Guys, Today I'm reacting to Dzień Świra! I loved this movie it's so funny, but at the same time it's got a deeper meaning and I think it showcases that good Polish dark humor.
If you are a foreigner with any connections to Poland (relationship, living there, etc) you MUST watch this.
Here's the direct link to the movie on KZbin, it's free and it's got English Subtitles:

In Poland this movie is something like The Little Prince, because you must watch this minimum two times in your life, growing up process. Once as teenager, so you think it's comedy about some looser, and second when you are fully adult and can see that it is not much like comedy. Greetings!

Dzień Świra is a movie that every Pole should watch once every year. It combines all of post-communist era habits, inherit anger, superstitions, and wounds on Polish psyche that is, and somehow will, disrupt society's mental health for many years. It also shows what NOT TO DO with one's live, for it depicts, for example, running away from one's dreams from fear. Other example is how Poles are hostile one to another for trivial reasons. This films only pretends to be a comedy, but after understanding it, it becomes a tragedy. Deep, sad allegory of everyday live of what can happen if someone will not try to put oneself together, before it's too late.

The T75 is a model of a tank. The film is not so much interesting in terms of plot, but also has a linguistic curiosity. In English it will not be felt, and many Polish viewers will not notice it. The movie is written in thirteen-headers. Like a poem - there are 13 syllables in each verse. The director of this film is famous for this form.

Adaś Miauczyński (also Michał Miauczyński) - the protagonist of Marek Koterski's original series. Adaś Miauczyński appeared successively in the films Dom wariatów, Życie wewnętrzne , Porno, Nic śmiesznego, Ajlawju, Dzień świra, Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami, Baby są jakieś inne and 7 uczuć. Most often, Marek Kondrat played the role of Miauczyński.

The movie you watched is a "masakra" as you said. This is a grotesque only to be fully understood by massively frustrated people. When I watched it for the first time back when I was 25, I did not understand it at all. Now I am nearly 40, and I somehow can relate. My first salary as a teacher (back in 2006) was quite around what this guy was paid for his work. A mere tragedy to say - and I'm glad things have changed over years. But this also meant me requalifying completely, despite of my calling for that profession, I really enjoyed teaching children. In regards to the movie - this is how life of a cynical, poor person looks like. Still I would never relate it to me or my Polish surrounding, yet I know certain people who actually fit with that grotesque image. (But in the UK I actually met people who have it worse, so we are still not that bad here) T75 (I think the guy meant T72) - is a russian tank 05:00 Are Polish people avengful? As a Christian Pole, I would say no. In my dreams - yes, maybe like 100 times, but in reality - nope. One kind word and this changes things completely. But if one would really cross my way, well, I hope I will never find out.

"Dzień Świra" is basically my whole life. Yes, I am Pole and although I am not an intellectualist, I suffer from OCD just like the main character. It really looks like this :-D The only significant difference is that what happens to me every day is not funny at all (but it is not for Adam Miauczyński either). I wonder to what extent this film portrays Polish society. I am also interested in how Poles can see themselves in Miauczyński as in a mirror. By the way, I would like to recommend another film by the same director, "Nic Śmiesznego".

In technicality this movie isn't a comedy but a social satire, and these are actually two distinct genres, a satire satirizes a given theme in this case it satirized the contemporary Polish-Ukrainian national society and it's different phobias and paranoias. A satire can also use numerous stylisation in this case they use the over dramatization of the movie's theme and portraying little things the main character encounters as insumerable obstacles and part of the reason this works is because we know these are trivial or nonsensical issues based off paranoid fears like the scene with the Chinese socks. Most of these issues originate from the main character's intolerance and xenophobic culture he was raised in as a member of a proper patriotic God fearing Polish family, and it's this type of people and their environment that are the subject of the satire.
@BlazeMaster
@BlazeMaster 10 ай бұрын
To be honest it actually depends on the particular person, some people just take it in stride and generally most Polish people are a tad more optimistic than the main character of that movie, though you will occasionally find people like the main character making life difficult for everyone else as well.

I saw that movie twice. Once as teenager when I thought that is movie about Poland and about some truths, etc. And second time when I grow up a little, and I understood it's just a movie created by someone who just hates to be polish and is ashamed of it. It's showing Poland of '90s in, so called in Poland, deformed mirror. And as a movie created by someone who inside hates his country in some way, it's more sad than when you think it's about Poland. Cause it is about what one class of people thinks about your country and about people who are not in that class. And such people created polish culture and ways of our thoughts about our country. And that is real tragedy of that film.

I’d say this movie is about particular zeitgeist of Poland in the 90’s, and also making fun of Polish national traits at their worst. The main character is personification what Poles call “Polaczek” (little Pole - in a sarcastic sense). Polaczki (pl.) are vengeful, jealous, unfriendly, bitter, happy to see others' misfortune. They are petty people. Also, I should add most Polish people are rather generous and don’t want to be like that. Protagonist of this movie is intelligent, educated intellectual but also a tragic character because in the turn of unfortunate circumstances (like he didn’t have the opportunities young Poles have today to travel for work etc.), together with his lack of courage, he leads a very unsatisfying and frustrating life. He keeps dreaming but he’s unable to take action. His OCD gives him an illusion of control over his life. And it’s funny because it shows national vices. BTW, this struggle/mission to fight symbolic "Polaczek" and rise above pettiness in a society is a recurrent theme in Polish culture, e.g. see a music video of great Polish rapper Łona i Webber "Wyślij sobie pocztówkę" :)

Not many Poles knows what this movie is about. He got really big meanings in many aspects. The argue scenes between low class people and the main hurt by the live and political system typical polish intellectualist. None of this polish low class people understand him, he is a SWIR not because he is in real, but because he is different, because he do not fit to them and after all, he even use complicated language (stylistic figures, metphors etc.). My favorite scene was that in which Miauczynski force word battle about the mowing the lawn. One of the greatest scenes i've seen in cinema.

This whole movie is a satire over polish people and it's ways. Or what is used to be and still are in many ways. Not a comedy at all. But hilarious. Non polish person cannot get this movie entirely but i hope in some part at least:) Movie is showing big part of what we call "the transformation" (communism to capitalism). For example from 9:09 this is satire of first absurd adds that were shown in TV back then. It's obviously exaggerated but the whole movie is. Oh, and he is eating perfectly typical sandwiches watching this - a lot of attention to detail in this and everything else. Every scene can be deconstructed in similar way. The main character is not really a one character, rather the "sum of all our fers" personification thing.

If you want to see light but a really cult Polish movie, I recommend Pasikowski's "PSY" (Dogs). And if you want to see a masterpiece, it's "ZIEMIA OBIECANA" (THE PROMISED LAND) - a movie that was supposed to get an Oscar in every one category, but was excluded because "it showed Jews wrongly" (which is not true). Or "MANUSKRYPT ZNALEZIONY W SARAGOSSIE" (A Manuscript found in Saragossa) - a movie made in 1960', bought by Martin Scorsese so that no one else could ever see it again (I don't know if you will find a copy anywhere today). But I warn you. If you watch these movies, the images from them will stay with you for the rest of your life.

This is the most polish movie. Unhappy man unable to change his live blaims everyone around him for his bad life. Just grumbling, and grumbling... And never see anything bad in himself.

I don't think Asian looking acupuncturist is a Polish actress. Never seen her before. I believe her voice is deliberately distorted dubbing.

I think it is just Asian woman. Maybe living in Poland. You can hear her strong accent.
