I’m a karate fanboy, but i gotta agree. It can be quick and sneaky to the head, but it doesn’t thump hard enough to punish the body. I guess it might be okay sometimes if you’re willing to risk using the ball of the foot (tougher to aim, easy to hurt yourself).

I learned to do a front leg roundhouse or flip kick as we called it back in the day. We used weapon first technique, with much more hip action than you show as well as a slide on the standing leg if you need a little more distance. Our primary target was the groin which was (as hard as it is to believe) a legal target in open tournaments. Regardless, it's a great, very fast self-defense technique IMO. Your last technique is the closest, but we had the foot and lower leg moving before raising the knee and twisting the hip.

I do really like tonuse this kick, but my goal with it is not to do damage. I use it as a jab, to cover distance and set up other strikes, especially a cross. Its like a jab to the body: not a particularly damaging strike, but I can do enough damage to get the person to react to it.

You can just lift your front leg, pivot your back leg's heel, aim the kick to the head, then kick. That's it, no switching, no sliding and yet still full of power. If you're unclear, have a look at WonderBoy channel, he explained how that'd work.

Sure agree! Would like to add that the last one, that need most training to master, you need the "thai" stans with your hip against you opponent to be able to "lock" your hip and get power in it. If you like to skip your front leg i like to minimize the skip to not telegraph the kick.

Great points as always. There is however an easy way to add a ton of power to the slide up front kick. With just a small adjustment of hips and little bit of rotation. Almost no loss of speed but massive power increase. It’s been my second favourite kick for over 30yrs now :) And still flies up quick despite passage of time hehe
@aaronamour61018 ай бұрын
I fully agree with everything you are saying in this video but I'd say that the Karate Style lead leg kick can be incredibly useful to stop aggressive boxers from coming in. It's so easy and quick to catch someone in the head with when they throw aggressive boxing combos whilst moving in on you. It also makes people super cautious about you lifting that leg so it makes that fake work much better than it would otherwise.

I find it pretty useful to the leg as a way to cover distance and interrupt the opponents rhythm, it’s also pretty good to set up something more substantial by opening a combo with it or by showing it and then feinting with it. Even if someone doesn’t respect it most people will still address it in some way. Throwing it naked doesn’t do too much though I agree.

A variant i've seen is the triangle kick where you stab the ball of the foot/the toes into the opponenets body. The most famous example i can think of is Masaaki Noiri finishing Rukiya Anpo with it. There is also a video on Hideaki Yamazaki's channel where Noiri talks about setting it up with a left hook to the head to expose the body.

Very simple, all you need to do is commit your hips into the kick and follow through. Snap Kicks are for Point Fighting (which has it's place). Practice on the bag, don't reject it just because it looks weak. You can definitely get power from a shorter windup, look at Boxers generating KO/TKOs with Hooks to the Face or Body.

@@npsavat6799 they are used mostly in clinch situations. Dismissing this kick because it doesn't have a lot of power is almost like dismissing the jab for the same reason. all alternatives are good and they AREN'T at all that different. But if he could take the mentality he already has when it comes to hooks to other techniques he would literally be freed to be WAY better. “Before I learned the art, a punch was just a punch, and a kick, just a kick. I was always wondered why the sliding/pendulum front round kicks always feel like the lack power when compared to just a standing in place front round kick. I wonder if there is a certain way to get the hips more loaded for more power or maybe have more of a penetrative drive. Sanda or Savate probably has an answer.
@juanmoralesvideo8 ай бұрын
I'm new in Muay Thai. The standard Muay Thai switch then left leg roundhouse don't work for me because I telegraph it so badly. I found "by accident" the 'step with the right foot then left roundhouse' while chasing my partner. It works a little better. (Excuse my bad English).

Kickboxing is a martial art created through collaboration between Japanese karate masters and a Taekwondo master 구판홍 who practiced mixed martial arts in 1968, called “king tu gi”. If one trains in Taekwondo up to the black belt level and then practices boxing for several years, they will be able to confidently face most opponents in striking competitions.

Pretty sure you can get more power simply by following through instead of snapping back. The only reason Karate guys snap back is for Point Fighting. Sensei Seth's Lead Leg Roundhouse is very powerful and you were in one of his videos with Icy Mike where they debate Pendulum Step vs Slide. Switch Kicks are definitely effective, but they still telegraph. A regular Rear Leg Roundhouse kick is more effective because it's faster, more powerful and very easy to learn. Remember, Lead Leg kicks are more of a Jab especially the Side Kick but can still be trained to be Powerful to stun or potentially KO

No power, superfoot enters the chat. You are really missing the one big advantage of the slide up roundhouse, the knee position is the same as the sidekick and hook kick. Any of the 3 can be thrown with the same extension of the leg. This gives the option of landing the kick where the opening presents itself and it givea the advantage of creating openings. That has always been a pretty big advantage of the lead leg kicks. It also has the advantage of throwing multiple kicks off the same leg. Real effective on people that are not used to double kicks.
