If you're in Harbin, don't miss the opportunity to explore the hauntingly fascinating Ruins of the Japanese Army Unit 731 Headquarters and delve into the gripping stories at the Unit 731 Museum. These remarkable sites, nestled on Xingjian Street in Pingfang District of Harbin, promise to leave an indelible mark on your soul. Let's share the rich tapestry of history with the world, learning from past and paving the way for a harmonious and peaceful future. The best part is that admission to the museum is free, and you can also rent a translator device at no cost. This ensures that language barriers won't hinder your exploration and understanding of the exhibits.

Fun facts: the ice cubes used to build this ice city are SPECIAL ICE. They are cut from the frozen local river “Song Hua River” that passes through Harbin. The ice was formed while water flows slowly and gently. Therefore there is no bubble or ‘fog’ inside the ice. All ice cubes are crystal clear. You can see through the thick ice cubes. The quality of the ice ensures the embedded lights effect. Every year to ‘harvest’ the special ice for building the annual ice city is a major job. The extra ice cubes are stored deep down underneath for the next year to use.

Even though it's winter now and it's -20 degrees in Harbin, but if you travel a few thousands kilometers south to Hainan or Sanya (Hawaii of China), it's plus 20 degrees. So China is huge and the temperature can range from -20 to + 20 depending on the longitude. Also, the country has a very diverse landscape, from desert dunes, rolling hills, gigantic mountains, snow & ice, forest, jungles, oceans, plains, concrete jungle, etc. I hope you get to visit other places too. You should check out Dadong (near North Korean border). Or Yanji in Yanbian Chaoxian Prefecture in Jilin. It's full of Chaoxian (Joseon or ethnic Korean) people - it's nearby anyways in northeast China. Go to Ordos or Hohot in Inner Mongolia during summer. There's also Kashgar, Urumqi, Turpan, Aksu in Xinjiang that have the Central Asian / Middle East vibe. Since you're in Harbin, you should've already seen some Russian architecture like the St. Sophia cathedral with the onion domes. If you go Southwest to Yunan, there's a beautiful town called Lijiang. Also visit Dali as well, there's a huge Hui Muslim population there. In Guangzhou you can see one of the oldest mosques in the world dating back 1300 years ago when the earliest Arabs reached China by sea route. Chongqing (a temporary capital of the Republic of China or ROC during WWII), Chengdu, Lhasa, Changsha, etc. Outside special administrative zone include Macau, HK, Taiwan (though controversial), etc. Older / former capital include Shenyang (Mukden) - former capital of the later Jin Dynasty (Manchu), Nanjing (first capital of Ming Dynasty), Xi'an (capital of various dynasties including Han & Tang). Kaifeng & Hangzhou (old capitals of Northern & Southern Song Dynasty). Hope you get to visit Qingdao (better during summertime) - used to be a former German concession / colony. Tsingtao beer comes from that city, which used to be a former German brewery that the Germans left behind. Dalian is another cool place. Tianjin - looks like a typical European city because it got traded between the French, Italians, Austro-Hungarian and Belgians, so the houses and buildings look like typical European architecture. You can check Yuan MingYuan (Old Summer Palace ruins). It used to be a grand garden palace with a fusion of European & Oriental architectural design, but the Brits & French destroyed it in 1860. It was designed by a mix of Italian, French Jesuits and local Chinese architects built in 18th century. Took 3 generations of emperors to build but destroyed in 3 days by Brits/French.

Rough translation: The mom around 16:00 first asked if you're travelling, then said your English is too fast and she couldn't understand! Then the kid says you're probably from Russia? And I guess you told them you're from Germany, because the mom said she can go find you when she goes to Germany, and the girl says abroad is too scary! The girl says "my mom told me it's the shape of a heart" and the mom asked the girl to make a heart with her hands. The little girl then said "why do foreigners talk like this?" The girl then asked you if you're been to Russia. The mom asked the girl to leave because it's time to go, and the girl says she doesn't want to go and want to stay! What a cute interaction! Thanks for showing us Harbin. It's been over 20 years since I've been, and now I want to go back again too!

Translation for Chinese in the video: 15:40 Mom (to the girl): What's your name? (She understood the question and asked her daughter to say her name) 15:46 Mom: Are you travelling here? 15:55 Mom: I cannot understand English when it is fast. Girl: He might be a Russian. (Harbin is very close to Russia) Mom: Are you from Russia? 16:03: Mom (to the girl): You can sit here and have a photo with the uncle. 16:15 Mom (asking her daughter): Will you go to Germany in the future? You can go visit the uncle. (I'm not very sure if it's Germany (德国 de guo) or Russia (俄国 e guo), they sounds familiar but I think its Germany. Also curious how the mom figured out Ken is from Germany) 16:20 Girl: Foreign countries are a bit scary. Mom: (laughed) how do you know it's scary? You have never been abroad. 16:26 Mom: You can treat the uncle with some cookies. 16:40 Girl: My mom said, I said this is a heart. Mom: You can make a heart gesture to the uncle. 16:55 Girl: Mom, why do foreigners talk like this? 17:30 Girl: Uncle, have you been to Russia? 17:50 Mom (to the girl): You can speak Chinese. He can understand Chinese (by using the translation software)
It was really nice that they tried to communicate. Also he told them he was from germany.

There is incredible infrastructure capacity behind this. You have to build quickly, and the construction machinery must meet the requirements for snow and low-temperature operations. There are also circuits laid inside these ice and snow buildings. Because of the ice, these circuits must be highly insulated, waterproof, and resistant to low temperatures. And these were realized in a third-tier border city in China.

Hi Ken I am a local of Harbin. I saw your video on Bilibili 😭 and I immediately want to check them out here. I am so proud that my hometown is loved by people all over the world! About the dish (锅包肉)your friend recommended, you might also need to order some rice to eat with it. Rice in northeastern China is famous too, it is more delicious than rice from anyone else and ppl in other regions of China love it very much. Another dish I’d like to recommend is 地三鲜, it is a stir-fried dish made of potatoes, eggplants and bell peppers. I’d like to tell you that you weren’t wearing enough. You have to wear a down coat and a sweater, and you have to wear quilted cotton pants inside your jeans. If possible, you should wear a thicker trousers than jeans outside the cotton pants. And you need to wear shoes with cotton covering the inside. About the drones, I saw the staff flying drones so there must be a way to make it possible to fly them. The Ferris wheel is actually running, but it is not very obvious because it is very slow. It takes 30 minutes for it to turn one round. I genuinely recommend this one, especially in the nighttime, because you can have a full view of the entire park, you can even see the lights on Songhua river and the bridge over it. There is also a very long slide, people take very long queue for several hours to ride on it but I don’t recommend it, it isn’t worth of your time. When I post this comment you might already left Harbin, but it is okay! We are looking forward to see you again!

If you really plan to go the Harbin Ice City theme park. Here's a good tip to keep you really warm for a good 8 hours from day to night. Remember, if you insulate yourself well, you won't feel cold. So first 1) remember to bring a nice thick scarf to wrap around your neck 2) wear a pair of decent ski gloves (water proof) and not the woolley knitted gloves. 3) wear a pair of long johns under your thick pants 4)and here is the special secret I will share with you, go to the supermarket and buy yourself a bag or two heat packs, these are not expensive at all, costing you most half a dollar each and they come in either individual or a pack of ten pieces. Once you tear off the plastic wrap and snap it the chemical reaction will generate heat immediately and then uses the adhesive side and stick it to the inner side of your pullover or jacket and once enclosed I guaranteed you will be nice and warm for no less than 8 hours. No need to thank me if you have tried it and find it work like magic, just pass on the knowledge to your friends.

6:13 shows the iron throne from the famous HBO series Game of Thrones. That's why a lot of people sit on it taking pictures.

Looks amazing there, have been planning to go there for years but never got time while I'm in China. My daughter was there and enjoyed it and she said it was very cold😅

by the way, if you want translation, from 16:00 onwards, the mom is saying youre talking so fast and she cant catch your english. then the mom also asked the daughter whether she wants to go to germany, and the daughter said foreign counties are scary. i guess she received some education in chinese public school that every foreign country is fighting wars or something. then the mom said to the daughter, you havent even been abroad, how do you know germany is scary etc etc.

It has nothing to do with public education. At her age, she has no access to war-related education. But she may be affected by the media, self-media and the opinions of surrounding friends.

@@qfzpjm159 you meant like some uploaders on douyin or something? probably. but i was in a chinese primary school as well and you know the 品德与社会lesson? so in those lessons we are taught with gulf war and korean war etc, and that was even 20 years ago. so i guess she does receive some of these war related education in public schools

哈爾濱非常非常寒冷,但可以到當地超市購買服裝,非常非常便宜又保暖,帶不走丟了也不會心疼~

When I visited China prior to Covid, I found no matter where I went, there was always something that entertained the population. I travelled to many cities and marvelled how happy people were. Willing to give strangers a smile and show with pride their cities. From small to large cities , after dark you could always find them dancing in the squares and parks. With food in their stomach, a roof over their head and music in their heart seemed to negate the lack of free speech. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we in the West with that freedom, could show as much happiness in public on a daily basis that the Chinese seem to do.

China has freedom of speech, but this does not include spreading false information and rumors. For example, Mark Twain hired children to discredit his opponents in "Running for Governor."
