The boy has finally awoken, his summer vacation is now over. Welcome brotha. Welcome to the family. I’ve played persona 5, royal, strikers, persona 4 golden, persona 3 fes and soon will get the persona 3 reload. Metaphor for me has such a good fusion of new things and persona related gameplay that evolves it into things I wanted a persona game to have. All of the characters can use any warrior(WHICH IS HUGE). It makes it so creative how to go about battles. The gripping story when “that scene” happens in the square. Like oh my god this is happening now??? I’m 18 hours in and am always making sure that before I get to the final boss of a dungeon that every single enemy is blue. This game has so many quality of life changes it’s ridiculous.

Right now, Atlas and the Like A Dragon franchises are doing a great job of bringing a bit of real-time combat into turn-based without completely undermining the turn-based aspect. LAD struggles with providing a challenge, but it's fun positioning yourself to take advantage of the environment, while Atlus's Push-Turn system is engaging. Metaphor seems to have a very forgiving calender system, where you can max out stats and social links without having to worry about answering every question right like in Persona (might not finish all the side stuff first time). You have to accept that you're not getting Persona maxed out on your first run unless you use a walkthrough.

After Persona 5 Royal last year, I was itching to play more Atlus titles. I remembered SMT was the mother series so I sought out the recent titles. I knew Vengeance was on the way so I opted for SMT 4 which was surprisingly addicting. I enjoyed so much of the story and gameplay that I immediately bought SMT IV: Apocalypse. I made it to the end but didn’t finish because of the final boss’s mechanic and it conflicted with me spiritually. Other than that, it’s a solid system that has me hooked. I’ve already found a copy of SMT III HD, now I need Vengeance and P3R. I’m glad to see so many more people opening up to Atlus’ games just as I have.

The music is a beautifuly BANGER *chefs kiss. The gameplay and combat is so addictive and engaging. even though there's no romance system but still the whole story and the characters keep pulling you in so many memorable moments. I understand why fans don’t like the remake trilogy. Not a disgrace or insult to them at all. I know real fans of the original loving them as well. Ff isn’t turn based anymore and they won’t go back most likely. They’re fantastic games story gameplay all of it. I love the original and i love the new trilogy. It’s a continuation of the original story after dierge and ya it has issues but the entire story actually connects to every game short story the poem etc.

Ya love to see it. If you enjoyed the gameplay of Metaphor, I'd also recommend trying out Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 + 2. The system for learning skills is quite similar to Metaphor and both use the press turn system, it's also got a great story and characters. No calendar, but it's just such a solid linear game that I don't think it matters

Personally I rarely ever enjoy turn based games. There are definitely a few I quite enjoy, like ffX, Persona, Pokemon, and Chrono trigger, but basically everything else tends to be hit or miss with me. On the other hand I always enjoy the heck out of real time action games. So I definitely understand what you mean Jared. Sometimes some games of a certain genre just don't work, but then you find that one that does and it gets you hooked real fast.

I actually love Persona games and they do usually start slow, but I LOVE the jazz music and it keeps me in and I learn to love the game beyond the music once I am in. I played a couple hours of the demo and it’s definitely different music. The music is 100% incredible in this game, but it is not as much my vibe. I know I’m going to like the game, but I have to stick it out. Glad you are willing to give Persona another go. I think I prefer Persona 5 Royal for the handcrafted dungeons. Persona 3 Reload is still very good but Tartarus, the main and only dungeon, feels kinda like a drag. It was part of the original P3 and getting rid of it would only completely change the game.

I was unable to put down P5R when I played it. My first playthrough was 150 hours over the course of nine days. I just loved the art, the music, the gameplay, the demons. For some reason my brain likes keeping up with the calendar. I think it's all the little points of achievement. If you go back to P5R, use Japanese voices. It will greatly assist you in reducing Morgana's obnoxiousness.

I used to hate turn base games too. As I got older and had less energy, i have since changed my opinion on the genre. Not comparing myself to you, but it might be similar for you. I would also recommend trying to give persona 5 royal another shot. The story in that game is probably one of the best written ever. i would suggest at least try getting past the first arc before deciding if it's truly for you. Persona 5 royal is near 150 hours, so the start can be a bit slow since it's teaching you a lot of the mechanics aka tutorial.

I don't like games unless they are turn based, though I prefer the more difficult ones like early or maddening fire emblem, SMT games, ect. I've seen people say its a "skill thing"....Maybe, since I have little practice with action games I am not good with them and that's okay....But people who use that as a sort of humble brag when they learn my preference always give me a chuckle inside as I know they wouldnt last 5 minutes playing nocturne or even the first stage of maddening 3 houses mode.... I just think theres something more interesting about the complexity and depth of controlling so many aspects of a large cast (the larger the better) with an epic story backdrop and detailed control over builds, and characters one by one instead of just picking a favorite and hacking away. Metaphor is one of the best i"ve seen though. Just goes to show different people like different things.

You will probably like a lot of turn based games tbh, the Persona ones are very niche. I like them but I don't love them. I hate the entire social system and life sim parts so it makes it hard for me to really get into them.

Have you tried the SMT side of the series? SMT games have almost the same combat system while almost entirely ditching the life-sim stuff, putting focus entirely on the combat. The stories tend to be much more minimalistic, but if gameplay is what you’re focusing on, they might be more up your alley. They can also be a lot more brutal in terms of difficulty, if that sounds appealing to you. SMT4 would be a good place to start if you can somehow get your hands on it. 3 and 5 would also work, being more easily available. I think 3 is great, but it is pretty old and might not be the best starting point. Same goes for 1 and 2.
