Love that you're getting into making music for your project. That's how I taught myself music as well. A MIDI keyboard made a big difference for me - and knowing some basic music theory. Pick a key, a chord progression in that key, and just like that, you got yourself a musical score.
@mateuscaetano380
@mateuscaetano380 10 ай бұрын
Oh, nice! Could you elaborate on the key and chord progression thing, please? Actually, could you recommend some tutorial to get started? I have a very vague understanding of music theory, just enough to appreciate the musics I like even more but not to make my own lol.
@LukaBelle
@LukaBelle 10 ай бұрын
@@mateuscaetano380 Oh wow, what a question. Good music theory tutorials are hard to find. Most people want to teach you how to read each individual note, so that you can site read, but it's useless in understanding why the notes are where they are. And knowing why the notes are where they are is the most powerful thing. So basically, if you look at a keyboard, if you are in the key of C major, the only keys you touch while playing are the white keys. Everything else is out of bounds. If you play only the white keys, congratulations, you're now playing in the key of C. If you're playing in the key of F major, it's all the same, except the B become B minor. Just look up the scale and you have a picture of the keys you want to play. So each "KEY" has a set of keys that are in bounds and out of bounds. If you play in the keys, you will sound good no matter what. Look up "scales" and you'll find what keys are good, and what keys are bad. So play they keys in the scale and you probably won't mess up. Now each song has a key progression. It's usually something like I-IV-vi-V or I-V-IV-VI. All songs have this. It's roman numerals based on the starting key. That just means that when you make a chord by placing your fingers on every other key (keys 1,3,5, called a major triad, or you can shift the middle one down a step to make it minor), the "One" starts on the first note of the scale(I), or the fifth note(V), or whatever. It's a shifting thing. So for the V in the chord progression, you'd start the 1-3-5 on the G key. The G key is the number 5, or V, of the scale because it's 5 full steps away from the key the song is in, in this case C. It's the same form, but starting in a different place. This is the hardest thing to learn, but once you do it feels intuitive. And with that, you'll know most of music theory. I don't know any great tutorials off hand for music theory, but if you're looking to score a film google the video "How to Imitate a Whole Lot of Hollywood Film Music In Four Easy Steps". That video will get you most of the way to becoming a film scoring master. It's so simple! If you end on the "I" of the chord progression, it will sound like home base. It will sound like you finished the song. Simple as pie.

This was an awesome introduction! I've honestly always wanted to try and make music, but it seems so far off that I never even considered trying it myself, but this was really inspiring! I think your track is really creepy and cool, but it sounds more like a combat soundtrack with the shamanic drums. A more slow tension building track for the intro level would make more sense, I guess.

Hey Boro, I've learned a tremendous amount from your channel about digital painting, understanding light, visual storytelling, etc. but my expertise, training, and professional life is actually in sound engineering and music production, so welcome to my world! It's cool to see you exploring the tools and having fun with it. Enjoy the process! One quick tip: the bypass control on a plug-in is an on/off switch, so that's why that distortion effect just popped on part of the way across that automation slope.

Its looking awesome, I would love to see some hints in the floor of the the woods so I would know where to go, like some blood for example (this will allow for a more open environment instead of clearly defined paths in the forest), also the character design looks very clean specially with white shoes and finally the walking animation looks a little stiff, but very good job! I love how everything is coming together specially the monsters, keep up the great work

The big problem is, however, that there isn't a shortcut to making music. Sound design, composition, engineering, all of them are deviously difficult to become competent at. It doesn't matter how much educational stuff you watch or read, you will spend years to sound decent enough. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is if you're passionate about music production, go ahead, work on your own things! If it's about the money then please, do yourself a favor, just bite the bullet and use some royalty free tracks or spend some on a music pack, some aren't expensive at all, it'll be a far wiser investment of your time and money.

Cakewalk is an amazing DAW. It used to be a premium product called Sonar (I got the light version with a Boss guitar pedal I bought years ago), but then it got bought by some millionaire who made it free. So essentially you're getting a premium quality DAW like Logic or Pro Tools for free. Also if you're looking at getting a MIDI controller, I can recommend the M-Audio Oxygen Pro series. I have the 49 key but they have smaller ones too, and even pad only versions.

If you ever read this, you SHOULD definetly try some Rob Papen's synths, you're gonna dig 'em. I'd recomend using blade 2 for dope atmospherics and raw for heavy ass distortion sounds that could fit well into the creatures, also predator has some super interesting features like blending between presets wich would be nice to experiment with (it's currently my favourite synth). Also izotope trash is THE plugin to go for distorting. Some other amazing plugins i've been using for months now are camel crusher and camel phat for distortion and also camel space, wich can achieve some serious variety of sound from anyting. All of them come with a huge load of presets so that you can get awesome results with ease.

For DAWs you can try Reaper. It should be the most powerful and extensive one and happens to be the cheapest. Most lightweight at the same time too. I think the version you can try out for free doesn't expire and you can use it forever (not for commercial reasons I think). But it has way too much stuff in it, so it may be hard to learn. Also the default theme is ugly, make sure you download an other one.

There isn't a single best DAW, it's a foolish conversation. No DAW is best at all of the task it is used for, the best DAW is the one you are most comfortable and efficient with. For me that would be Reaper and I have used all of the major DAWs before except for Cubase, Reason and Bigwig (tho I still know a lot about them).
@moonstrobe
@moonstrobe Жыл бұрын
Agreed. FL Studio and Bitwig are probably the most versatile, especially when it comes to routing and modulation. FL definitely has the best piano roll for manual editing, which is great for people who are not good at playing piano. The latest update makes it even easier staying in scale. The life time free updates are also a huge notch.

For a game it might be better to break a score into parts that overlap and will synch/loop to the same timing. A good DAW should have a way to export it as multiple tracks. That way sections can be brought in or out via mixing within a game engine for the amount of drama in the game as audible cues to things like danger or prizes. Also there can be themes to the same score to set the tone like winning the round or running around with a minimal life bar and looking for something to help recover. A bit challenging to do, but when done well it really adds an extra touch to the audio.

I think the drums are too heavy, it sounds as it's made for an action game where I believe it needs to be more subtle and eerie... Just taking out the war drums can do the work I guess
