So fun fact about Hold Them Down: Antinous is not wrong in saying they’re being played. Penelope purposely chose a challenge only Odysseus could complete. Not only is his bow ridiculously strong, it’s theorized to be a recurve bow, a rarity for the time, meaning only he would know the technique to string it

At 4:34 Penelope's challenge was multi-layered. She told them they had to shoot through 12 axes after stringing his bow (which could only be done by Odysseus), but in the original and many fan animatics, she was sitting on the throne behind the 12 axes, which just shows how much faith she had in her husband and the lengths she went to in order to preserve her love for him. Why she's said "I'd rather die than grow old without the best of you (Odysseus)" and also said she never thought she'd go to these lengths for their love. She'd rather literally be shot and killed by the victor than ever live without Odysseus and rule by someone else's side

I think the detail that Odysseus was literally the strongest man and best archer in his entire kingdom is really great, because it shows just how strong he and the 600 men he brought with him were. All of his soldiers were extremely powerful warriors, but you don't really get that until the end when you realize just how much weaker the suitors are when compared to their King. And this is pre-Illiad Odysseus, too. No one that stayed home is even close to him. But throughout the journey, THEY (Odysseus's crew) were the helpless ones, dealing with things far beyond what most mortal men could. It's just interesting in context.
@qryptid

You totally explained why Penelope tested Odysseus like that, tho. Odysseus claimed he was different, he wasn't the husband she knew, so she asked him to do something her husband would never do. If he had been willing to destroy the bed that was a materialization of his love for her, then he really had changed and was no longer the man she knew. But she had no doubt that he would refuse, proving to his face that he is still and would forever be her husband. She didn't dismiss his fears of rejection or of who he had become, she made him see that he is still the man she loves. I freaking love this finale. Like what a way to end it all. I just 🤯

There’s a reason it reminds you of ‘Polyphemus’. Everything in ‘Odysseus’ is a throwback to the adversaries Odysseus has faced- his name being chanted in the same way Polyphemus’ was, the suitors locked in the palace like his men with Circe, Scylla for the torches, and the ruthlessness from Poseidon. Not to mention the direct Poseidon callbacks with the “No” after Odysseus asked him for mercy in Get in the Water. The warrior of the mind theme started playing for Telemachus’ introduction, he and Athena became friends, Telemachus became a warrior of Athena’s after that. And, Penelope, that icon. Odysseus walked in, terrified for her to see what he had become. When the monster rose with his rage at her asking him to break the bed, she didn’t push him away. Instead, she met him on that level. Reassurance that she accepts him before she even says it. Our clever, strong, and loving badass queen Penelope 🩵

I don't think it's that. She didn't JUST ask him to remove it. She asked him to carry it over and lift in on his shoulders. Only the real odysseus would know you can't pick up the bed because it's roots are grown into the ground. He couldn't just 'scoot it and pick it up' like he could a normal bed.

The olive tree bed was a symbol of their everlasting love, so if Ody would've to cut down the roots and move the bed, it shows that he would literally sacrifice everything to get whatever he wants but since he didn't do that, it proves that no matter what had happened, Ody still values their love above everything else and that their loves is the end goal, not just a means to an end

Some stuff about hold them down cause I know a lot about that song At 10:52 or so when Antinous says soul for the last time you can hear the bow being shot by Odysseus and going into his neck. Another fact about hold them down is you can hear Jorge/Ody’s voice in true chorus, light to start, just at the edges watching but near the end it’s loud and vibrant, up to when he kills him. I interpret that as Ody being the beggar and lurking around the edges, until he finally has enough of them and just snaps, killing Antinous. In the myth the wine Antinous was drinking spills out of his mouth along with his blood. Love that song so much

27:35 that's the sick part Odysseus wouldn't do it (move the bed), as it signifies their love he won't move it if he is to move it that means he doesn't love her anymore and would mean he's not the real Odysseus. It was a test to see if Ody was really there.

I already made this comment under another video but I will paste it here because you said the song odysseus reminds you of polyphemus: I realized that the song has a lot of parallels to the song Polyphemus. From the music to the chorus going "O-dy-sse-us" just like how it went "Po-ly-phe-mus" in his song It is also Odysseus coming back home to find a group of people in his home that's been plotting to hurt his family, just like how Polyphemus came to his cave to find Odysseus's men plotting to kill his sheep and having already killed one. He gets offered peace and is asked to spare the men, yet he refuses, just like Polyphemus. I suppose we can say that this time Odysseus himself is in the place of Cyclops. idek if thats intentional I just realized that while listening to Odysseus for the first time but knowing Jorge it probably is tbh And obv the Scylla reference, "Keep your head down, he's aiming for the torches!" makes one remember of the way Scylla spoke to him, "We are the same, you and I" Anyways yes I love the song and I2m yapping I'm sorrysgdhhjsj Also did you realize how many times odysseus's name is being chanted in the song compared to the others I mean we know Zeus doesn't need introduction cause he's the strongest but take one of the gods like Poseidon for example, we hear his name 7 times total in the Ruthlessness song's beginning Yet in the song Odysseus it's a constant chant and I think that's because he keeps being seen as a threat by different people Like, okay, idk how to explain this but Yk in the song Polyphemus, we only hear the "Po-ly-phe-mus" when the battle is beginning, the threat is registered, and thats that Same with Poseidon, his name is chanted only in the beginning of the song where he appears as a threat and is a clear threat throughout, I'd say same with Scylla too since once she shows herself she doesn't leave until she's done with eating six of them and leaves them alone Yet it's not like that with Odysseus, he "uses the darkness to hide his approaches", disappearing into the shadows before he appears before another one of the suitors and ends their life, re-asserting the threat over and over after momentary disappearances, and remember the rule of this Musical, if the singer isn't a God, they cannot create divine choruses, so someone must be saying his name Just imagine being buried in darkness awaiting your inevitable fate while people scream "He's here! He's here!" And the noise gets closer and closer and you hear men falling dead yet you cannot even see him approaching, I still love the way they don't see him coming until they're already impaled and are about to fall dead Yes I love this musical can you tell sjdjdjjsj

Ooh ooh. And the danger motif plays all the way through Odysseus. I saw a comment yesterday that someone said “Waiting” is the danger motif. It kinda makes sense actually, that waiting but sped up is Ody trying to get back to his family, and every danger is potentially stopping him getting home. Ohhhh so many layers in this musical. 27:12 that test is in important because it's not like they're going to share how they met to the public. To confirm his identity first, to see how indignant he was to the suggestion to replace the immovable bed he made and only he knows how the bed was made and carved into a living tree. It's not like they'll share the details of tbeir marriage publicly so there's that kind of discretion between couples. Also, she hasn't seen him in 20 years so there's likelyhood of people claiming to be Odysseus or gods or other entities disguising themselves as Odysseus. So that piece of information between them is important. Basically, you said to kill the very tree where they met becaus eyou thought the test was unnecessecary... when said tree meant a lot to Odysseus, because anyone else who would willingly do her test and get rid of the bed meant that the tree means nothing as it's a crucial part of their history.

During hold them down if you listen closely you can here Odysseus in the backing vocals he’s quiet for most , i don’t think he’s in the Telemachus or Penelope parts which duh, but during the final hold them down he starts to get louder as he gets the bow string it and (at least my head cannon) shot through the axes and kills Antinous Edit 2 things One the red eyes symbolize how he’s change becoming a more ruthless person to get home and he will always have those eyes Two: Penelope test with the bed is more on the reaction then the answer which while still important the fact that he was so betrayed at the ask was what truly confirmed it because keep in mind Zeus has taken the form off woman’s husband to sleep with them so its one last test just to make sure

I am Soooooo glad Jorge brought in a character like Eurymachus....I saw so many people wondering how Ody could be so cruel...or go against everything Polties stood for by brutally killing that man. That is the point, Ody never let go of Politie's message. Just that message had been corrupted. Like Antonius, Eurymachous was juat as dangerous and in those times, just like in todays day. A lot of people manipulate people by trying to be "That nice guy..." When in reality, they have their own dark reasonings. Eurymachous is a snake, hiding as a sheep. He probably used Quid Pro Qous, and favors to hurt people...Ody say that this man had 20 years to leave (in the story, The GODs even sent multiple signs, for 20 years to get the suitors to leave and they stayed) Eurymachous deserved every bit of that death, as much if not more as Antonius, Antonius was the head for sure, but Eurymachous was probably the brains of the operations....and to see his best friends "Open Arms" message corrupted ans used to sway him, Ody had to show him Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.
