I love how the wedding bed test is adapted from the original story. Sure it still works as a test for odysseus to see if it's really him, but I think it's more importantly used as a rebuttal of odysseus' claim, that he's no longer the husband she knew and loved. Him feeling hurt and betrayed by her request prove it, only her husband, who carved that wedding bed out of pure love would react that way. Deep down he is still the same person that left for war all those years ago, and although he may deny it, he is just a man. I also just think her entire response verse is perfect, even correcting him for when he sang 'I know you've been waiting for love' with 'I've been waiting for YOU'.

@@nochez2460 Yes, that's how I saw it too! Not just as a secret quiz to determine his identity, but as a way to prove to him that if there's even one scrap of who he used to be in there, it's the piece of him who loves his wife and son- the only piece she truly cares about. She's no stranger to warriors- she's SPARTAN. She might see it as sad that he had to stoop so low, but part of that sadness is on his own behalf! She knows how much it hurts him that he cannot escape the past. He may not be the SAME Odysseus but he is still Odysseus. In fact, the pain at having to become such a beast to get home is part of WHY he's so enraged during his slaughter. He's afraid of himself! He's probably even afraid he'll hurt his family. But their faith in him will help him at least regain some balance. And he immediately became Family Odysseus again when Telemachus was facing him. Even the fact that his anger at Penelope's request to move the bed wasn't overboard. He might have been worried that he'd lose his temper at her, but all he did was call her out for the request. He might have rage within him but it doesn't rule his every action.

@@WittySomething Even funnier is the fact that Amphinomus, the suitor Telemachus kills, is according to the Odyssey the ONLY suitor who argues against assassinating Telemachus and is generally trying to be an okay person by the standards of their society while still being one of the suitors. He's actually the only suitor that Odysseus tries to spare before his rampage while Odysseus is still disguised as a beggar. Of course, in the original Odyssey, Telemachus killing him is more karmic irony because Amphinomus didn't do nearly enough to keep his fellow suitors in line, especially since he would have a lot of influence over the group because a small majority (including him, 55 of the 108 suitors) of the suitors are from his father's kingdom and are technically supposed to listen to him. He's unwilling to use his actual authority to try and put a stop to the suitors's excesses, and as a result he shares their fate.

Fun fact about the suitors: they don't have just one main instrument. They have a cello (like Polyphemus, because they are monstrous) lead string ensemble (like Penelope, as they her as their queen), trumpets (like Poseidon, because theyre antagonistic towards Telemachus just as Poseidon was to Odysseus), and a grungy electric guitar (like cunning Odysseus because they want to replace him as king). And Antinous, the main suitor, uses the other suitors as backup vocals (similar to how Eurylochus had the crew as backup). They serve as a dark reflection of many other characters from the epic

@@sunoshecano3837 No problem, Some other fun facts: During the end of Would You Fall in Love with Me Again, the 'Just a Man' section is played in triplets, like Poseidon (symbolizing ruthlessness). | In Odysseus (The Song), Odysseus (the character) was smart enough to lock the weapons room, but when Telemachus came back and armed himself, he didn’t relock the door. | The suitors' constant 'Where is he?' was actually pulled from a cut song called Man of the House. | The chanting heard throughout Odysseus (The Song) is a direct callback to the Polyphemus fight, where there were chants of 'Po-le-fe-mus.' This time, it’s 'O-de-say-us,' and at the end of the song, the two 'Odysseus' lines are sung the same way they were in No Longer You. | Finally, in Hold Them Down, the reprised strings from The Challenge are slightly off because 'none of us can string this.' When Antinous is talking about Penelope, you can hear the viola (Penelope’s main instrument) in the background, almost like a scream, but it gets overpowered by the cello (reflecting how the suitors plan to overpower Penelope, with their instruments literally overpowering hers). | When any of the suitors sing 'Penelope,' they sing it like the sirens did-in other words, they sing it wrong. The melody that plays after Penelope declares he passed her secret test is actually "Just A Man." I like to take it as though he can FINALLY be, if nothing else, a MIX of man and monster instead of losing all traces of his Humanity. Back with his family, he can at least *start* to heal. He will never recover, but he might reclaim his dignity and for the things he cannot handle without violence, he might step aside and let Telemachus and Penelope handle it: let them be the grace and mercy he cannot be, while he is the muscle and the monster to back them up. One thing that's made more evident in the watch party animatics: Athena was backing up TELEMACHUS, and it even calls him the Warrior of the Mind. The scene in "I Can't Help But Wonder" is the first real interaction she has with Ody since their split. In the original Odyssey, the diplomatic mission Telemachus went on was at Athena's advice- if I recall correctly he was seeking guidance for how to clean house of the toxic suitors.

And yes, he did go not only with Athena's advice, but with her on the boat disguised as someone named "Mentor", an "old friend" of Odysseus.

And he does immediately try to make the slain Antinous the scapegoat when in reality he is equally responsible for a failed ambush on Telemachus. Clearly he has wanted the second one a lot more than the first, and it is his realization he will get it. 3: Since we know Odysseus's instrument is a Guitar we can notice its tempo really well here. My favorite example is in the last song where you can hear him get angry and *instantly* calm down the moment Penelopy explains herself. 4: In Odysseus we hear, similar to Polythemus and Ruthlessness, the "Boss" of the song being sung by the choire. Only now Odysseus is the Boss. Not even Carybdis got such a treat and their song is just named after them.

Here's a few things i found but take them with a grain of salt because i could be seeing things were they aren't In 4:50 and 45:12 when Penelope sings the Waiting motif, it's longer than normal. I believe characters tend to sing "waiting" 4 times tops. This shines a light on the fact that no one in Epic has waited for Ody quite like Penelope did. This is specially true in Would You Fall in Love With Me Again. Also, during The Challenge Waiting motif, the suitors back up Penelope by singing her name as if she was singing to them when in reality the "waiting" is for Ody instead of them. The entirety of Odysseus (the song) plays like a battle. Ody's declaration of having had enough is the beginning of the battle, the "Where is he!?" part is Ody dominating the flow of battle. The suitor calling for Open Arms is an attempt at surrendering which Ody doesn't accept. When the suitors enter the armory and Telemachus appears the song introduces him like a new great ally for Odysseus has entered the battle and that's why his Legendary motif sounds like a heroic fanfare. Then Melanthius, the suitor directly directly talking to Telemachus, rallies the other men because he sees a chance for winning against Ody. The suitors then try to overwhelm Telemachus and as they see that is slowly working they start chanting "Hold Him Down" because now the tide of battle is turning into their favor. Ody then decapitates Melanthius in front of the remaining suitors which causes them to surrender and flee. The end of the song then announces Ody as the victor as he stands in the middle of numerous dead bodies like a monster. While Hold Them Down is a very dark song mainly because what Antinous implies what he and the other suitors will do to Telemachus and specially Penelope, i find it great that he barely even got to announce his ploy and nothing else. It's amazing that Epic didn't shy away of going into such a dark direction this time but to balance it out, Antinous dies as soon as he finishes explaining to the suitors and us, the listeners, what he plans to do to Penelope. If we got another extra song on Antinous performing some minimal advance on Penelope or Telemachus the saga could have turned out to be somewhat off putting to some listeners.

The fact that the FINAL SONG of the WHOLE SERIES reprises Just A Man - arguably the song that got the hype going in the first place, THE SONG WHERE ALL ODY SINGS ABOUT IS WANTING TO BE HOME WITH PENELOPE AND TELEMACHUS - is just. An absolute stroke of genius. My god. There truly is nothing like epic the musical out there.

A 9/10 end for Epic. Excited to see what Jay does next. Hoping Illiad (possibly Song of Achilles style) or maybe a Titanomachy?

Well, Jorge said he had another musical project in him & that it wasn't the end of the journey at the end of the live stream. Also, he did say earlier on that the new one is possibly going to be based on the illiad.

Also, I like to include my rating as well. I give it a 10/10, I love the Odyssey and musicals. I specifically love history as well. so 10/10!!

Jorge actually released a snippet to his highest Spotify listeners. I won’t share it obviously, but it’s someone singing to Aphrodite with the specific words “Can you help me, cast your spell please?” Which sounds a lot like Paris asking Aphrodite to make Helen fall in love with him

The thing with the Challenge is that Odysseus's bow had a unique recurve on it, that only he was strong enough to physically string and wield it properly. So, Penelope essentially issued an impossible task to the suitors to buy more time for Odysseus to return.

Something I noticed: At 44:33, I can hear the Waiting motif in the background when he's talking about the wedding bed, which I believe it's from Penelope, who has been waiting for Odysseus and wasn't sure of he was the man she loves, but hearing him remembering and talking about the symbol of their love is like her hope and joy is slowly rising, cuz the man she loves is truly back and she has been waiting for so long before she explains herself and says he's still the man she loves and let it know that she's been waiting for him for so long. Then we go to 45:45, I hear the Just a Man motif in the background, which feels like now that he's back with the love of his life, after she accepts him, after she says he's still the man she love, that's when he's no longer a monster and has transformed back to just a man with his wife. It's so beautiful and such a genius thing that I'm sobbing like a bitch.

It's less that penelope can't wait anymore and more that the suitors are getting too impatient, and stringing ody's bow is the challenge because it's basically an impossible task for anyone besides oddyseus himself for one of a few reasons that i've seen, those being that it's a recurve bow which has a different stringing method than the bows the suitors are used to, it's specially made to be hard to string if not impossible to string unless you know a specific trick to do it, or it was a gift and the bow originally belonged to heracles and ody is just built different.

You noting the Polyphemus similarities is apt. Ody is exactly being the kind of monsters he encountered throughout his journey. Polyphemus was the first, so you hear it most in the instrumentals. The choir chanting "Ody-sseus" because it's his boss fight, plus you can hear the cello throughout it that was playing in Polyphemus. You already pointed out the Get in the Water reference with Ody's "no" which is paired with a Ruthelessness reference in the guy begging to be spared. He hunts like Scylla, aiming for the torches. One thing not many others have been pointing out is Ody's "mercy" rant being a parallel to Zeus' wrath in God Games. "No one beats me, NO ONE beats my game." "All of you who have done me wrong, THIS will be your fate."

"Bringing that motif back from the underworld" Oh how it hurts for you to say that... It's the other way around. Bringing the "waiting" to the underworld and use it for the mom, was mean! When we first heard it in Challenge... Yes I know the underworld is before the challenge, but we (the fans from the beginning) heard it in the challenge first... The same with everything... I also heard another youtuber say "He brought back the "Where is he" from legendary" 😭😭😭 No he didn't....! 😭 He brought back the "where is he" TO "Legendary" FROM "Man of the house" He found a way to keep it in! Even though he desided to cut the song. It's okay... I get it... I'll have to learn and except (sob)😢 that not everyone has been there from the beginning, and that it will only get worse cause Epic will most likely get new fans in the furture... Which is a good thing! For them... I just... Wish it was possible to share the understanding of what the people who has been here since the beginning has experienced... I guess I'll just have to tressure my experience 🥰

I totally understand that perspective! Musicals and Musical Concepts are never written in order of when they are released! Even the greatest classical musicians wrote their symphonies out of order! When saying what I did, it was from a narrative perspective more than anything based on the song orders of the albums. Best example is the Gustav Holst's The Planets. Mercury was written first but the order most people recognize it start with Mars. It's just how multi movement works go normally!
@MalachiaVT3 күн бұрын
You realize how pretentious and gatekeep-y you sound with this? "Real" fans aren't just those who have been there from the release of the first saga, and saying that really makes you a bad fan in the eyes of many. Please take a step back and stop being so uptight about how long someone has been in the fandom.
@malenejensen022 күн бұрын
I NEVER said real fans. I made sure not to say that. Cause any fan is as real as the next one. But I agree, I still sound pretentious. I'm aware.
@MalachiaVT2 күн бұрын
@@malenejensen02 So long as you understand you sound pretentious and gatekeep-y, that's all I ask of you, nothing more and nothing less. HOWEVER, while you didn't explicitly say "real fans" you did multiple times say "Fans from the beginning" and that it's "only going to get worse" when the intended order was never the order they were written and the snippets were released in.
