They were one of the biggest bands in the world in the mid 80s and their fifth album Brothers in Arms sold over 30 million copies. The songwriter is Mark Knopfler and he's also the lead guitarist. He has just released a charity single with over 50 of the best musicians on the planet. The single is called Going Home and he's raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK and Teen Cancer America. The video for it is incredible!!

Mark Knopfler wrote this song while touring in the US, they were driving down "Telegraph Road" in Detroit and he was reading a book called "The growth of the soil" at the time and he combined the 2 in this song. But there are many more great songs Mark wrote dor Dire Straits and also as a solo artist.

Hi, this is the second reaction of yours that I've watched. I'm 54 and I've been a huge DS fan since I was 15. Alchemy Live was my first vinyl. They were born in 1977 in the suburbs of London when Mark Knopfler (the singer) moved from Newcastle to his brother's house, which he shared with John Illsley (the bassist). DS was born there. In this live show, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1983, Hal Lindes plays on rhythm guitar, replacing Mark's brother David Knopfler in the original line-up, who left the band in 1980 due to musical differences, Alan Clark on keyboards and piano and Terry Williams on drums, here in his first experience with the DS having replaced the original drummer that year. It is above all thanks to his influence that the live performance has a very different rhythm compared to the original recording. He rewrote some great drum parts. The performance is incredible. Just think about the fact that at the time there were no sequences, bases, clicks... everything played completely live. I found your reactions very pleasant... if you want to continue getting to know DS a little, I recommend some excerpts from their live show "On the night - Live" (which I witnessed in person in 1993). In particular the songs "Calling Elvis", "On every street", "Your latest trick", "Romeo & Juliet". And then again from Alchemy Live in 1983 "Once upon a time in the west" and "Love over gold". And finally their most poignant song "brothers in arms". Sorry for going on, but when it comes to DS... enjoy listening.

Thank you for covering such a great song! I've been playing guitar for years, and just recently started working on parts of this song. Another great song to cover would be a band I really don't like, but this song is sick! Rolling Stones, can't you hear me knocking. It starts out with an incredible guitar riff, then vocals come ripping in, then there's a 4½ minute jam session led by a saxophone! It's incredible! If you watch Keith Richards play the opening riff, he barely moves him fret hand, it's crazy. Okay, thank you for the great videos!

Once read a quote from someone in Rolling Stones who said they went to California thinking it would be an awesome music place, but everyone was just druggies. Not that they didn't do drugs, but they loved music & what they did. They didn't get that feeling from LA & SF areas. Was ready to disagree, but no. They were correct about the time they went there.

It’s such an honour and is so exciting watching people’s first time seeing these performances, especially songs from this iconic show. This is the absolute peak in rock music before money started effing with it. Watch this entire show if you like wat you’re hearing. Mark Knopfler is my favourite guitarist because it often sounds like his guitar is plugged into his heart. He’s actually a left handed guitarist but his dad could only afford a right handed starter guitar. So he adapted. He also never uses a pick to play, just his fingers which is extremely rare. This particular concert from London features his brother on rhythm guitar (shorter blonde hair) and Alan Clark on keyboards who stayed with the band for a while. That’s enough from me. Dire Straits are my favourite band period. I envy you as you have so much more to watch and listen to for the first time. Enjoy!

Inspired after Mark Knopfler was on a tour bus in Michigan travelling along the Telegraph Road. He was also reading a novel called Growth of the soil which is about how industrial progress conflicts with a peaceful life in tune with nature. eg “Then came the churches then the came the schools then came the lawyers then came true rules.” He decided to put the two together to tell a story of how a dirt track turns into an Industrial City which then goes into decline causing despair and misery. “Id like to go to work but they shut it all down.” A lyrical and musical masterpiece and one the of the best live performances ever, for me.

The chemistry between the entire band was breathtaking that Time .I would rank Mark Knopfler among Unic's top guitarists, there is no way to copy that style. Left hand like Jimi but playing righthand 3-Fingerstyle , singing like Bob Dylan but different . What a treasure of musical creativity was given to us by God's grace at this time. Unique, epic, enchanting, harmonious and full of dreams that needed to be lived. Even Mozart would have enjoyed their way of telling a story with harmonies.
