of SL was UK. What you could do is, you should show Lahiru will return back showing that he has these properties in his name in SL and some other valuable stuff, and You can marry him and can show he is your Partner etc etc. And to reduce the stress, I did contact the Visa Agencies and got help from them. I Hope, Lahiru can Visit UK in near future when satisfying these. All the best !!

Dear Lucy, It's heart breaking to see that you had to travel alone to UK. But I'm guessing one of the reasons why Lahru's visa might have got rejected could be due to his lack of travel history. Probably you two can travel to easier destinations like singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and UAE etc where visa is so much easier to obtain and by doing so you get Lahiru's travel history filled up so that in the future he gets a better chance to obtain UK visa

this remind me of my Student Visa to UK(birmingham uni) 2005... the waiting start from minute to month.. than received email/letter they wanted me go for interview at England embassy i go there fully suit tie i even study / practice my English when i arrive there(uk embassy in Kuala Lumpur) while waiting everyone dress shirt jeans... haha oh i got my Student visa and completed my undergraduate/postgraduate degree (BA/MA 2005-2010+)

Going through VFS is hectic. sometimes VFS staff will act like as though they are the immigration officers. IF they tell you this doc not need or anything else just tell them to leave it as it is. Just don't listen to them on what docs to keep or take it..

Well the money has to be in the same account for 6 months At least $15.000 . and he could try after 6 months as the biometric will be deleted from the system automatically from the system . To be completely honest with you I do not think will be successful even in the next attempt as they have few points as not having stable job with good income that they think he couldn’t leave for just to stay and struggle to start from zero, and mainly should also have a profession which they accept as profession is not easy to build and won’t leave it for just to stay back in Uk. And they do background check meaning it’s just weather you are rich or not, most cases they eat even go that far they just judge by your appearance sadly.I know it’s not the way to judge people but that’s the truth .and the immigration officer who approved the visa has to face consequences if they approve the visa and someone dose not return so they don’t take risk. I understand they dnt want to spoile carrer of them. This world is not fair and Life is not fair for everyone. But we have to deal with this. I am not trying to disappoint you or give negative energy but I just told you the reality. Anyway I am wishing you the all the luck to have visa next time. Tc

Hi Lucie, both I and my wife were to attend my graduation and her conference in Birmingham last month but both our visas got refused despite we had strong financial backing, assets, and sponsorships. We both opened a case in that regard and hoping the UK Home Office will grant us justice. Don't give up, he is your fiance and he should get his visa soon ! I am currently trying to get a visa for my Sri Lankan partner to come to New Zealand and it is hard work and such an emotional roller coaster... should be excited but really just terrified it will be refused for some reason... i felt your pain but at least you know you will be back with your darling in two weeks... Lucie I’m so sorry that you have to leave lahiru behind.. When you’re back in Sri Lanka. Make sure you get married to him. Atleast you’ll have the marriage certificate as proof of your relationship to the embassy. That’ll solve part of the visa issue. Also, start saving (or putting) some money in his account as well..
