The book is "The Princess Bride," by William Goldman. Presumably it's an abridged, "good parts" version of a novel of the same name by Simon "S." Morgenstern, a native of Florin. In reality, both Florin and S. Morgenstern are fictional. William Goldman also wrote the screenplay. IMO, the movie is better than the book. Inigo Montoya was played by Mandy Patinkin.
@susanzenonian50852 жыл бұрын
I would have loved to see the "Zoo of Death" in live action, but it would have been quite costly to do in the 80's, so the Pit of Despair was a fine substitute. :D For the book, you can still buy it and request the "kissing parts" novella that was "cut" from the orginal from the publisher. The dialogue is just as snappy and entertaining as the movie.
@angoth2 жыл бұрын
There is a long-debated meaning to the 'rushed' feeling of the story. There's no real depth to Florin, Gilder, etc. The implied and debated reason is that the Grandfather skipped over those parts to keep his grandson interested so you the listener only get to hear the best parts of the book.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
@@angoth "Florin" and "Guilder" are real words. The Florin was an Italian gold coin minted during the 13th through 16th centuries. "Guilder" was an anglicization of German "gulden," and meant "gold penny." It is frequently taken to refer to a Florin. And just to make it *really* obvious, in the book the name of the neighboring country is actually spelled "Guilder," not "Gilder." That's pretty much all you need to know about Florin and Guilder. They're two neighboring countries that share a culture (and, presumably, a currency), and Humperdinck's planned war against Guilder is all about money.

When I was a kid, my teacher used to show this film when we had covered all of the material for each week. So, I pretty much memorized the film by the end of that school year. BTW, there is a book AND a kind of, sort of sequel to the book! I've always wanted a sequel to the film to be made. The second book was entitled "THE PRINCESS BRIDE: BUTTERCUP'S BABY" but was never finished before the author died. However, chapters and summaries were available in some later print editions of THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
@pwmel12 жыл бұрын
Actually . . . the second book remained unfinished NOT because the author died, but because he was never satisfied with how the second book was working out. The original was so perfect that nothing seemed to do it justice. Goldman wrote two or three chapters and decided that was that.

Even better, they followed the reading with a Q&A with the cast and the director. My favorite stories involved Billy Crystal's improvisations as Miracle Max. Rob Reiner couldn't stop laughing and ruined every take, so he had to ban himself from the set during those scenes. And Mandy Patinkin hurt his ribs trying to keep from laughing during those same scenes. No injuries from sword fighting on the Cliffs of Insanity, but just listening to Miracle Max? Deadly!
@heinleinreader2 жыл бұрын
@@scapevelocity Monty Python did a great sketch called The Deadly Joke. That is every word out of the mouths of Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and his wife respectively. The only thing that would have made it more difficult for people, imagine Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters and Jack Black on the set with them as well. That Quintet would have created conditions such that it would be virtually impossible to finish any scene. Add in Julie Kavner, Tracey Ullman, Hank Azaria, Yeardley Smith and Tom Hanks and you would have had what would become the greatest collection of improvisational comics in history. Of course not all ten were at the peak of their careers, but I would have dearly loved to see a scene with those ten, even with John Lithgow and Steve Martin to make an even dozen.

William Goldman actually wrote the screenplay and then made it into a book. Goldman has written a few very good films like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "All the President's Men" (based on the Watergate scandal and the investigation into Nixon by reporters Woodward and Bernstein), and the edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller "Marathon Man" (Roy Scheider from "Jaws" co-stars). As I mentioned in the "Jaws" thread, you would REALLY like "When Harry Met Sally" since you loved this film as it is directed and co-written by Rob Reiner who directed "The Princess Bride." It stars Billy Crystal who played Miracle Max here, besides Meg Ryan and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia from Star Wars). It has the same kind of dry wit. @@melenatorr I realize the book came out first, but Goldman had been kicking around the screenplay for some time. He was at a loss as to what direction to go with it, so he came out with the book version. You can also tell because "Bride" has many of the same witticisms that Reiner is known for. It helps that Rob Reiner's father was the well known comedic actor and writer, Carl Reiner. Comedy is in their blood. Rob also played Meathead on "All in the Family."

The author of the novel and screenwriter William Goldman wrote this after asking his young daughters what kind of story they wanted read to them before bed. One wanted a story about a princess, and the other wanted a story about a bride. That was the inspiration of the story. Goldman also wrote a book about screenwriting and the business of Hollywood called, 'Adventures in the Screen Trade' in which he said the most honest thing about Hollywood and the people who make movies. "Nobody knows anything." I guess a guy who won two screenwriting Oscars and made a lot of successful films would know that.

7:22 Even more amazing that Inigo spent his life training, while Wesley has only been doing it for 5 years.

The threat of imminent death at any moment is a great motivator.

Yes, but Wesley is protected by plot armor, which is crafted of the finest mithril, beskar, adamantium, Valyrian steel, and vibranium.

Inigo fell out of practice a touch as he was losing hope in finding Count Rugen. So that’s one potential advantage. Wesley was also more acrobatic than Inigo so he had some advantages. Really it came down to endurance as you saw Inigo tiring near the end. So multiple factors, but still Inigo is the better swordsman, just not the winner of the duel.

Terminator is indeed worth seeing, as is its sequel. Iconic, but nothing like this movie. I adore The Princess Bride.

A VERY excellent and entertaining reaction, Aria! Truly superb! This is one of my favorite movies which I come back to again and again and again. I sang in and choreographed sword fights in the operetta PIRATES of PENZANCE, so naturally, I threw in an "I am not left handed" element into the fight. = ) If you want to continue in a more uplifting vein, watch ROCKY before TERMINATOR.

The actor who played Inigo, Mandy Patinkin, lost his father in real life to cancer. So during his big fight scene, he imagined he was killing the cancer that took his father.
