💡Pair this running lead with this rig: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKOXoZSLaqeSqJY 💡Here's the list of components for this rig: amzn.to/3PvVCc2 Maybe you’re wondering why I’ve paired this Fox run ring and this Nash Heli sleeve together when there are already so many running lead options out there. Well, the standard setups I’ve tested work… in some places, but they all have limitations. This is the only setup that I can take anywhere: a silty estate lake, a large rocky reservoir or a flowing river. I can use it with a leader or rig tubing and I can pull the rig free if the lead gets stuck. For me, it’s the only setup that ticks all the boxes. Having just one setup that I can take anywhere is a massive advantage. It’s one thing less to think about 😊

This is great! I only use a running lead, rarely get tangles but, in windy conditions or if I lose sight of the lead in flight, I am almost guaranteed a tangle 20% of the time. This will really help me avoid those tangles.

Loving your videos and working my way back through them and putting some into use! Not related to this video but I tied up some of the heavy “anti tangle” mono rigs, the ones with the blow black tubing holding the knotless knot tight, for a social! My twist was to tie a micro swivel onto the hair instead of a loop ( I suppose a rig ring would work too) then bait floss to tie on smaller boilies etc stops any risk of splitting them!

I was using a lead clip system many years ago that was a conventional lead clip system, and by adding another component it coverts it into a run rig system. Can not remember where I got then, or who made them, but still have some don't use them now as they are about a 3rd of the size of a conventional lead clip.

I've used a very similar rig for years now, coming to broadly the same conclusions you have and getting to pretty much the same end point. Slightly different way of achieving the same result. I use a standard Bank tackle short buffer bead with a quick change swivel pushed into it. the BT run rings (same as the ones you use) will actually push over the swivel eye inside the buffer bead and 'lock' into place. Instead of relying on the running rig breaking I instead use the breakaway C clips which come in two sizes and break at 4lb and 8lb. TBF I don't do much big chuck casting and haven't needed stronger clips. The only time I haven't got on well with this running setup is in really heavy weed, I found the lead stayed put while the fish charge through weed and can give a very odd angle to the line and fish and in that rare circumstance i would use a lead clip and drop the lead. Maybe 1% of my fishing and this running style I use for literally all but heavy weed.

I understand the run ring as a safety feature as it breaks at 10lb of pressure but in terms of making the rig free running most leads these days come with big eye swivels. Their pretty much the same size as a run ring anyway. Surely just sliding one up the line and using thick hooklengths (0.35mm upwards) would give you great bite detection and a anti tangle rig anyway. Minus the break away if stuck in rocks or weed.

Far be it for me to question your Rigs, you make great videos. For tying off on Swivels and links i prefer the Sandiago Double Jam as a Knot. The use of the SDJ affords virtually all of the lines breaking strain to be relied on. It is in tests the strongest Knot. I wouldn't use it for the Hook for Carp, but it certainly gives better breaking strain under preassure. Many Knots, you will loose between 12- 20% of the lines test, but not with the double jam.

Matt, as I said before, I tried this rig today for a short session on my local runs water, worked great, 11 runs, 11 fish, all hooked perfectly, combined with the d-rig with the nylon line instead of a bait screw. I did tie the rig with the small bead included, as I usually do not fish weedy waters, every time the bead was just nipped on, and every time it was dislodged with the initial run. Do you think that the bead could act similar to the nylon on your previous shock and run rig? I also tied the rig with flurocarbon hook link, which I use for most of my fishing, it worked perfectly. Once again, thanks for sharing these rigs, truly first class.👍

Hi. When sea fishing over rough ground I’ve used a rotten bottom rig, so if the weight snags you loose the weight and not snap the main line. Same principle could be used here. Any running rig with the weight tied onto the run ring with 8lb line then this will be the weakest part of the rig. Of course antsy strength line could used to prevent crack offs for the heavier weight cast just a bit further. This could also be used on heli rigs your thoughts

I get where you're coming from, but there's a more fundamental reason that I've been fishing with running leads for the last 14 years, and that's because they are more effective than lead clips, I catch more carp on running rigs than lead clips, if you want to know why, I've done this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZzdkp-tf9qbZsU

I cast this system 90m and it works perfectly so you’ll have no issue at 100m with a bait boat unless it’s weedy. It’s only when you get to 150m that you might be better off dumping the lead on the take 👍

@@danielfabricius128 This system will work with tubing, a leader or nothing at all. My choice would depend on the rules and the nature of the venue. At 100m the tubing has zero effect on the line lay but it would add some abrasion resistance and protects the flanks of the fish.

@matthewcollins Really love your videos; very practical and a simple approach (which seems the opposite to lots of others who seem to be overcomplicating things). One question; with a running lead system, there is no weight to initially set the hook which there is on a fixed lead system, so what is the benefit of the running rig (except stopping the carp using the weight to throw the lead?)
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 4 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, glad you’re enjoying the channel. Running rigs offer 3 main benefits: you get better bite indication, they are more effective than lead clips as the carp can’t throw the hook and you don’t lose the lead which is better for your wallet and the environment. With a running rig, I don’t use the lead to hook the fish. The line, the rod and the reel all work together to hook the carp. It’s the elasticity of mono and the tightness of the clutch that do the hooking for me. I always fish with a semi tight clutch because the carp is hooked and under control before I touch the rod. Cheers, Matt
@markdixon7202
@markdixon7202 4 ай бұрын
@matthewcollinsangler Thanks Matt. All makes sense. I suppose when I think of a running lead system im thinking of it almost being freelined, so they feel no resistance, but do like the idea of the carp not being able to throw the hook using the lead. Cheers.

So when using tubing you tube the mainline and connect the whole to the rig? There is no leader involved? And when using leader there is no tubing involved? But how can that be anti-tangle? Perhaps you can explain this? Also, perhaps some diagrams would be nice? When to use tubing vs leader material? Thanks for answering in advanced...
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 4 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes if you want to use rig tubing, just thread the mainline through the rig tubing and then through the run ring, add the heli sleeve and then tie on a size 8 swivel. Leaders are complicated because there are different types. If I’m using a lead free material like Nash cling-on then that replaces the rig tubing. For long cast casting and when river carping I’ll use 5m of 30lb (0.50) or 40lbs (0.60) mono snag leader and I fish that straight to the running lead system, without tubing because it’s all I need. This setup is also known as fishing naked. It works fine like this but on some waters this configuration would be banned. I know that rig tubing is also known as anti tangle tubing but for me, this is a complete misnomer. If you get your rig design or the materials choice wrong, your rigs will tangle and anti tangle tubing is not going to prevent this. Most day ticket waters will insist on rig tubing and leaders will be banned so that’s where I’d advise you start. We have more videos on leaders in the pipeline. Cheers, Matt

Does the tubing get disconnected from the sleeve because of the hard casts and the elasticity of mainline? I didnt se you put medium sinkers before the tubing. You used those sinkers in previous running rig systems. I use running rig systems with tubing and with those plastic rings you put lead on and i use sinkers (as tubing stopers). Little problem (just annoying one) is that sinkers after the casts get separated from tubing ang tubing comes off from sleeve. Also i think sinkers as stopers are good because they prevent tubing from sliding off on mainline. Tubing protect the carp during the fight and tubing must be just beside the hooklink
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 3 ай бұрын
I found that the Nash heli sleeve holds onto standard 0.75mm tungsten rig tubing very tightly. In fact you really do need to cut the tubing at 45 degrees to get it to go in. I’ve only had to use the sinker trick at the top of rig tubing before because a standard tail rubber does not grip the rig tubing well enough. I’ve never had the tubing pop out in any situation 👍

Quick question. You put up a video of the Nash Lead Run Clip quite a while ago and after watching it I have used them loads. I notice they don't feature in your fishing (or at least on your videos) Do you still rate them or do you prefer the inline lead (running & Bump n run). If so, why? Thanks Jason

Hi Jason, I fished with the Nash run clip for a year and it taught me a lot. I’d use it more if I fished weedy waters or if I fished 150yds+. I don’t need to drop the lead on the waters I fish and the Nash run clip tends to drop the lead too often for me. The setup in this video has a breakaway element which means that I can pull for a break if the lead gets stuck on the bottom and recover the rig. So it’s all about what is appropriate for the waters you fish. Cheers, Matt

i see danny fairbrass say that an inline lead will hook the carp faster and more aggresively due to picking the lead up at the heavier side, do you agree with this and what are your general thoughts on using inline leads (not in a solid bag)
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 5 ай бұрын
The weight of the lead comes into effect quicker on an inline lead than on a swivel lead but I’m not using this small force to hook the carp. I only use running leads and it’s the elasticity of the mono and the semi tight clutch that do the hooking for me. It delivers far more hooking force than the weight of the lead. I like inline leads for short to medium range work, casting, bait boat, bushwacker and I always use an inline lead with a supple braided hooklink.

Hi mate, first, I don't use fluoro in my fishing at all, it's not necessary. I mostly use mono from 0.35 to 0.60 depending on where I'm fishing, and it works over every bottom type. I don't worry about which way the fish approaches a mono rig because the mono is light enough and supple enough to fly up into the carp's mouth from any angle (unlike fluoro which is too stiff) 😊 PS - sorry to hear about the adverts, I don't control the amount of adverts that are shown to you.

Hi Matt. Do you fish slack lines with this lead system?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 4 ай бұрын
Hi mate, running rigs can be fished with a tight line, back leads, semi slack or fully slack line. What’s important is a semi tight clutch. I’m using the clutch and the elasticity of the mono to hook the fish. If you use a running rig with a loose clutch, you won’t hook the carp and they can be gone by the time you get to the rod.

@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 5 ай бұрын
There’s no doubt carp are caught on lead clips and that they work. But with a semi fixed lead the carp can use the lead to throw the rig out (I know it’s happening because I’ve got a ‘telltale’ indicator on my rig telling me I’ve been ejected) and I’ve seen it happen in my fishing when I used to use lead clips and with many anglers at my lake (they now all fish running leads). If you want to know why and how running rigs are more effective than lead clips, you’ll need to watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZzdkp-tf9qbZsU. You’ll see that if you fish running rigs with a semi tight clutch, the carp is hooked and under control before you even touch the rod. Hope that helps.
