Back-light uniformity and dirty screen drive me absolutely mad and are the only things that are total hard passes to me, and they are pretty much unavoidable unless you want an oled, which is useless to us due to having floor to ceiling windows in our lounge, so it's bright as hell in the day! We brought and returned a LG Nano99 mini led as it had such egregious back-light bleed that even my wife (who isn't phased by it) thought it looked appalling. We brought a TCL C845 which was dead on arrival. We also tried a Philips PUS8897 which has near perfect uniformity but had two dead pixels that were bright red. In the end we settled on a 65in X90L, and while it has some back-light uniformity issues, they are very very minor and the local dimming pretty much much makes it a moot issue. It's been a great choice for us and this video showed me the way! So thank you.

I just want to say, I had the Hisense u8k, 75 inch series for a few days and just exchanged it for the Sony Bravia Xr X90L 75 inches. The Sony is on another level which definitely beats the hisense u8k that i used to have in so many ways. Its truly unbelievable, the colors, the sharpness, and every detail in the picture blows me away, how accurate it is the whites and blacks and every color is true to its color it's so beautiful. Ohh Wow!! The Sony x90l is worth every penny. I think I won a panel lottery. I have not seen any blooming nor ghosting effects or a slightly dirty screen effect. Sdr, hdr, and Dolby vision are all unbelievable. The software on this is so smooth, it's incredible. Thank you so much for what you do and thank you for taking the time to show what TVs can do in comparison, without lying to people! You show it how it is! Always looking forward to see your videos

Everyone is so quick to get seduced and sucked in by the low prices on TV's from Vizio, TCL, Hisense and other low-cost brands. They don't realize that in the TV world, the old saying really IS true: "You get what you pay for!" Save your money and buy a SONY! You'll be SO glad you did. I'm sorry, but the reality here is that those second-tier, discount brands simply DO NOT perform as well as the Sony's do (as a matter of fact, they don't even come CLOSE) - and they typically last anywhere near as long either.

Interesting I don’t know if I agree but here is my opinion, about this I have a 75u8k The picture is absolutely beautiful. I don’t see no uniformity issues and a professional calibrator so it’s all calibrated. Yes, I got the whole idea of maybe seeing what else might be a better option but it’s not as easy as that I went to the Best Buy I went and looked so many times the X 90 L obviously has more blooming for sure it’s not as deep the blocks are not as deep the colour is not as vibrant or punchy that’s for damn sure… Out of the box if you’re not gonna calibrate it, then yes, the Sony is better it is more accurate colors. It is a very clear, smooth image, because Sony does have better image processing, but that is the only deciding factor of why I was even considering to swap it and it was either going to be for the 90 L like you guys or the 93L which is a mini LED and has deeper even better colours and black level little bit brighter than more in my opinion it is the better, but it is more expensive than the 90l Sony has XR clear where are the 93L does not, but I think it makes up for it because it has a mini LED system and just performs better.. when I go to the store to compare a side-by-side the 93 compared to the 90l but for the price I think it’s a bit price but I think it’s better tv. It’s a tough decision to make. I’m in the same boat. Keep u8k 75 crazy amount of local dimming zones very good black level, extreme brightness, extreme color, and I obviously calibrated that as well and looks great. I don’t see no uniform issues. Maybe I got lucky maybe I didn’t but it looks pretty good. The panel I have which I already checked out. Blooming is pretty much not really exist on this. I don’t really see it at all that’s all it does such a great job at that. But if I’m really becoming picky and nitpicky, and I’m trying to find fault and that’s what I do because I have OCD nothing is usually good enough lol The only thing I can think about swapping to a Sony because they have better image processing and clear and scaling, low content, etc. etc but how much more ? Is it worth me to swap? U8k for x90l at the same size of course 75 inch.. ? Or swap my u8k 75 for 65 x93l which is the way I was thinking yes I lose a lot of size that part sucks but if it’s more refined and it’s got a better image and upscales better, I think I would choose the better quality image. Tough decision to make. I just don’t like Sony that doesn’t put a lot of zones in their TVs and this is why you see blooming besides that yes their picture looks amazing but I feel like the u8k offer so much especially with gaming whether you use it or not where the Sony is not clearly on the same level they’re pretty good but they’re not 144 refresh rated doesn’t have all the bells and whistles it doesn’t

Since there are no perfect TVs and every TV model has strengths and weaknesses, choosing the TV you want to buy really comes down to deciding what features you absolutely must have to keep you happy long-term, while knowing which compromises won't bother you. There are several different companies making excellent TVs these days, and I do tend to appreciate the approach that Sony takes in achieving accurate picture quality. The best Sony models are often a bit pricey, but if they perform reliably for years (and if you can find them at a nice discount during sales like Black Friday) I think Sony TVs can be a good value.

Thing is... the problem for this TV is one that should've been solved years ago. The amount of local dimming zones should be at least doubled or tripled for a TV of this class and it's quite literally the only thing holding it back. I love my Z95F and it only has like 104 zones, but that was still an acceptable amount back when it came out. The colours still look amazingly lifelike. But I think that the 90 series still having less than 100 zones 5 years after the release of my TV is nothing less than completely unacceptable, especially with the increased sizes you can get the TV's with.

If Only Sony could have a TV that has the same zones as let's say the QN95C, but handle it better and manage to retain the X90L "detail". 2:39 the X90L is so much better looking right at this time stamp. The skin color, the highlights. It only fails because of the blooming. I really want to see Vincent review the X95L so we can get a really good idea of it's capabilities.

I just bought it from Best buy, it just arrived in Canada. Wow! it's so much more premium than the X90K. From picture, sound, design build quality improvement. It's the model with the biggest year over year jump in the lineup in my opinion, I speculate that not having a new 8K tv in the lineup freed up budget for other models. Feels closer to the X93L/X95K and L in terms of design that the X90K ever was.

Just bought a TCL tv with 480 miniLED zones and returned it. The image quality just straight up sucks when comparing to my old SONY X90J with only 24 zones, HDR or SDR. The TCL just wouldn't bright up or dimm down when it needs to. I can't say they are amazing for having so much blooming. That's not how creators intended to see the content, with that insane amount of blooming and grey blacks. To get blacker blacks with very little blooming, you need Samsung/Hisense/TCL, but it will dim dowm the picture, but this way you get black as black. But Sony fanboys don't care about black levels, I knew that already. All Sony LCDs suffer from the same blooming, on all models, including top end X90, X95 or even Z series. Sony fanboys like this type of picture, that's why they buy LCDs from Sony.

Vincent, the point of the backlight scan motion blur settings for 60Hz as you must know is to reduce persistence blur from sample-and-hold *without* having to engage motion interpolation, which can have its own problems. Yes, you get a tradeoff of a dimmer picture with more flicker/clearer motion for "older" 60fps and lower content, but the point is to get something closer to a CRT-like clarity even at the cost of a dimmer picture. This kind of smoothness is different from the smoothness of interpolation, which many people wish to avoid for older or non-optimized game and video content.

The bottom line is Sony is not necessary the best choice for some folks' preference and usage cases. This is my next 85 inch tv. I spend an embarrassing amount of time reaching my upcoming black Friday purchase and this is the winner. I currently have an X900E from 2017 and it has been a beast (aside from the 60hz gaming limitation) Fuck Oled ........

I’ve spent a similar amount of time and I’ll likely also go X90L. Maybe Bravia 7 if the price difference gets small enough but I’m not sure that will happen. The only concern I have is subtitle related blooming, but then again, my current TV some subtitle blooming too. I’m sure the X90L will blow my current TV out of the water. I don’t think I can bring myself to go OLED or flagship LED as there are too many compromises on both sides for me to spend big money.
@zarfilg

@@pieflies Well said. I think we both arrived at the same conclusion. To be fair, if the Bravia 9 wasn't almost 3x the price of the 90L (at the size I want )I wouldn't hesitate as I believe it to be the best TV out right now. If I didn't use my TV as a PC monitor for 80% of its usage I would give OLED a more serious consideration, but then there is the issue of losing out on Sony processing, which I can't see myself moving away from after having my X900e since 2017. The TCL and Hisense horror stories just scare me away from those brands in terms of QC - My experience with the X900E has been so utterly satisfying I can almost guarantee regret if I stray away from Sony at this point.

Hi. I loved your video review, and I've subscribed. However, I'm very curious as to which tv you'd recommend for watching tv and films with subtitles. I'm in an apartment with a semi bright room during the daytime, and the tv stays on all day on news or classic television programs, so there's often a news branding image towards the bottom, or there are black bars around the sides. That being said, I know blooming and less inky blacks can be a problem with non-oled tvs. I'm looking at three Sony models as choices - the A75L oled, or the X90L Full Array, or the X94L Mini Led. Which is the best choice overall for my needs?

You also reviewed the Panasonic DP-UB9000 premium 4K UHD Blu-ray player which has the unique ability to convert HDR to SDR while maintaining the wide color gamut of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. At some point, I was considering purchasing the Panasonic DP-UB820 for daytime viewing because of this feature. Being that the Sony X90L was released four and two thirds years later than the Panasonic DP-UB9000, would setting the Sony X90L's HDR Tone Mapping to Brightness Preferred achieve picture quality equal to or better than the Panasonic DP-UB9000's HDR to SDR conversion with wide color gamut?

@@jogo8261 I bought the X95J a year ago after informing myself here and finally watching all the TVs in the local store side by side for 2 hours. I was also shocked by the amount of blooming at home, but got accustomed to it and really dont wanna miss the realistic looking pictures anymore, which is the majority of watchtime. Coming from high fps gaming and not having a TV for over a decade, what also shocked me was the stuttering in moving scenes and realizing again that this must be the product of low fps movies (~24 fps as far as i know) and slow pixel reponse times. Since i do not yet trust OLEDs in regards of durability and my living room is really bright, while fixing both problems, this wasnt an option for me. Overall I am slightly dissapointed and it seems that there is simply no way to not have downsides when buying TVs today (yesterday). In the end, the high quality picture which i get more often than blooming and stuttering, leads me to wanna buy Sony again in the future. In my oppinion its a shame that Sony is seemingly the only one which still goes with some quality over quantity(time), despite the downsides like in this case, where others already had more dimming zones tackling the blooming problem a little faster.
