I watch your videos often , this one had a different vibe to it. Felt a lil challenged. When you mentioned toward end about his lot you said, know you now what you can do w a basic suburban lot it almost felt like an insult toward his space. I watched his face change a lil. Not sure how many suburban lots you've been on but his isn't basic. I've lived in several cities and his large is quite yard. I'd love to have his yard space. He's created a beautiful space. Nothing basic about it.

I’m 74 and started with a4x5’ garden patch when I was10. Radishes lettuce and bunch onions. My grandfather had farmed and ranched. Watch him in later years, I learned to grow root vegs. besides radishes. I went on to raise rabbit for meat and had a veg. garden. Basically just small veg gardens until we moved out of Ca into Oregon. At 55 I started larger garden patches, raising chickens. At 70 I planted a 16 tree orchard and put up a game fence to protect my investment. At 74 I replaced and planted 6 more trees. Happy to say that raising fruit trees and my own food is most rewarding in my Garden of Eattin!😋

I live in a townhome with a side, front and back garden space totalling about 2500 sq ft. I want to encourage people to garden and grow food. I'm 65 and husband 71. We grow organically with companion and trap plants. The best overall to deter bugs are Cayenne Pepper plants, Petunias , Nasturiums,and Mexican Marigolds. Depending on the time of year I grow 11 dwarf fruit trees, two types of Green Sage, Thyme, Oregano,Mint, Pineapple Sage, Parseley,Cilantro , Yerba Buena, Chives, Basil, Dill ,Bunching Onions, Strawberries, Spinach, Green beans, Zucchini, Butternut, Crookneck, and Spagetti Squash. Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Radiches, Poblano Peppers , Jalepeno, Anaheim Peppers Cayenne Peppers, Red, Yellow and Green Bell Peppers, Arugala, Chard Cabagge , Kale, Garlic. My yard has decorative bulbs, flowers, miniature pine trees, Clematis,. I think that the diversity of plants confuses the bugs, and draws in birds, toads and predator bugs. It still looks very nice which is a lot of the work " arrangeing the garden each spring" Here in North Carolina there is every bug known to man and maybe a few more ! One trick against the vine borer : Start Zucchini squash seeds indoors in Dec or Jan, then plant them out asap when the weather warms. That way you beat the vine borer. Then plant Zucchini seeds again mid July outdoors and get a second crop also beating the vine borer's 3rd rgg laying. Don't grow Zucchini in summer. Also my other Squash like Butter nut is literally grown in a forest of Mammoth Dill and Cayenne Peppers to watd off squash bugs and bine borers. DO NOT A SQUASH BUG THE SMELL BRINGS IN MORE OF THEM. DO NOT PUT GARDEN LIGHTS BECAUSE THEY ATTRACT BUGS ! Use a fire pit when entertaining. Make Smudge sticks with herb trimming and flower dead heading. Put Bat boxes, birds houses. Spray Zucchini with a milk water combo in the sunlight not in the evening to prevent powdery mildew. Water only in the morning or if absolutely necassary just gently water the dirt, avoiding the leaves , and NO SPASHING dirt spores up on plants. I wash dry chop and freeze Basil,Dill , Chives. Bunching Onions and Parseley so I have them all winter for cooking. Sage and Thyme thrive in zone 8b winters. I blanch and freeze the greens. Roast chop and freeze hot peppers. I can fruits, vegatables and dry herbs. Leek powxer is great in soup. I hot water bath can "Candied Jalapenos". I make Mint syrup for cocktails. Put a little 100% Moonshine in it and it lasts along time in the fridge. Well folks gotta get busy ! I hope someone is inspired !

It's true. Anyone can grow food in a big open area. When you have less to work with, you have to get creative. It forces you to plan and design, and when you get into that mindset, you make better decisions and work smarter. Ample land and good growing conditions don't make good gardeners. Challenges do.

Forgot to add - we tried your shade cloth trick to delay our fruit trees from breaking dormancy this year. IT WORKED PERFECTLY! This will be the first year in 7 seasons that we'll get peaches, plums and nectarines. We have schizophrenic shoulder seasons here with late frosts (just like your area - we are not far from you) and have never successfully saved our early developing fruits in previous years. The shade cloths kept the covered trees asleep until we were past all the hard frosts. We woke our frost vulnerable trees up at the appropriate time and now we have wonderful peaches, plums and nectarines developing all over our trees. Multiple neighbors, who've lived here all their lives, told us it was impossible to successfully grow these fruits here due to the late/erratic Spring frosts. Yet, now we have what look likes a bountiful harvest of each type coming our way thanks to you. We are absolutely thrilled and SO grateful to you. Thank you so much for your brilliant ideas, and for sharing your brilliant ideas and breakthroughs with the rest of us. You are an incredible blessing to the gardening community. God bless you!

Hey guys, very cool video! I'm a Philly area gal (Bucks County) now living in southern Maryland. Just a FYI, more property doesn't equal more productivity. We have 3 acres and the wildlife is way more destructive. Groundhog families, moles, voles, deer, raccoons and squirrels roam free. A more challenging gardening experience than a suburban plot. Don't let anyone tell you deer don't eat asparagus....
@pinelandsprepping53727 ай бұрын
I agree with this! We have 5 acres in south Jersey, but the deer are oppressive snd NJ deer eat everything!
@TheMillennialGardener7 ай бұрын
Land can be a challenge. It's all in the management. I personally consider fences mandatory for gardening for the reasons you mentioned. My plan would be to take the acreage and subdivide it into quarter acre plots that are individually fenced. Grow the edibles with fencing, then connect them one at a time with pathways planted with native support plants that are deer and bird resistant in between. That's my personal plan for the future, anyway.

I am just getting back into a little gardening,, after about fifteen years, with only growing peppers and tomatoes in the past. Well, I'm back and starting again with tomatoes and peppers in containers. It's been very enjoyable and I always appreciate the tips for new gardeners.

This was the crossover of crossovers! Thank you both, "Milli" and James - I was watching this and started thinking that 15 years ago, I don't think I would have ever thought I'd be as excited as I am right now watching this garden tour and getting to know more about one of my garden inspirations. Great job, guys!

This was a great idea to interview an avid gardener. I watch both of y'all and appreciate the knowledge you both share. Love how the pups join in. James is very innovative and has an infectious enthusiasm. Thanks for taking the time to make this happen! 😊👩🌾
