Dennis, my grandfather was a professional woodworker and you are correct sir back into those days 60’s and 70’s, even before that, every thing had to be perfect. I helped him build furniture, round tables, bridle boxes, repair chair rounds and so on. I think the rat rod popularity has changed the thinking of what’s “cool” in hot rods. Personally I like your design and respect your concept of this build it’s absolutely stunning,You do you!

That truck is like you. one of a kind and very etraordanary. Thank you so much Dennis for sharing your talent your builds and knowlage to a younger generation. Really admire you two for your honesty and hard work. Bed looks great! And I agree about borrowing tools. I use to borrow my neighbors backhoe, he was a carpenter and just used it to keep his lake clean. Do everytime i borrowed it I fixed something before returning it. When he died the backhoe was working great, only thing it needed was paint. Sawdust makes pretty good oil dry too!! 😊

Dennis I love your truck I did the same same with my steam Jenny. I know that feeling. Red oak has a beautiful grain. The wood has caracter. I used pecky cypress and used marine on my bed and it came out great. Also built a hope chest for my wife and she loves it. With resin you have to torch the bubbles out. Do shiny. When you final plane it take a light cut. That gives it a great look. Dennis you are unable to make it bad because of character just like the cab. I was a Jack of all trades but master of none. Lol.

When I built furniture and cabinets in the late 80s early 90s we used the saw dust from the wood mixed with wood glue to make filler that would stain and complement the natural look of wood. Something that needed to look clean got a boat patch but thats a lengthy process.

It's wood patina..
@davetitterington6272Ай бұрын
As it sits right now with patina you can drive it, enjoy it, and have fun with it. If you paint it, you might win a few trophies, but you have to wipe the sunshine off with a diaper. If you ever drive it on the street, you'll always be worried about rock chips, door dings, a random scratch. Patina, you can drive it from NYC to LA and smile the whole way.
@kurtbarrett6785Ай бұрын
Your plan for leaving the "imperfections" and prefiling em with epoxy is exactly what I'd do. I had been told and kinda figured wood beds needed to be done in semigloss, so that's the route I went on the first several I did. Then one day, I found myself doing an absolutely gorgeous one made from purpleheart and I forgot to add any flattening agent. That was a beautiful screw-up, since it taught me gloss looks freakin amazing!

I will be ready for tomorrow's video it's Saturday but I'm up early every morning regardless. it looked like the blue truck was on the back of the 53 ready to pull it to California, and I bet it would at that. nice truck Dennis. the best part about any of you folk's videos is the white dog Mika. she is a dandy. thanks Dennis, be waiting for next video.🛻

Dennis I have a sawmill, woodworking is something I do. I love the character of wood, I’ve done pieces in natural as is, trimmed out the soft wood and filled it, and used wood hardener to firm up the spongy. Personally I like to make it solid, but with the character retained. Doing marine epoxy is the right way. If you ever need a wood guy, I am that guy! Love your channel! Peace

Your COE has turned out badass so far. The piece of advice I would give you . With the epoxy you should have built a form for it because you may find that the epoxy is going to run through and not absorb into the wood. But your idea to start with epoxy and filling up all the edges is exactly what you should do I would use tabletop epoxy for that. And then I would continue to use tabletop and you can only go about an eighth of an inch on each side at a time and it has to dry and it could take a couple of days for to dry. But we'll see how it turns out for you I think he'll turn out all right. And the one that you have is very sought after at this point in time just clean up all the stuff that's loose and fill it with a resin to encapsulate it so it doesn't fall out or continue to rot and shrink. As you have stated you were going to do with the casting epoxy. I've never used casting epoxy I would use tabletop epoxy to unloaded absorb into the wood as much as it would absorb and let it dry before you run it through the planer again. And after you run into the planer you take your marina epoxy and coat it or use tabletop epoxy 1/4-in I'm sorry 8 inch of the time on each side and if you want to thicker you'll have to do more than just one pour. Unless the eye turns out I'm sure it'll turn out all right.

You might not be a woodworker but you and Deb figured it out and made it happen. Looks good so far. Learning what NOT to do is the most valuable information and it looks like you worked through some of that and fixed your mistakes along the way. It's really no different from paint and sheet metal work where sometimes you just have to take your time and it takes as long as it takes to get desired results.

My wife and I built a river table out of wood from our local Sierra Nevada. The wood is infamous for the worms that created tracks throughout. It came out pretty cool with the thick resin. I usually coat the ends and cracks with resin without hardener a few hours before using the resin/hardener so as to soak the fibres by wicking action, the reaction of the resin/hardener makes its way into that resin over time so it will harden. It just makes for a better seal against moisture.
