100%. I’ve been in Hell on Earth. A place in your mind and soul where you have no hope, feel no love, have no purpose. This level of depression I wouldn’t wish on even my worst enemy. Death was a reprieve. I’ve already come to terms with death. Going back to that place, the pit of despair, the dark place with no hope, with no God…. I never, ever want to go back there.

Heaven is not discussed in the Torah, in order to emphasize the necessity to do what's right because it's right, and not for the reward, or to avoid punishment. - Rabbi Menachem Weiman
@matthayes533
@matthayes533 Жыл бұрын
That is an interesting insight. I like it. But it makes one wonder where they thought Enoch went when he was caught up or where they thought Isaiah was talking about in Isaiah 40:22, or what Solomon was speaking of when he dedicated the temple. I'm guessing the Rabbi did not mean to say heaven wasn't discussed because it clearly is, but rather that it wasn't the specific reward for those who kept the law. And Christians don't believe that either, we don't believe anyone is able to keep the law, that's the whole point of Jesus.
@waitstill7091
@waitstill7091 Жыл бұрын
@@matthayes533 This quote was taken from an AISH article, where the Rabbi gives a Jewish view of Heaven and Hell. Here is another excerpt: "From Jewish tradition, a different viewpoint emerges starting with the fact that there doesn't exist the concept of everlasting damnation and torture. The Almighty's justice is not served by punishing someone forever. Justice means the punishment fits the crime. Since we are finite and our sins are finite, then our punishment or atonement must be finite." The Rabbi said heaven is not discussed in the Torah (First five books of Moses) and he's right. Enoch being taken by God is hardly a discussion on heaven. "24And Enoch walked with God, and he was no longer, for God had taken him." Genesis 5:24 This means the Torah refutes the Christian presuppositions of Heaven, since God never emphasized the necessity to do right on reward of heaven, or fear of hell.

@@waitstill7091 If there is no heaven, where did God take Enoch? We can at least infer that Enoch was removed from Earth and enjoyed a genuinely positive existence elsewhere in God's presence. What is Heaven if not that? To say otherwise is to imply that God killed Enoch for being good. This is not the place for this discussion but I thank you for your wisdom and for sharing the wisdom of this Rabbi. In regards to your comment about hell and the punishment fitting the crime, you are forgetting a key point of crime and punishment. If I lie to you, you can do nothing to me - you have no authority over me, if I lie to my parents they might send me to my room, If I lie to my government or to a judge I might be put in jail. It's the same crime, but the punishment increases based on the level of authority a person has over me. How much greater would the punishment be if I lie to someone who has infinite and perfect authority over me? I wish you well on your journey and pray that God continues to draw you closer to Him. You have the last word, but if you ask a question I will answer out of respect to you.

@@matthayes533 Question: "How much greater would the punishment be if I lie to someone who has infinite and perfect authority over me?" We know He will continue to keep His promises, because He is God and not a man. 27And God created man in His image....31And God saw all that He had made, and behold it was very good... 7Is it not so that if you improve, it will be forgiven you? Really? Where is your evidence that a 3,000 year old rabbi died on a piece of plywood specifically to ease your guilty conscience? Where is your evidence that this man even existed at all, let alone spontaneously rose from the dead after 3 days, a physically and biologically impossible feat to accomplish. Isn't it a little narcissistic to think that someone did, let alone should have, died so that you could stop fretting about your personal mistakes and you could avoid taking responsibility for your own actions. In what world is it even close to coherent, sane, or just to think that a man, whose existence is dubious anyway, who died in antiquity can magically absolve you and people who think like you of responsibility and consequences for your actions and you and people who think like you can magically transfer your guilt and the consequences of your actions onto this fictional character mentioned in a 3,000 year old book written by barely literate peasents? The idea of "Christ dieing for my sins" is nothing more than shifting the burden abandoning personal responsibility, denying reality, ignoring the truth, and lacking the courage to face the consequences of the actions you took and the decisions you personally made. Christianity, and all religion, is a scam, through and through. It is a sad pathetic little story people cling to in order to avoid the cold, hard reality of life in the world, a fantasy that serves as a mental escape , with no basis in truth whatsoever.

There is no such thing as "sin". It is all part of the great scam of Christianity, and no one need "repent" of an error they did not cause or a wrong they did not commit. Jesus F-ing Christ, stop preaching and droning on about incoherent nonsense from a 3,000 year old fairytale, grow up, and realize that hell is a fictional place, god is a fictional being, and nothing will be lost if you are separated from a fantasy when you die. We only stop sinning as a result of that trust in our hopeless condition. Our repentance is not work but fruit that works. Faith without works is dead. But works without faith is dead too. We listen to Gods commandments because we hate our sin and love God and want to be like him. Repentance is the fruit of trusting in Jesus. Two sides to the same coin. It’s just important to know that your efforts to run from sin don’t save you. Trusting in God saves you. And that helps you run from sin.

In mystical states people can see other realities and even listen to the thoughts of others but Hell is something that goes back in time as something seen and actual. Hell is another realm which is superimposed onto our own due to choices we make which go against our internalized values, and to get out of the flames you have to follow your moral compass through thick or thin no matter how much suffering it causes you. I've come to think of it as sum of total suffering induced vs just your own. This is what I've come to believe at least. Take care everyone this really triggered some particle of deep set truth in my soul.

There are days that I think that a person might pass on suicide one day, exist for 20 mores worthless years of suffering and then die anyway. And maybe nobody cares anyway. But maybe it was just 20 extra years of suffering that he could have passed on. Some days I think there is still a chance that I may begin to have a life worth the living of it, starting now, if I can get it together

God Bless you both. It fascinates me how many accidents do not happen. We can focus on the terror of the accidents OR we can notice all the accidents that don't happen. There are so many. I have screwed up driving. I have failed to pay attention to the car ahead of me properly. I have failed to check my blind spot perfectly. I have lost concentration as I made a turn. I managed to NOT get in an accident. I have watched people driving onto the freeway while reading a book. Everyone seems to drive around the idiot. But that doesn't get eyeballs. Blood gets eyeballs.

...you're contemplating from a level of consciousness that's quite high, aren't you? Initially, we're just not wired to focus that much on abstract thoughts, concepts etc. (overall "the inside world"). We have to focus on the outside first, because averting damage has to come first. Turning more and more inwards needs to be learned - even for more introvert people. Don't get me wrong: I agree with you! I'm just pointing out that we need to educate ourselves AND each other in order to develop the abilities necessary to act in the way you proposed.

When he said he was always reminded of the finitude of life when he was younger but also at this very moment, that struck me because that's similar to my life and I'm just 30. From age of 20 I feel chased by time, and I feel very guilty and ashamed when I have unproductive days. I'm way too conscious about my short life on Earth than I would like to, to the point of obsessively planning too ambitious goals in advance but still worrying execcssively about my future with every step i take. This created so much anxiety and perfectionism resulting in inaction. As a philosopher I think too much abstractly and do too little practically. In the last 12 months i have been thinking a lot about ways to extend human life and i can't seem to let it rest. I desperately want to leave a mark on this Earth before I go but can't figure out how exactly. It's probably not healthy but this is just how i am. I don't understand how people cannot be worried about their purpose on life, all the time. I feel as if I'm cursed.

''You're more likely to die terribly if you live in a manner that brings you to hell''. - Jordan Peterson That quote rings so very true as a consistent truth for people who study history and psychiatry. The Bible even warned about people living by the sword also dying by it. It’s a cosmic truth that people who bathe in evil or soul deteriorating things are corrupted by it and lose everything of value in the process. It leaves you open to all manner of violence and sorrow. It reminds me of Josh Billing’s famous quote. "It is a statistical fact that the wicked work harder to reach hell than the righteous do to enter heaven.”

I watch movies. It is getting harder and harder to watch. In order to make a movie happen, the author has to force me to suspend my disbelief. I realized just how dangerous this was a long time ago. I was watching "Pirates of the Caribbean". My second viewing of it with friends for some reason triggered me. Jack and his Sparring partner were walking along the bottom of the ocean with a boat tipped on their head. I was into it. "O that's a good idea". I graduated in Mechanical Engineering. I had to study hydrodynamics. I had to study fluid dynamics. I have a solid background in WHY DO BOATS FLOAT!. I was accepting two characters walking with a boat over their heads with air to the GUNNELS. I had two people smarter than me on the couch. I turned to them and said "Apparently that boat never floated!" "What do you mean!" "Why do boats float?!" They were also taken in. A little tiny thing like that worms its way into your brain and you accept it as true. SMART people accept these things. Only later, maybe, you discover that fallacious concept and get rid of it. It is a slippery thing. But then we have the story of Pinnochio and the Whale. ... And I have to stop and not be so cynical. Somewhere between surviving being eaten by a whale and using an upturned boat as an Air Supply lies a line. WHERE IS THE LINE? I don't have an answer. People can be cruel to an extreme. At the same time, the most evil tyrant can take pity on anyone. How do we balance the perception? Never completely turn off your brain.

Knowing that evil exists in this world can be scary because we aren’t sure what or the type of things to come after death. But just as I know how blissful it felt as a child and how things make so much sense when things are good in life, i can’t be too worried of the afterlife because it seems like good prevails no matter what

3:59 That is not what Nietzsche said. The original quote is "Wer mit Ungeheuern kämpft, mag zusehn, daß er nicht dabei zum Ungeheuer wird." which translates to "He who battles with monsters should take heed not to become a monster himself while doing so.". Les lyrical, but more accurate. Translating it as "battle not" makes it a direct advice not to engage in the battle in the first place. That's quite a significant difference from the actual quote, which doesn't advice to not engage in the battle nor does it state the becoming of a monster as a certainty. Granted, I am missing the larger context of the quote, but it seemed significant enough to point out.

I was about 6/7 watching my Dad sleep, first came this fear, what would happen if he dies? Then the reality of my own immortality surfaced at that moment and I think about it everyday, not in a morbid way, it helps me feel grateful. I also carry the fear of hell, however I just keep pressing on, trying to get to heaven before he closes the door...🙏

Hell doesn’t make any sense to me. Why would you get tortured for all eternity for not believing in a God, that’d be an incredibly evil thing to do to humanity. Hell is most certainly a concept used to keep citizens in line back in the old days.

We can not enter heaven by any of our works only by the grace of God through Jesus Christ his son can we attain eternal life. John 14:6, John 3:16 and so many other verses show us how we can be confident in our eternal destination by trusting that Jesus paid for our sins on the cross, that He is the son of God and that He rose from the dead.

@@MonroeSim I am not here to argue, i also struggled with this concept until I started understanding God's character. He doesn't wish for anyone to perish but He also knows that He wants people to come willingly to him. If He did not punish sin, He would not be just. Just like if a judge of our own never passed down judgment on the guilty, he would not be a good judge. It would be easy to explain away hell or to try and just not think its real but Jesus talked way to much about it for me to dismiss it. Some truths are very hard to accept.

@@MonroeSim Not for not believing in a God, but for being unrighteous. If there’s a God He has to be the supreme justice, all the wrongs we have done have to be judged fairly, and there’s a place for the damned. But God in His love and kindness has provided a way to make you righteous, someone already died for you and took all your unrighteousness upon Himself and went to hell so that you wouldn’t have to pay. If you accept Him, It’s fair for God not to send you to hell, because someone went there for you, but if you refuse you have to pay for your unrighteousness, because all unrighteousness have to be paid for. And the one who paid for you is Jesus Christ. That’s why we call Him the Savior. We do the same thing here on earth, you have to pay for every crime you commit according to the law.

@@MonroeSim There’s a law in your heart, and every time you violate that law, you violate the law God put in your heart. You know when you do something wrong because God wrote that law in you. That’s why people feel guilty after they did something wrong.

Please think about this and don't be deceived by the devil who would love for you to follow him to death in hell and stay with him there for eternity. Hell, called the lake of fire in the Word of God, is very real and Jesus Christ spoke about it very often. The curse of sin, is death. The very real place of hell (the eternal lake of fire) is why Jesus Christ came into this world to die on the cross. Because of His great love for us, His creation, He died on the cross and shed His blood to pay the penalty for all of our personal sins and rebellion against Him. After His death He descended into Hades, and on the 3rd day He was resurrected from the grave and was seen by His disciples and above 500 others, before His ascension into heaven. Having victory over the grave (the curse of sin), the living Christ is now seated at the right hand of God the Father until He returns to make all of His enemies as footstools for His feet. He died so that all who believe in Him would live, being made a new creature with a new life here on earth, and the promise of life eternal in heaven with Him (born-again by the Spirit into God's family). Do not reject Christ Jesus who loved His enemies so much that He died to save us all from the punishment of Almighty God for our sins and eternal damnation in hell, which is the lake of fire. This life is just but a moment. Eternity is forever. Make the right choice! Jesus Christ PAID it all for us! Only BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved! ❤✝ Matthew 5, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 16:18, Mark 9:43, Luke 16:23, 1 Thessalonians 1:10, 2 Thess 2:7-10, John 3, John 18-21, Romans 3-8, 1 Corinthians 15, Ephesians 2, Revelation 1 and 19:20, 20:10-15.

I counted my days as early as 4 years of age. I recall vividly thinking, "ok, I've got how many out of 100 left to live;" Lol to the fact young me presumed making it 100 years. But my great grandpa did make it to 102. His daughter, my blessed grandma who lives a room down from me, is 96 I believe. She doesn’t like to specify, could be higher. However, she has the same mental edge as the woman I knew at 60. I hope I go her way unlike both my grandpas who died with dementia. EVERYDAY when I was 8 I spent hours upon hours worrying of death. Most particularly, Hell. Hell was on my mind perpetually. As was suicide despite the fact I had an absolute lust for life, didn’t have any depressive qualities. Suicide disgusted me, the idea I could end my life instantaneously was damn scary. I didn’t know I had severe OCD at the time. So I was very much in the dark. Violent imagery and existential dread was compulsive. Wait till puberty and sex comes into the mix.

I noticed that Elon Musk comment too. In my experience, most productive/creative people find themselves in that frame of mind from time to time. Grief, profound grief, will take one there too, as will illness. My aunt, the day before she died, asked to see each of her five children (and her grandchildren), and prior to retiring for the night, she wrote on a piece of paper and left it on her night table. It said: “I’ve had enough.” And she went to sleep and didn’t wake up. I could relate many similar stories. Love and All Good Things, Jess.🌹
