Good morning James. I have to admit that I was on the verge of tears when I saw the title of this video hoping that it wasn’t true. I’m glad you aren’t going to quit and that this is an encouragement video. I’ve been watching you for years and because of your teachings I will continue to watch. I’ve had many fails along the way but each year gets better and better because I refuse to give up. This years garden has been my best thus far even with the fails but I will not give up. It’s dry, blight and the squash vine borer have been really bad this year but I’ve had my best garden this year. Thank you for putting in all the work that you do to help us learn what we need to know in order to have a successful bounty. Thank you Tuck for being man’s best friend❤️❤️❤️❤️

James - you have no idea how much I needed to hear this 'pep talk'! The heat and humidity this year have almost done me in physically. The only time it's been cool enough for me to be in the garden was between 6:00 and 7:00 in the mornings. Plus, my water bill was really high. I've now decided to totally redo how I'm going to garden - focus more on a fall garden and be glad my herbs, mints and cherry tomatoes were so productive this year. Just grow what I know I'll need and will use. Remember that I don't have to grow everything - just some things and go from there. Thank you and also love to Tuck!

What about using shade cloth and mulching to help conserve moisture. I watch another channel: Millennial Gardener, he lives near Wilmington NC. Every year his garden is burned up by July due to the sun and heat. He did a video on using shade cloth. It's on a simple overhead structure and he says it is much cooler under the 40% cloth. His plants thrive under the cloth. He did a video where he visited and interviewed James. James also uses shade cloth to a degree.

@@donnabrooks1173 that’s right! I’m in Texas and couldn’t garden without shade cloth. In addition I can actually grow things under the shade cloth that I normally can’t at this time of year. I have one for each bed that only blocks the southwest side. I have no burned up plants.

I’ve been gardening for about 3 years and in those 3 years every failure has prepared me for the next season. I came up with a solution for each failure. This year is so far my best directly because of this. I am finally at a point where my crop is exploding and I am getting a higher rate of edible food. When the animals were eating my crop I covered all my beds in deer netting and when the bugs started eating some of my crop or killing my plants I now spray them with a mix of Neem, vinegar and dish soap. Now I barely have any loss of crop. Those failures helped me get to my best year ever so far.

As a 69-year-old first time gardener, my whole garden was a learning experiment this year. The carrots and beets did so poorly that I yanked them up and replanted that bed with pickling cukes and zucchini (both of which are doing very well!). The tomatoes are growing so big and fast that I'm having to add stakes daily to keep them from tipping over. I figure any food I get this year (or any year, for that matter) is a blessing I'll thankfully accept! I'll spend this winter getting the supplies I've learned that I need for next season. Your videos are a big help, and my Yorkie, Murphy, enjoys seeing Tuck, though he gets a bit envious of the garden snacks. 🙂❤🥕

James, The advice you give for growing tomatoes in NJ is perfect. Through the past 4 years I have learned the lessons you have taught along with my own trials and errors and finally perfected a tomato crop, almost completely disease free. I didn't have any Idea that my main problems were due to improper ventilation and too many leaves near the bottom of the plant. I have learned to only keep what is needed to shade the growing tomatoes never let anything touch the ground except the stem and roots! Don't over or under water plants. Keep them full of nutrients, especially nitrogen during the vegetative stage. BTW, I Never killed a single plant using organic fertilizer. My porterhouse are reaching almost 5 pounds. I want to enter them into a contest they look so beautiful. Almost a month on the vine and just starting to show signs of ripening. Thank you so much for all of your great advice!

My blackberries and aronia berries are loaded and ripening quickly! The tomatoes in the raised bed, not so much due to root rot in half of them. We've had a lot of rain this year (Toronto area). Probably a drainage problem due to the landscape fabric at the bottom. Will make holes at the bottom in fall when the plants are out.

I needed this! I am currently fighting vine borers after winning a fierce battle against squash bugs. It was a punch in the face. A rabbit ate all my green beans. Then I looked around and my peppers are doing amazing. My winter squash is wonderful. Tomatoes are fabulous. Then I sat down and here you were telling me the same happens to you. I needed to hear that! I’m not the only one! Thanks James, as always love your content. Appreciate you and ❤❤❤❤ tuck!

"half left", I needed this. We have had incredible rains here in Colorado. The hard part is there has been hail with it. My garden is full for the first time in years. I have finally learned year after year how to protect it from wind, how much to water in high altitudes, and when to plant. Two days ago we had downpour of rains, again, and hail. Punching holes in my beautiful kale, collards and winter squashes. It also took down my Holly hock - again, first time able to grow flowers out here on the mesa. My garden is now covered with a floating row cover, and I am trying to tend them with hope. Picking the leaves and lettuces that have holes and putting them in our meals each day. I love "half left". It lifted me as soon as you said it. Thank you.

Last year was my worst year ever. It seemed nothing germinated. So I fertilized and worm casted the beds and put them under leaf mulch and had my knee replaced. Was a bit discouraged but really excited now again and getting ready to sow my fall garden I have a vision in my head of a beautiful fruitful garden again 🎉

Very timely message! I was comparing my garden this year to last year, and I learned so much from my failures last year. I planted too closely to a black walnut tree last year, and it killed all of my plants about this time last year. I moved further away from it this year, and now they are thriving! I was ready to quit last year, but I'm glad I didn't!

Besides the information about gardening I learn here...I come for the optimistic attitude you consistently give us. As a lifetime sufferer of anxiety and depression (and unfortunately of giving up all too often) your advice is always a metaphor for good mental health to me. Thanks.

I love your channel, it’s one I share. You are such an excellent teacher and are a true inspiration. You are one of those that inspires me to learn and go on. Each year is a learning experience, one that will only grow in demand as people learn that they must be self-sufficient. You have found your true calling. I’m soon 72, and yet for all my years of living and experience gained, you are a guiding light for the rest of us.

Hello all. Here in West Virginia the lack of rain has been horrible. I am very sad about my garden not being quit what I wanted. I started in March building my new garden. I got a late start on getting plants into ground. I thought I might quit. I really enjoy working the soil and watching the plants grow. I thank you so much for this video. You have given me a great perspective on how to look at my garden this year. I look forward to watching and learning from your videos.

♥♥♥♥ Tuck deserves lots of hearts for not quitting. Lovely to see the little guy out and about. You and Tuck inspire me to get out there and grow. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm. We've all had a rough year in the garden when it comes to growing. The main thing is, count the successes, learn from your mistakes and move on so that for the next season, you'll do better.

I really needed to hear this! This is my first year growing a garden. My husband has been less than thrilled with the water bill, other costs and the fact that the only thing thriving is my zucchini. I'm excited that SOMETHING is producing, but I was a little discouraged because they have been some expensive zucchini!! I started a few brasicas and if Tuck isn't quitting than neither will I. My husband didn't think anything would grow because I notoriously have a brown thumb, but I credit your videos for the plants that I have had success with. Thank you for providing so much knowledge and words of encouragement.

I understand that as we had 120° temperature in several days in a row over 112°! Everything is now crunchy! Going out in the heat even at night early morning you feel like passing out so you had to water as fast and quickly as you could. It was horrible. But I’ll try again this fall which probably be for us October. Zone 9a

You might think that in my early 70's, after gardening for 46 years, I might be getting tired of it. Nope. I love it more and more. This year, I finally invested into heating pads and grow lights. I finally found out what is the best fertilizer for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Three years ago, I started growing hard neck garlic. This year, for the first time, I decided to try growing sweet onions from seeds. I ended up with so many healthy looking onion seedlings that I had to ask my neighbour to let me plant half of them on his side of our chain link fence. I save seeds from most of my veggies for next year. I even save seeds from fresh bell peppers that I buy in the grocery store. I just can't quit. There is so much more to learn and to experiment with. This year, I started making detailed notes in my new gardening journal to remind myself what worked and what I would do differently next year.

Every year I always have some crop that dose poorly. And it’s never the same thing. Factors out of your control sometimes influence it all. It’s easy to see the failure but when one fails usually others do amazing. This year my apple and garlic got hit hard with the super cold this winter, but my winter squash are taking over

Yup. Last year my pepper plants just could never get a foothold and their output was inconsistent (save for one cayenne pepper plant -out of all the peppers I swear cayenne plants can survive a nuclear blast lol). This year? The peppers are the tallest I've ever had! Considering I live in Zone 3 (!!!) I've had many people chat me up at the community gardens asking if I gave my plants the Lance Armstrong treatment LOL. Nope! Just learning things every year and the fourth year is the charm! In a few weeks my peppers and tomatoes will be bursting!

Your opening encouragement seriously made me tear up. Cucumber mosaic virus killed my MM76s, black mildew on my cabbage, SVB killed my spaghetti squash, blight on my tomatoes. I haven't had one tomato and cannot eat my cabbage... I don't know how to stop disease in my permaculture. So far, I have had no success this year and my heart is so broken 😞
